arsenal v tottenham

The scores are level at 2-2 after the first leg and it really could go either way. Last week we were 2-0 to Tottenham at one point and you had to wonder if we were going to make it to Cardiff. However ‘the boys done well’ and the got the scores level again. Without being bias I’d say we have the upper hand going into the 2nd leg; with the home fans, the two away goals (is there an away goal rule in this competition?) and the return of Mr. Silva, Spurs should be worried.

I do not see us losing tonight. If you think back to before the game at Anfield I was saying I wouldn’t mind us being knocked out if it meant Tottenham weren’t the first team to win at the Emirates but I’m confident a weaker Arsenal team can hold the Spurs attack and progress to the final. If I’m going to be completely honest with you, I don’t think we’ll win the cup; Chelsea put a full-strength team out in this competition and it’s going to take an amazing performance for a reserve Arsenal side to beat the reigning Premiership champions. This year Wenger has included a few more experienced players so you never know the strengh he might go for but it definatly won’t be 100%.

The first half at White Hart Lane was awful and Le Boss must’ve had a real go at the kids in the break. We we 2-0 down to our rivals who haven’t beaten us in something like 7 years. In the second half the performance was much better and if we’d had a bit more time we might’ve stole the win. Another performance tonight like in that second half and I think this one is in the bag.

The team will be fairly simiar to last week’s with a couple of changes. Fabregas started last week but I think Gilberto will come in for him in centre midfield. Hopefully Diaby isn’t stuck out on the wing again and I’d like to see him partner Silva in the middle, or it could be Flamini. The right wing will be occupied by Theo Walcott but I’m unsure about the opposite flank. Last week Diaby played there unsuccessfully in my opinion, but the round before we had Denilson there and I was very impressed with him. He is traditionally a more central player but I hope he’s our left midfield tonight. There’s another option of sticking Eboue on the right wing and Walcott on the left, I think it’d work well but I think it’s unlikely Wenger will start like that. It was announced yesterday that Baptista will be unfit so I think it’ll be Aliadiere and Adebayor partnered up front.

Adebayor

It’s certainly not a bad team and definatley one that can beat the scum and go all the way to the final in Cardiff. However we are still runing the risk of Spurs being the first team to win at our new ground and that is just not acceptable. I’m looking forward to a good game tonight, enjoy it from wherever you’re watching.

Thanks for reading.

Song joins Charlton

Many Gooners were waiting for the day that Alex Song would leave The Arsenal, and that day is today. He’s joined Charlton on loan until the end of the season, Arsene’s revenge for the little scrap at Upton Park. With Fabregas, Gilberto, Denilson, Flamini, Diaby plus other players who can play in the centre there was no way Song was going to get any games this season. We may have seen the last of him but at the moment he’s due to return in the summer. I wish him the best of luck at Charlton.

I’m afraid it’s not all good news today, Julio Baptista has been ruled out of tomorrow’s game with that groin injury picked up against Bolton. He took a late fitness test today as there was a chance he might play but Arsene’s decided not to risk him and will go for Aliadiere/Adebayor up front. Gilberto will captain the side after serving a three-match ban for his red card at Ewood Park.

Nicklas Bendtner has extended his loan at Birmingham until the end of the season. His current deal expired this month and with our current striker shortage there was an option to bring him back but Arsene has allowed him to complete the season with The Blues. Whether or not he’ll return to Arsenal in the summer is a different matter but for now he’s still officially our player. On the subject of Birmingham, Fabrice Muamba has said it’s up to him whether he decides to return to Arsenal or move elsewhere. I’m a fan of him and his tough style but with Diaby, Fabregas and Denilson I don’t think he’ll ever get that many games here. He’s a good player but to be fair we’ve got even better ones in that position so we don’t really need him.

And finally, we’ve apparently signed some French 15-year-old striker. Gilles Sunu has completed talks with Arsenal and will finalise a move to London in the summer. They’re getting younger and younger. If Wenger has confidence in this kid at such a young age then he must be good. Well we’ll see in about 5 years time.

That’s it for today. A preview of the scum’s 2nd trip to the Grove tomorrow, until then.

A lot of people were expecting a result after last week’s win over Manchester United but Bolton held us to a 1-1 draw forcing us into a dreaded tie up at the Reebok. The replay will be played on the 14th Feb and the winners will play Blackburn at home. It would be nice if we got some easy ties but we face more tough matches and an even tighter schedule. All these games must be having an impact on the team, hence all our injuries. Oh and there’s one more to add to that list, Baptista picked up a groin problem yesterday and Arsene in thinking about making a signing due to all our injuries. There is a chance Julio will play on Wednesday but otherwise it’s going to be Ade and Aliadiere up front.

We didn’t play particularly well yesterday. There was no cutting edge, no final quality and to be fair we didn’t really deserve to score. Bolton weren’t amazing either and I think in the end a draw was fair. The visitors will be pleased to take us on at home but I’m bloody not. We lost 3-1 there earlier in the season and that was with a less injured squad. I really do worry about Arsenal sometimes. We could be out of the FA Cup here, the Carling Cup is a long shot with a full-strength Chelsea waiting in Cardiff and if we don’t get some players fit soon we’re going to struggle against PSV.

We started with the team I expected but none of them had a particularly good game. Walcott looks a completely different player to the one last year. Fabregas wasn’t brilliant but did, now and again play some good passes. Henry had a back-heeled chance just before half time but nothing else comes to mind. I imagine it’s going to be a fairly similar side on Wednesday with all our injury problems but with Aliadiere for Henry and someone in Rosicky + some other changes. Tottenham will be giving it all they’ve got so they’ve got to sort it out.

As Gunnerblog pointed out, the fans weren’t helping the team much either. The atmosphere was poor and it really does annoy me. 60,000 fans but you could argue we made a better noise at ‘Highbury Library’. If you’re going to a football match, please get behind the team come on. If you’re not there for the atmosphere why are you there? Just watch it on TV. There is that one corner who try to keep the atmosphere up and I’m sitting there on Wednesday. Last time Spurs visited it was quite noisy so hopefully we can raise the atmosphere again for the youngsters.

Both goals came in the second half. Bolton’s came just 5 minutes after the break. It was a nice play by Bolton passing around the Arsenal defence with ease. In the end the ball came to Nolan in the edge of the six-yard box who had no trouble making it 1-0.At this point I wondered again if this would be our first loss at the new stadium as we hadn’t threatened the Bolton goal at all and I didn’t see us scoring.

In the 77th minute we did equalize. Fabregas took a free kick out on the right, swinging the ball into the box. A defender got his head to the ball first but it dropped at the back post for and unmarked Kolo Toure. His diving header bounced off the ground and over the ‘keeper. The Emirates made the first real bit of noise all night and with memories of the 2-1 over Man United still fresh in the memory there was belief that we could win this one (You can see the goals here).

toure/rosicky/ade

However unlike last week, we had no threat going forward and realistically you knew it’d be a draw. 4 minutes of extra time went up again and we did have a chance in the added time but it was saved comfortably. The final whistle eventually came and now we have to look forward to the Reebok, hurrah. See you later.

Who’s fed up with having an injured squad? 27 January, 2007

Wouldn’t you like just for once for us to have a fully fit squad? I mean if we had all our players fit all season I think we’d have a lot more points. Just when it looked like we were pulling the squad back together we hit another load of injuries. Last week it was just Ljungberg and Gallas injured and both were coming back into the team soon. Now, to add to that we’ve got Van Persie, Hleb, Djourou and Eboue. Our recent form has been down to the squad coming back to fitness but these injuries are a massive blow. Robin is going to be out for two and a half months, he’s our top scorer this season and has been in great form and to have him out for so long is not good. Gallas is still ‘two or three weeks away’, Arsene has put it down to trying to rush him back. Hopefully in a few weeks he’s playing again rather than being another two weeks away. Hleb’s going to be out for at least month after picking up a hamstring injury against Spurs. We’re running a bit low on wingers at the moment and young Theo Walcott might have to start a few games.

One player who certainly is fit is Cesc Fabregas. He doesn’t want to rest, he wants to play every game but Arsene’s said he will get a break soon. Cesc has been incredible this season and if he was one of the players we’d had out then we would’ve been in more trouble. He’s run every game he’s featured in and has been a key player for us this season. He’ll play tomorrow but I don’t expect him to start the 2nd leg of the Carling Cup Semi. Gilberto is back from suspension for that one and I think he’ll captain a youthful side at the Emirates.

Cesc

Aliadiere will not be leaving Arsenal this month. He’s been linked with a move away for a while but with an injury hit squad he may be called upon in the coming weeks. He’s not a bad player, I’m a bit of a fan of him but he’s just not Arsenal standard to be honest. I’d love to see him do well but he’s just not good enough. He suffered a back injury at White Hart Lane but it was only minor and he’s in tomorrow’s squad.

I’m not too sure what the team will be tomorrow. Almunia might be in goal, he started up at Anfield and I think he’s being used in the FA Cup. He’s a good ‘keeper but I’d much prefer Lehmann and I don’t really get why he’s playing. Then across the back I guess it’ll be Hoyte, Toure, Senderos and Clichy. In midfield I think we’ll go for Rosicky, Fabregas, Flamini and Walcott with Henry and Adebayor up front. There are options with Diaby, Denilson and Baptista but I see that as the most likely line-up tomorrow. Walcott wasn’t amazing on Wednesday but I don’t see any other option for the wing unless we play Denilson or Aliadiere.

Theo

I’m pretty confident ahead of tomorrow, I think it’ll be a convincing win. Bolton are our bogey team but we usually struggle up at the Reebok, if our fans get behind the team and they lads don’t allow themselves to be push around they shouldn’t have any trouble.

Have a good weekend.

Beast

You’ll never beat The Arsenal, not even the Reserves. We found ourselves in an unfamiliar position 2-0 down to the scum but our youngsters fought on and could’ve even won. We started with Kolo and Senderos at the back, Fabregas in the middle and weirdly Diaby out wide. Denilson accompanied Cesc in the middle but I don’t understand why. Abou is not a wide player and neither is Denilson technically but he did an excellent job there at Anfield. Diaby didn’t get the chance to impress on the left, hopefully he’ll see a few games more centrally in his comeback. The man of the night was Baptista. He scored 3 goals, 2 for us and 1 for them; he had a nightmare first half but looked more like himself in the second.

Tottenham started well and were looking quite dangerous. They opened the scoring early in the 12th minute. Defoe crossed in, Toure wasn’t able to get to it and it arrived nicely for Berbatov who just had to nod it in past Almunia. A really simple goal and one we really should’ve stopped. The goal scorer was on form, he started very well but luckily for us he picked up an injury and was subbed off for the pikey.

I was feeling a bit more confident now but just when I thought we’d come back Spurs doubled their lead. Graham Poll (who was once again shocking, I can’t believe I used to respect this guy) awarded an extremely generous free kick to Spurs in a decent position just wide of the box. Huddlestone sent in a low cross with pace and went in off Baptista past the stranded Almunia. Arsenal 0 Tottenham 2 and the yidos were loving it. Our first half was terrible, we didn’t create anything and the full strength Spurs side were dominating the game. We nearly got one back just before half time. Fabregas’ corner cleared the heads in the box and the ball fell to The Beast’s feet, he swung a left foot at it and it must have hit his other leg or something and he missed an absolute sitter.

So 2-0 at half time but the Gooners were still in full voice. I love our fans. Losing by two clear goals to our most fierce rivals and still singing our hearts out. The teams came out for the second half and there was bit of a delay becasue Poll couldn’t remember who’d kicked off the first half, what a fucking twat. We started off much better in the first half but we were still lacking that final quality, a change was needed.

Within 5 minutes, Hleb and Eboue came on for an injured Aliadiere and unimpreisve Diaby out on the left. Theo moved up front and Eboue took over at right midfield, that extra pace and quality really helped us and Emmanuel was getting down the wing well. Also Hleb’s dribbling ability was penatrating the Tottenham defence and causing problems. It made an immediate impact, Dawson cleared off the line from Senderos’ header and Baptista’s free kick hit the wall. Our first goal came in the 64th minute. Eboue on the right picked out Baptista on the edge of the box. He drove into the box and whilst falling, played a one-two with Walcott. Julio got back on his feet and slotted the ball past Robinson. We were still losing to the scum but the Arsenal section went mad, everyone was on top of the seats and I got on the fencing next to me. Have some of that you bagel-eating cunts.

We had confidence now but Spurs nearly got their third. Keane was played a ball over the top and was through on goal. He was given offside but the replay shows Senderos keeping him onside. It would’ve been a very different game if it had gone to 3-1 but luckily it didn’t. Not long after that we equalized, Fabregas spotted Hoyte’s run down the right and played a beautiful pass to set him free. Robinson, the fucking looney came out to stop the cross and Justin simply squared it to The Beast who finished in the empty net. The travelling fans went insane; I fell down about three rows celebrating but it was well worth it. “2-0! And you Fucked it up!” we sang and that’s exactly what happened. ‘England’s no.1′ did us a huge favour coming out but that goal wouldn’t have happened if it wasn’t for Cesc.

The yids shut up for the rest of the game showing they’re just as shit as the ground they play in. We should’ve won really, the home fans were desperate for the final whistle, we were on a roll. Tottenham nearly scored though but Almunia made a world class save. Manuel was forced to come out when Defoe got through, he tried a cheeky but Almunia pushed it wide. It finished 2-2 and probably a fair reflection on the game; first half we were poor but in the second half Spurs were equally as bad. It’s half time in the fixture and I’m extremely confident our boys are off to Cardiff to face Chelsea.

Three plays picked up injuries. Hleb’s going to be out for at least 4 weeks with a hamstring injury, he was only on the field for half an hour coming on for Diaby but Flamini had to come on for the last 5 minutes. Eboue’s and Aliadiere’s injuries aren’t as bad, both will be doubts for Sunday but are expected to be fit for the 2nd leg.

After the game there was a bit of violence in the streets between the rival fans. As we came out the stadium there were lines of police with dogs, I thought there might be a bit of trouble but nothing like this. Massive fights broke out and riot police tried to break things up. There was this one bloke in an Arsenal jacket being shoved around and getting stuff thrown at him. Me and this other bloke were trying to cover him up but the yids were ruthless and it became obvious I was a Gooner too so I just got out of there. I wasn’t up for getting my head kicked in. In the end a main group of Arsenal fans were diverted around the stadium and I was left with the Tottenham fans. I had my colours on underneath but I am never risking it by wearing Arsenal clothes there again.

Have a good day.

Van Persie’s injury much worse than expected 23 January, 2007

RVP

Robin Van Persie is going to be out of action for at least 6 weeks or more. Six weeks today is the 6th March, we play PSV at home on the 7th. It’s a long time out and we probably won’t see Robin back to his best this season. Luckily we’ve got talented back-up options but he’s our top scorer this season and we’re certainly going to miss him. Robin broke his fifth metatarsal celebration Henry’s winner on Sunday, usually the going mad part is left to the fans but the Dutch striker went a bit over the top too. This is what Arsene said about the injury:

“We have lost Robin van Persie for a while. How long? I don’t really know. It will be six weeks at least, if not more. It is a big blow because Robin has been on fire. He has had a great season until now. What is really terrible for me is that I did not want to use him at all. But we were 1-0 behind and I decided to put him on. However he got injured and you can never predict that.”

We’ve got three top strikers in Henry, Adebayor and Baptista and as long as all three stay fit we’ll be okay. Also Aliadiere will be keen to impress in the period and if he plays like he did at Anfield then I’m sure he’ll get a few games. He’s been linked with a move to Ligue 1′s Sochaux but with RVP’s injury I don’t think Wenger will be letting him leave this January. Also if things get really bad (touch wood) I believe we’ll be able to recall Bendtner from Birmingham if we get that desperate. This injury might be the difference between us stealing 2nd or scraping 4th so the others will have to perform well to keep us in the race.

Van Persie

Tomorrow we make the short trip to White Hart Lane for Tottenham vs. Arsenal Reserves in the 1st leg of the Carling Cup Semi Final. Last night Arsenal Youths lost 3-0 to Tottenham reserves but hopefully tomorrow will be a different story. The team is likely to be the same as the one that put 6 past Liverpool but Diaby could be set for his first start in a year. Here’s what Wenger said ahead of tomorrow’s game:

“I’ll stick with the same type of side; they deserve it. It is very difficult to say ‘listen you are good enough to play at Liverpool but you are not good enough to play at Tottenham’. They have earned the right. We are in a job where only quality decides whether you play or not. It is not how old you are or what you did before. Just on the day you have to turn up and show how good you are. Certainly Diaby is coming back and will play on Wednesday.”

It will be my first visit to the Shithole and I’m quite looking forward to our youngsters teaching the scum a lesson. If they could pull off something similar to the result in the last round I will be a very happy man but I’ll settle for a draw to be honest. If we have a bad game this leg, Wenger still has the option of strengthening the team with a few more established team players for the Emirates tie.

The team is quite difficult to predict as I am unsure of the fitness of Ljungberg, Gallas and Djourou. The only players I am sure will start are Almunia, Hoyte, Traore, Diaby, Walcott, Denilson, Aliadiere and Baptista. I don’t know who’ll be at centre back. Djourou or Gallas will if they’re fit but otherwise I suppose it’ll be Connolly and maybe Ryan Garry? In midfield along with those other three I mentioned it’ll probably be Randall or Lansbury. Not a bad team and certainly one I am confident can beat Spurs. I have a lot of faith in our youngsters and I believe they can do well in the competition. In the other Semi it’s between Chelsea and Wycombe. They’re playing the 2nd leg at Stamford Bridge as I type; it’s currently 1-0 to Chelsea and 2-1 on aggregate to them.

The only other news is Henry saying we can still win the league and a mad story that Anelka fancies a move back to Arsenal. A bit silly you might think but with only 3 top strikers fit at the moment there may be something there but I’d prefer him to stay well away.

I’m off to cheer on Wycombe, see ya.

What a fucking amazing game. Without doubt the best match so far at our new stadium. All the talk before the game was about who’ll play up front. Adebayor started with Henry but it took all four strikers to be on the pitch before we could score. Van Persie came off the bench to score the equalizer and Henry headed in Eboue’s cross to win it. Baptista wasn’t very influential but he was playing in a midfield position and didn’t get a chance to do anything.

The game started off as you’d expect. It was a bit shaky and nervous and nobody was going to force some early errors. I have to say I think we started off with having the most chances. United never really threatened a goal in normal time of the first half. Our centre backs were brilliant and had control of everything. Also before the game I was a bit worried about Ronaldo’s form but our full backs had him in their pocket the whole game. He started off on Clichy’s side but Gael was embarrassing the Portuguese winger; so he decided to switch wings and have a go at Eboue but it was the same story. I was also concerned about Paul Scholes but you didn’t even notice he was on the pitch. I just had to double-check the teams for yesterday to be sure he was. Fabregas was controlling the centre of the park with ease. And Henrik who? Our centre backs dealt with him easily and the veteran striker wasn’t able to create anything. I said this last week and how right I was:

“I can see it now, Senderos mastering Larsson, Clichy embarrassing Ronaldo and Fabregas dominating that ginger twat. We just have to hope that happens.”

Ronaldo / Rosicky

We had a few decent chances in the first half but nothing clinical or making Van der Sar work. The best chances fell to the visitors in extra time. The ball came to Rooney on the edge of the box who fired a ball just going underneath the crossbar. Lehmann made a brilliant save to tip the ball over the bar for a corner. Giggs took it and it was dropping nicely for Henrik Larsson who headed downwards, towards the bottom corner. Lehmann dived low to his left and just managed to stop the Manc’s going in one up at half time. Jens showing why we should be looking to extend his contract and he can still do a job for Arsenal.

Lehmann / Clichy

The second half started with a bang, Fabregas had an early long-range effort but it went straight into the arms of the ‘keeper. We were looking the dominant side again but we conceded on the counter attack. Ronaldo sprinted into our half and played a good ball to Evra who’d made a brilliant run. He played in a dangerous cross, Toure got a touch on it but it wasn’t enough and the ball fell nicely to Rooney had a free header from close range to make it 1-0 to United.

rooney / ferdinand

Arsenal picked up though after this, the crowd were getting behind the team and the boys were creating lots of chances. We were having some good shots on goal but nothing good enough to equalize. Cesc and Rosicky both coming close. Van Persie was brought on for Hleb in the 67th minute to help with the Arsenal attack. We had a sense of belief and the game was just non-stop attacking and non-stop time wasting from United.

In the 73rd minute there was a bit of a goalmouth scramble; Adebayor nearly managing to slide the ball in but the United players were just throwing their bodies at the ball and as a result Van der Sar went down injured for a few minutes. It was good for the visitors as they could slow down Arsenal’s momentum and take a break.

I was starting to wonder if this was going to be the day we lost our unbeaten run at the new stadium but in the 83rd minute Robin Van Persie came up with the equalizer to send 55,000 into hysterics. Rosicky got down the right and sent a low cross in. Henry tried a little back flick but his touch found Van Persie right by the far post. The ball was travelling at speed and it was a very tight angle but somehow our top scorer managed to steer the ball past Van der Sar into the roof of the net. I went mad jumping all over some old bloke next to me but I think he could understand my jubilation. It was a record attendance yesterday of 60,128 and they really made some noise at that goal.

1-1

Arsenal were definitely on top and we were pushing for the winner with 7 minutes remaining. Manchester United were tired and were hanging on for the draw. I said I’d take a draw before the game but now we were in a commanding position and all three points were there for the taking. I was praying for the equalizer but now I was thinking another goal would just be something special.

Thanks to United’s time wasting, cheating tactics we were awarded 4 minutes of extra time to find a winner, it took all four of them to do it and with the last touch of the game Thierry Henry headed in to give us the win. Eboue played in a great cross from the right and our skipper was perfectly positioned to head past the Dutch goalie. You thought we made some noise for the first goal but the second was something else. It was the most I’ve celebrated a goal since Campbell’s in Paris.

2-1

The stadium was pretty full at 94 minutes but as usual a fair number had left. I hope that teaches you now. The last game early-leavers missed two goals and a lot of them thought I’d be a good idea to stay this time however you could see hundred walking up the aisles at 1-1. I hope they heard us screaming as they were walking to the station.

The stadium was pretty full well after the final whistle; everybody was still celebrating, singing and waving the United fans off ahead of their long trip home. By far the best day at The Emirates, it would’ve taken a lot to beat the 3-0 win over spurs but this was miles better.

There was a negative point from the game though, Robin Van Persie has broken his fifth metatarsal celebrating the winner. He’s going to be out for a number of weeks and this is bad news for Arsenal to lost our top goalscorer. At least we’ve got good quality back-up in that position and it might just give Baptista the time to shine. Not quite sure how long Robin’s going to be out for but I’ll keep you updated.

henry / van persie

It’s Arsenal vs. Spurs reserves tonight at Underhill. Get down to Barnet if you can tonight for the 7 o’clock kick off. Not sure what sort of team will play with the usual reserves making the trip to While Hart Lane on Wednesday but should be an interesting encounter. Entrance is fee by the way so why not? Have a good day, make sure you let some United fans know the score yeah?

Man Utd Preview – Win takes us 6pts from Chelsea 20 January, 2007

Asburton Grove

The final whistle has gone at Anfield and Chelsea lost 2-0. The result means we can’t get any higher than 4th this weekend but a win tomorrow would put us one point behind Liverpool and 6 behind Chelsea with both teams still left to play this season. If we did take all three points tomorrow we’d still be 12 points away from Man U, even that will be hard to catch up with so Wenger is right that if we lose we will be well and truly out of the title race. If we lose tomorrow United will have 60 points and will be well clear of the chasing pack. It’s been a two horse race for the title all season but Chelsea have been poor recently and now it’s 3 teams going for 2nd while United are pretty comfortable in 1st.

I’ve just started to get exited for tomorrow’s game and I’m quietly confident we’ll win. I know it’s going to be another fantastic day at The Emirates and the atmosphere should be electric. Every player will be up for this one, this match has so much importance on the top 4 a slip up is not an option.

Henry is often left out of the Manchester United game but I’m expecting his to start this one. He’s been on good form since his comeback and I think Arsene will chose to play him. There’s doubts over Van Persie and there’s talk that The Beast could play in what’s bound to be physical match. I’d be surprised if we went 4-5-1 for this one so I’m expecting one of these partnerships up front: Henry/RVP, RVP/Ade, RVP/Baptista, Henry/Ade or Henry/Baptista. Not exactly narrowing it down but I can see any one of those partnerships doing well. The only one that isn’t there is Baptista/Ade; I don’t think they would work well together. I just don’t see it. The rest of the team pretty much picks itself, the only thing is who’ll partner Fabregas come in for the suspended Gilberto. It’s very likely to be Flamini, arsenal.com even said so but there’s still other options. Rosicky can play centrally and Wenger has played The Beast there.

The Flam

United have been playing brilliantly this season and you have to give credit to them. Scholes and Ronaldo have been especially good and Henry has said Scholes should get player of the year. The only player who hasn’t performed particularly well is Rooney. He’s played alright but hasn’t been anything special. Rooney’s only scored 8 goals this season and you would’ve expected him to have got many more than that. The other strikers have been making up for him though, Saha’s got 12 and Solskjaer’s got 9. I’m not sure who’ll start up front for them tomorrow, I’m guessing it’ll be Rooney and Larsson but I really haven’t got a clue.

I just can’t wait for the game to start now; I’ve had enough of all the build up I just want to get down to the match. Hopefully we can keep our unbeaten run at our new stadium and I think that’s the main priority tomorrow. I’d take a draw but I don’t think the visitors will, they’ll be trying to extend the gap at the top with Chelsea losing today. I’ll have a match report up on Monday.

Arsenal v Man Utd

Our next game is the first leg of the Carling Cup Semi at White Hart Lane and I’ve managed to sort out a ticket. I’ve never been to the shithole before so should be a great experience. Hopefully our lads can put in a performance similar to the one in the last round ;) More build up to that one next week.

Today I added an About page. Nothing special, I just made it as somewhere I could give you my email address as a few people have asked for it. I’m having a bit of trouble with the setup of the account but it’ll be working soon. It should be lasagnechef@the-cannon.com when I sort it out but don’t email me yet, I’ll let you know when it’s up and running.

Enjoy the game.

Lauren’s gone, but now we must move on 19 January, 2007

Lauren, gone

Last night it was announced that right back Lauren has moved to Portsmouth. It’s sad new for every Arsenal fan but we must get over it now with the United game on the horizon. “Ralph’ has been a fantastic servant to the club and I don’t think there is one Arsenal fan with something bad to say about him. He was one of those good old Arsenal hard nuts that are now gradually fading out of our team. Eboue steps up to first choice right back, it won’t make a difference to him. He’s been in the same position all season and most of last season including a run that took him to Paris. I’m not 100% confident in Eboue, I’d much prefer having Lauren there but Emmanuel is only going to get better. He’s got some big boots to fill and I think he’s up to the task. He’s going to have Hoyte and Gilbert hot on his heels for that place so he’s wrong if he thinks he’s a guaranteed name on the team sheet.

Lauren takes the no.10 shirt at Portsmouth and has signed a 2 and a half-year deal there. He joins a number of Ex-Arsenal players including Adams, Kanu, Campbell and Andy Cole (cough). I’m sure he’ll do well there but I’m keen to see him playing. To move from being Arsenal’s first choice right back to Portsmouth he must be a different player to the one we saw before his injury.

When we played Liverpool in the Carling Cup Wenger said Lauren wasn’t going to play because he had a small toe injury. I hate it that managers do this and I’d much prefer him to tell the truth and say he’s thinking about moving. Chelsea the other day said on their website they’re going to put a bid in for some player, can’t remember who and then told the fans the offer was rejected. It rarely happens like that where the fans are actually told what is going on at their football club. Anyway Lauren is gone, bye bye, thanks for the memories, see you on the last day of the season.

Lauren

Now we move on to Sunday. RVP picked up a knock in training this week and was a doubt for the big game but now Wenger is saying Van Persie has an 80% chance to play. He was expected to start and with Baptista and Adebayor in reserve I don’t think Wenger will play him if there is any sort of risk. At the moment I’m still thinking he’ll play but hopefully we’ll get some more news on that tomorrow. Also Johann Djourou is out which leaves us a bit thin on centre-backs but we’ll be alright. And I’ve got some terrible, terrible news to tell you. Teenage sensation Alexander Song is away on international duty for Cameroon U20. I can’t imagine the sort of stress Mr. Wenger must be going through now but I’m sure he’ll find a replacement for the clash with Manchester United.

Eboue is back so he will feature but Gallas and Freddie are still out and Gilberto is suspended remember. So I’m expecting Fab & The Flam in the middle of the park with Rosicky & Hleb out wide. Eboue/Toure/Senderos/Clichy in defence then Henry partnered by RVP if fit, otherwise I reckon it’ll be Ade. By no means a weak team and certainly one good enough to beat Man U if they’re up 4 it. Scholes, Ronaldo and Larsson are all on good form so we’ll have to make sure we don’t give them the room to play. I can see it now, Senderos mastering Larsson, Clichy embarrassing Ronaldo and Fabregas dominating that ginger twat. We just have to hope that happens.

    Fabregas vs. Scholes

The weekend’s fixtures will have a big impact on the title race and according to Wenger we are out of it if we lose. Most people dismissed Arsenal’s chances a while ago but if results go our way this weekend we’re gradually climbing our way closer to the top. It’s a very slim chance we could win the title in 2007 but still a chance.

Sorry about the lack of updates this week, I had an interview today and had a lot to prepare but I’m back now and I’ll have a match preview up tomorrow. Now I’m going to the squad pages to remove Ralph Lauren…Happy Weekend.

Arsenal vs. Man United

Arsenal vs. Manchester United is one of the most anticipated matches of the year and it’s been pretty quiet this week so far but people are stating to talk about the game now. The Wenger-Ferguson mind games have dies down in recent games but the passion is still there. Also Liverpool face Chelsea this weekend so this will be an important couple of days for the top four. Chelsea could close the gap to 3 points, we could go 2 points clear in 3rd, Liverpool could go 5 points away from second and we could be 6 points away from Chelsea. It’s hard to decide who I’ll be rooting for between the Scoucers and Russians. We will be looking to jump Liverpool but we’re quite realistically within distance of Chelsea. Man United are going to take some catching up but if we can take all the points on Sunday it’ll make things interesting.

A few months ago the top four all played in the same weekend, Chelsea beat Liverpool in the early kick off and we won 1-0 at Old Trafford. Two results like that would do us good again but I’m hoping that we win (obviously) and in the other game the points are shared. I think we can still come 2nd this year and I think we should have our sights on that rather than third. If there was some sort of disaster for Man USA then we could even be in with a shot of the title who knows.

I’d love for Lauren to be playing against Man United on Sunday, we could do with a bit of this in what’s bound to be a physical match. However Ralphy looks like he’s played his last game for Arsenal and his long-term replacement Eboue is keen to play on Sunday. He got an ankle injury a while ago against Portsmouth and made his return for the 3rd Round of the FA Cup but he aggravated it and has missed a couple of games. Now he has his eyes on returning against Manchester United:

“The problem has been my ankle. I have been injured since the game against Portsmouth and when I trained I was still feeling it a little bit. But I am hoping to be back for the game against Manchester United. I really, really want to play in that game.”

I’d prefer to have Eboue than Hoyte on Sunday but I’m really not that bothered, Justin’s done well recently and I think he’d also be up to the task.

Eboue

The full back on the other side, Gael Clichy has been talking about life after Ashley Cole and how he still doesn’t take his place in the team for granted. With no Cole, Gael’s now first choice left back with only really Traore challenging him for his place. He’s going to have to play well this weekend as he’ll be up against an in-form Christiano Ronaldo. Here’s what he had to say:

“I am really enjoying myself, definitely. Playing football has always been a passion for me, since I was six years old I wanted to be a footballer. Last season was difficult for me with all the injuries. My first two seasons here were good but Ashley was there so I was on the bench a lot. But now I am just enjoying the time I get to play on the pitch. I’m really enjoying playing for Arsenal. I have to keep working hard in training because I know how quickly things can change in football. Maybe tomorrow there will be some new left back and Arsenal may want to sign him. So I am working hard to make sure that the boss doesn’t feel he needs to go out and buy someone else in the summer.”

I’m confident that Clichy will go on to become one of the best left back around and better than Ashley Cole. You have to admit he’s got big boots to fill but I think he can do it. I’m also I big fan of Armand Traore‘s and I think he’s another kid who can bee a big player for us one day. In a couple of years we’ll have to excellent left backs and I think Wenger knows this so wont be buying a left back anytime soon. Don’t forget we’ve also got William Gallas as cover there and I don’t need to go into how good he is.

Clichy

Alex Hleb has been talking about Shevchenko saying he was wrong to move to the Premiership this late in his career. ‘Shevva’ moved from Milan to Chelsea for ₤30m in the summer and has been an absolute flop. I admired Andrei when he played for AC but was quite concerned when we’d have to face him in the Premiership, so I am over the moon how he’s been total bollocks for Chelsea and wasted thirty-mill of Roman’s cash.

Rio Ferdinand say’s he’s concerned about Adebayor the most ahead of Sunday’s game. The mind games have begun. Ferdinand is trying to be clever here when obviously any defender in the world is going to be concentrating on Thierry Henry the most.

And Finally, ticket details for the Spurs game at The Shithole for the first leg of the Carling Cup were released yesterday. You’re going to need 25+ away credits to have a chance of going for this first allocation of 3,000 tickets. Looks like I’m not going then. However there might be another load of tickets released where you won’t need as many credits. I’ve got 2, not looking good for me ay.

Have a good day.

There are no new stories today as we’ve got an unusual midweek break from football. The players and coaching staff will appreciate this break but it mean there is no news for me. There’s a little bit and it’s all old and crap, but I’ll give it to you anyway.

Steve Bruce has said he’s like to sign Muamba permanently. Fabrice is currently on loan but Birmingham are keen to keep him for longer than the end of the season. He’s thought of as the new Paddy Vieira and he’s a bit of a hard nut, I’d want him to stay at Arsenal but with the other young midfielders coming through you’d wonder if we’d actually need him. We’ve got Diaby, Fabregas, Merida, Denilson and more who all look like they’re going to be top players one day. I’d like Muamba to stay but I’ll understand if he’s allowed to leave.

Jose Reyes is still upset about only getting 5 minutes in last years Champions League Final. Well the reason you didn’t is because you weren’t good enough or you’d just roll around on the floor. Reading this story I started thinking about Paris and was looking at photos and stuff, it made me pretty sad and then I took it to the next level and started to watch the highlights on youtube. It was torture and all I could manage was up to Sol’s goal, then I switched it off. It made me proud to be a Gooner but very depressed. Hopefully we’ll be all off to Athens to right those wrongs.

Reyes and Fab

On Saturday Tugay stamped on Cesc’s ankle and he was forced off with his foot wrapped in ice. There were fears that he’d miss the game against Man United along with Gilberto but it looks like he’ll make it. It was a bad challenge and we might’ve been in a bit of trouble if we had both of our centre midfielders out of Sunday’s big game. Here’s what he had to say:

“It’s a bit painful, but I’ll be alright as I’ll have a week to rest. I’m sure I’ll be able to play. It won’t be a problem if the boss wants to play me.”

It looks like it’ll be Flamini and Cesc in the middle against Man U and they’ll need to be on top form to get a result like we did up at their place. It’s bad news that Gilberto is suspended for this one but we’ve got plenty of players who can play his position. Diaby would be my choice but I don’t think he’s fully fit yet and I’m pretty confident that Wenger will go with Flamini. There’s also the option on putting RVP out wide and moving Rosicky more central, it’s going to be interesting to see what Arsene does go for but still I’d feel more confident with the Brazilian. It was a silly red card but Arsene says he’s not going to appeal. He’s right, although it probably wasn’t worth a sending off he did stick out his leg at Savage and that decides it. If the ref had any common sense he’d of given a yellow but if you compare the challenge to the rulebook then it’s a straight red.

Gilberto's Red

Last week Wenger announced that our right-back Lauren will be allowed to leave the club this transfer window. There’s no more news on that but I expect he’s in talks with clubs at the moment. I’ll bring you news on that when I get it. Happy Monday.

Two Nil to The Arsenal

I was very pleased with the 2-0 win at Ewood Park and the performance yesterday. We won comfortably with 10 men after a stupid sending off with 2 great goals. We started as expected with Van Persie partnering Henry up front and Baptista was on the bench with Adebayor. The game started normally but it became obvious that Blackburn were out to use the usual tactics and try and hurt us. They nearly scored in the 10th minute, Matt Derbyshire had an open header from a corner at the back post but he just steered it wide. It looked like he was going to score and if he’d got better contact on it we’d have been one down early on.

A few minutes later Robbie “I am an absolute cunt” Savage ploughed into Gilberto Silva with intent to hurt him. The Brazilian was knocked off the ball and on the ground and turned round to Savage flicking his boot out at his shin. It was a little tap but Savage hurled himself to the ground like a sniper had taken him out from the upper tier. Gilberto got sent off and Savage got a yellow for the initial challenge. It was a harsh sending off but I suppose he did intend to kick the player, which is a red card offence, we could appeal but it wouldn’t be worth it. He’ll get a 3 match ban now including games against Manchester United and Spurs. I wonder if Diaby is ready enough to step up into his place but I expect Wenger to play it safe with Flamini. Hopefully Baptista doesn’t play there, I think Arsene has realised now that he is actually a striker. So we now had to play the remaining 75 minutes or so with just 10 men.
Silva gets sent off
In fact losing our influential midfielder made us better, we pulled together and got stuck in. I suppose we were angry with the decision and decided to take the punishment out on Blackburn. The referee was a knob about it though, he obviously made these decisions in the game to make a name for himself, get some TV coverage and read his name in the Sunday’s. So I’m not going to give him what he wanted by talking about him. Oh. If the ref was someone like Poll or something he’d of given them both yellows and been respected for seeing the challenge in it’s true light and letting the game flow on with 11 men on each side, he’s usually quite good at that sort of thing.

With 35 minutes gone Blackburn slipped up and Van Persie was through on goal, Lucas Neill brought down the Dutch striker and as the last man you’d think he’d have to be sent off? But no, the yellow card was shown and instead on having Van Persie one-on-one with Friedel or the Blackburn captain sent off we had a free kick about 40 yards out in not a very dangerous position. The referee was starting to show how shit he was but luckily we’ve got Thierry Henry and he turned this nothing free kick into a goal. Toure was making he was up into the box and Henry spotted him by the back post, he whipped an inch perfect ball in for Kolo to head. It hit the inside of the post and went in behind Friedel. I thought that Kolo had hit the woodwork and took a few seconds before I realised we’d scored, I went mad when we did though; I was worried that we were going to lose this game but now we were 1-0 up with 10 men and in a commanding position.
1-0
We went in at half time one goal up and you wouldn’t have been able to tell that we were a man down if you’d tuned in late. We were playing quite well but it was the same old story every game: we keep giving the ball away. I don’t know when Wenger is going to sort this out, I’d love to see a stat showing our misplaced passes and losing possession. Every game we do it and sometimes we are lucky the other team don’t score from it. It wasn’t quite so bad as other games but we were still giving it away far too much.

In the 67th minutes Fabregas played a great pass to Van Persie who found Henry outside the box on the left. He took a shot and tried to bend it into the opposite corner. There wasn’t enough curl on the ball and it just went passed the post but Thierry nearly carried on the record of scoring in all of his games after he’s returned from injury.
TH14 & EA25
One minute later Lucas Neill made a good driving run into our box and whipped in a ball across the face of the goal looking for someone to touch it in. It fell to Derbyshire at the back post who again couldn’t quite divert the ball into the net and it ended up going just wide. He stuck out leg rather than going for the diving header and it looks like he made the wrong choice and missed out on the equalizer.

It wasn’t much longer after that we doubled our lead though, a breathtaking goal from none other than Thierry Henry in the 71st minute. It was classic counter attack Arsenal, we were defending a corner and won the ball out wide, Rosicky set Henry free and he could charge down the other end of the field. By the time he’s made it down the wing near the opposite box he had about 3 players around him but with Fabregas they managed to weave their way around them. Thierry played a one-two with Cesc and with the return pass Henry shot first time on the left side of the box with a beautiful bending shot which went exactly in the opposite top corner of the net. Friedel managed to get a hand to it but it was an unstoppable shot. Another Thierry Henry goal to remember and now he’s scored in every game since his return from injury.
2-0
4 minutes later Thierry nearly got his second. Henry was alone in the box and Rosicky spotted him playing a great ball in over to him. Henry took it down well on his chest but couldn’t quite shoot quick enough and he was tackled well to save us going 3-0 up. That was it though, 2-0 the final score and a performance we can be very pleased with. You can see the highlights here and it’s definitely worth watching even if it is just to see Henry’s goal.

The low point was Gilberto getting sent off and now missing the league leader’s trip to Ashburton Grove. We can cope without him though and we’re going to have to. However yesterday was all about Thierry Henry, setting up one and scoring one. I leave you with this beautiful image…he’s back.
The one and only Thierry Henry

Freddie is staying, but Lauren is being allowed to leave 12 January, 2007

Ljungberg

Arsene Wenger has told us that Freddie Ljungberg is going nowhere and is an important part of the squad. It was thought he might be off this month but the manager has assured he’s staying at Arsenal. It’s good news for the fans but there was some bad news posted on arsenal.com today. They’ve announced that Lauren will be allowed to go. It’s extremely sad news and now once the club have said this I don’t see him staying. If he doesn’t move this month then it’ll be in the summer but I think we’ve seen the last of Lauren in the Arsenal shirt. This is the saddest piece of news we’ve had for a long time and I’m gutted that he’s off. Arsene says that we have too many players now in that position and that’s why he’s allowed to go. It’s stupid because Eboue and Hoyte are nowhere near as good as Lauren. There’s nothing I can really say or do though, I’d rather just leave it until the day of his departure comes.

Lauren...

I’ll move on as swiftly as possible from that and Jeremie Aliadiere has confirmed that’s he’s hanging about at Arsenal for a bit longer. A lot of people thought he might be off this month but Jem has said he’s always wanted to succeed here. He’s had a couple of games this season due to injuries but if he improves on Tuesday night he could really give another selection headache for Wenger. I think he’s a great back up striker and can do a job when asked.

Tomorrow afternoon we play Blackburn many people are backing us to lose this one: It’s Blackburn, away, 5.15, PremPlus…all the signs say we’ll go home with no points. However coming off the back of two wins at Anfield we should be high on confidence. I’m not going as it’s my brother’s birthday but I shall find somewhere to follow the game on Sky PPV. It’s hard for me to guess what the team might be because we’ve got a couple of players who played well on Tuesday who don’t usually get into the first team. Anyway I think it’ll be Lehmann, Hoyte, Toure, Senderos and Clichy. Almunia, Djourou and Traore played well at Anfield but I feel they’ll be replaced for this Premiership tie. Eboue is injured so Justin Hoyte will come in instead of Lauren because, well, you know. Then in midfield I’m guessing it’ll be Hleb, Fabregas, Gilberto and Rosicky. Then up front it gets a bit trickier. Henry’s been back for a few games so I can pretty much guarantee he’ll start, but it’s a question of who’ll partner him? Baptista certainly deserves it after a strong performance on Tuesday with 4 goals and if he’s ever going to start upfront this’ll be his moment. Also Adebayor is back from injury and Van Persie is raring to go. I thing Wenger will go with Henry and Van Persie as the two strikers but personally I think The Beast should partner Henry.

Beast

We’ve got a good squad to select from; apart from Ljungberg, Eboue and Lauren everyone’s ready for selection. It’s quite likely Arsene will pick the team I have above but it would be nice to see Baptista. Whoever he picks though they will be a top class player and good enough to do the job. Last time we played Blackburn we thrashed ‘em 6-2, it wasn’t really a fair reflection on the game to be honest but we still managed 6 goals. I don’t think things will be such a walkover up at Ewood Park but I’m confident we’ll beat them again. Before Liverpool I was thinking to myself if I go into the Blackburn game expecting to lose anything we get is a bonus, however after our performances on Merseyside I’ve changed my mind.

Blackburn have been one of our bogey teams recently but I’m hoping tomorrow we put all that behind us. It’ll be an interesting game to watch and hopefully a happy one too. I’ll get a match report up here asap. Happy Weekend Gooners.

Ljungberg and Lauren to go? Aliadiere and Arsene to stay? 11 January, 2007

Lauren

Arsenal fans have been looking forward to Lauren’s return from injury this season with great anticipation but now it looks more than likely he will be moving clubs. It’s sad news for us and if he was anywhere near as good as he was before the injury then he’d definitely get the first team football, but maybe his decision to leave is more than that. I don’t think it’s about money; Ralphy just doesn’t seem that sort of person. It seems to be to do with the Carling Cup game against Liverpool, apparently Lauren was actually fit and expecting to play but Arsene came out saying ‘he has a small toe injury’ which was a lie. This is what I’ve heard anyway. I was thinking we’d see Lauren as the regular right back soon, possibly on Saturday but now Lauren is having talks at Upton Park.

Wenger was full of praise for Lauren last month but it seems now things have changed. I will be a sad Gooner if Lauren decides to leave but at least we have got some cover. Eboue is good but he’s had some bad games this season and has turned into a bit of a diver and a cheater. I think Wenger’s getting a little fed up with him too and has brought him off a few times. The other option is Hoyte. Better than Eboue? Personally I think no, but he is getting there. Then we’ve got Gilbert currently on loan to Cardiff and doing well. Most fans probably remember his performance at Highbury, setting up a goal brilliantly and then had Thierry Henry congratulating him and presenting him to the crowd. I’ve seen him a few times at Underhill for the reserves and he does look a talented player. I’d say he’s of the same quality as Hoyte but we’ve got 3 upcoming youngsters to replace Lauren if he decides to go. Ralph’s contract expires in the summer and talk is that Gary Lewin patched him up enough to sell on this January to make a bit of cash out of him. Hopefully he decides not to go but at the moment it looks likely.

Ralphy

Freddie Ljungberg is another player who looks set to leave Arsenal this transfer period. He’s been linked with West Ham, Portsmouth and Inter Milan but Arsene still values him as a player saying ‘he has a lot to offer us’. With Hleb, Rosicky and Walcott cementing their places in the team it doesn’t really look like there’s a place in the starting eleven for Freddie. He’s been incredible for us over the years and a fantastic representative for Arsenal but everyone knew one day it’d come to an end and it looks like 2007 could be the end of the Arsenal-Freddie relationship. He was unlucky with injuries at the start of the season and it was then that he lost his place in the team.

There’s been stories in the tabloids saying Arsenal are pushing him out the team after all his good service but I don’t believe we would do that. To be fair we don’t really need him anymore and his talents could help another team elsewhere. He’s definitely not going to see as much football as he did in previous years so maybe it is right for Freddie to move on. Again, it would be sad to see him go but I feel it has to be done. It’ll be a hard moment for Arsenal fans and we will always love Freddie Ljungberg no matter what.

Freddie

I think Freddie still has a good relationship with Arsenal despite what you might’ve read in the papers, there’s been quotes on arsenal.com about how Wenger would like him to stay etc but nothing about Lauren. I think Ralph and Arsene have had a bit of a fall out and he’s looking to leave because of that but hopefully he stays. Both of the players will always be favourites of mine and I will always be fond of them if they do go. We’ll see how both situations develop.

Before the transfer window it was taken for granted that Jeremie Aliadiere would move on in January. However after a top performance at Anfield he might stay with Arsenal. Arsene has always been on about how Jeremie’s performances in training have earned him starting places but we’ve never seen evidence of that on the pitch, apart from Tuesday night. It was without a doubt the best I’ve seen him play and I’d definitely be one to say keep him. He’s be behind Henry, Van Persie, Adebayor and Baptista but what an option he is. I’m not sure he’d be so happy to be 5th choice, which is why I don’t blame him if he still wants to leave. He’s been at Arsenal for something like 9 years and I’m sure he feels it’s about time he played some regular football. I’ve always wanted to see him do well but when he’s played for us in the past he’s done nothing and looked as if he was just there to complete the numbers but after Tuesday’s performance I think he’s been noticed. I’m not sure now whether he’ll stay or go but we’ll see in the near future.

Aliadiere

Arsene Wenger said around his 10th anniversary at Arsenal that he doesn’t think he’ll make his 20th hinting he’ll be leaving in a few years. He’s made us what we are today and it’s no surprise that Arsenal are trying to offer him a long-term deal. I always thought Wenger would stick around and settle us into our new stadium and then move on and that’s what he was saying a few months ago. I can’t think of any Arsenal fan that would want him to go so hopefully he’ll accept this new contract he’s been offered. He’s be on £3m a year if he did sign this new deal and I think it’s money well spent. We won’t find out until the Summer I think about where the manager’s future lies but everyone is hoping it’s with Arsenal Football Club. He’s brought in all these youngsters that are going to be the future and he’s got to be the one to bring that side up to the full level.

The only other real news is about ‘The Beast’. He’s been talking about how he had a little talk with Henry that helped his game. Also he’s said he wants to repay Wenger’s faith in him by becoming an important player at Arsenal. It’s still unsure whether he’ll return to Madrid at the end of his loan or stay at Arsenal but I think at the moment things are swaying our way. Hopefully Arsene realises now that he is a striker after his 4 goals on Tuesday night and he’ll get more games in that position this season. I think he’s only just starting to adapt to the Premiership but it’s still going to take quite a bit of time before he’s fully adjusted to the English game. We’ll get the best out of Baptista if he stays on after his loan because it’ll be at least next season before he’s ready. He’s still getting muscled off the ball and for a player nicknamed ‘The Beast’ that’s not very good; the Premiership is completely different to La Liga so I’m putting it down to that for the moment.

The Beast?

That’s enough for today, build up to the Blackburn game later this week. Bye-bye.

6-3

What an extraordinary game. Well we thought that the game on Saturday was good but this was something else. We started with Kolo partnering Djourou at the back as captain with Hoyte and Traore on the wings. Then the midfield had Denilson on the left, Walcott on the right with Song and Fabregas is the middle. Upfront we had a partnership of Aliadiere and Baptista. Every player on the pitch played well, there was not a single one that played badly…including Song.

The strike partnership worked beautifully and we were extremely tight at the back as on Saturday. Denilson was in an unfamiliar position in left midfield but he was excellent too there and I never noticed he’s a great crosser of the ball. The game started just like it did on Saturday with Liverpool having most of the possession but Arsenal coping with their pressure. Mark Gonzalez picked up a serious injury early on and the game was stopped for about 5 minutes. That turned the game for Arsenal and we were away. There’s only really time to talk about the goals so here you go:

Jeremie Aliadiere opened the scoring in the 27th minute out of nowhere. The ball was in defence with Kolo Toure but the skipper saw Aliadiere up front and played a wonderful long-ball up to him which he took down beautifully to be one-on-one with the ‘keeper. Dudek saved his first shot but Jeremie was able to snatch the rebound and go past Dudek to slot it in the empty net. 1-0 to Arsenal, a good start for the young guns.

1-0

The lead was short-lived though, Fowler equalized 5 minutes later. Song was booked for a sloppy challenge outside the box giving Liverpool a free kick in a dangerous position. Fabio Aurelio shot and Almunia saved well down to his right but the ball went to Luis Garcia just wide of the goal. He played it back in and Fowler scored with this little back-flick right in front of Almunia and it would’ve been a very difficult save to make. 1-1 now and you wondered how the youngsters could bounce back.

Baptista regained out lead in the 40th minute with a brilliant free kick. With a similar attempt a few minutes earlier Julio mucked up a pass to Toure for one of his belters but this one was all his. You could see the look in his eyes as he was about to take it; he was just standing there breathing heavily like a beast. He knew he could score it and I said he would to my mates at the pub, and so did Arsene Wenger to Pat Rice. I had known that The Beast is a superb free kick taker and a lot of people we expecting this to go it. He hit it over the wall with an unbelievable amount of dip and bend and it went right in the bottom left corner leaving Dudek stranded. 2-1 up, now the challenge was to keep the lead and not give it away like we did last time.

Bap's free kick

There was added time in the first half of 6 minutes because of that bad injury at the beginning and we scored two goals in those 6 minutes. The first came from none over than Alex Song. When I saw him in the box for the corner I was like oh god what’s Song doing there and then started explaining how shit he was and as I was talking Song netted our third! Denilson whipped in a great free kick and it missed the heads of about 3 players and the insane Dudek who’d flung himself in the air to get it. The ball came down the back post where it bounced in of Song’s arm. I don’t think Alex knew a great deal about it but he’d scored! Alex Song had scored! It wasn’t a handball, he didn’t stick his arm out or anything, it just hit him, but I don’t think that’ll worry Alex too much.

SONG SCORES!

Baptista added the forth just before half time. Alex Song on confidence from his goal played a great ball to Julio who did some nice little tricks to confuse the defence and then played a ball into Aliadiere. Baptista continued his run and he was open in the middle for a shot at goal. All Jeremie had to do was square it to the Beast and he tapped it into the net to take us to 4-1 up at half time.

4-1

10 minutes into the second half and we won a penalty, it just wasn’t Liverpool’s day. It was a bit of a dubious decision and you might say Hyypia got the ball when he tripped Aliadiere. The Beast didn’t care though and placed the ball on the spot hoping to complete his hat trick. He shot to the left and it was a comfortable height for Dudek to make the save. No hat trick for Baptista just now but it didn’t take much longer for it to come.

Just before the hour mark The Beast did manage to get his third. Djourou defended well right by the corner flag stealing the ball off Bellamy, he then played the ball to Cesc who delivered a great long ball to Aliadiere on the left and we were the complete opposite end of the pitch in a matter of four seconds. Jeremie got past one defender and played a great square ball to Baptista who was unmarked 30 yards from goal. He took a couple of touches and powered the ball right into the bottom corner to complete his hat trick, it was an excellent goal and Dudek had no chance in saving. Out of The Beast’s three goals so far it was hard to pick the best one.

Beast's hat trick

5-1 up surely game over but the Anfield faithful inspired there team to go on a bit of a comeback. In the 67th minute a free kick was played in by Alonso from the right into the box, it went deep and was headed back in. Then it was nodded it Gerrard on the edge of the box who unleashed one of his specialist volleys into the opposite corner of the net. A stunning goal to take the score to 5-2. No ‘keeper in the world would’ve been able to save that sweetly struck bullet by Gerrard.

At 5-2 we were still three up but Liverpool were pushing for a comeback. In the 79th minute Hyypia made up for his terrible defending by scoring a header taking the score to 5-3. The ball was crossed in from the left and Sami was there at the near post to nod it in. I wondered if the youngsters could maintain that 2 goal lead and with 10 minutes + extra time there was every chance for Liverpool to complete an incredible comeback.

Julio Baptista got his 4th and Arsenal 6th to put the game to bed with 5 minutes of normal time remaining. We were defending near the corner flag again and I think it was Toure who smashed the ball to the other end. Cries of ‘HOOF’ rang around the stadium, not sure what set of fans it was from but we scored from that hoof. The long-ball went down the right wing and Aliadiere sprinted from the centre to get it, look here when they show the replay to see how incredibly quick is. So he ran over and got the ball and did brilliantly to muscle out his defender, then he squared the ball centre for the charging in Baptista to slot the ball in and make it Arsenal 6, Liverpool 3. It’s not everyday you get to say that. The credit for the gaol has to go to Aliadiere though; he did really well in that move and in the whole game. If it weren’t for Baptista’s 4 goals he’d be man of the match by a long way.

6-3

So the final score was 6-3 and you can see all of the goals here. A magnificent display from the youngsters and I’d be very exited about the future if I were you. With the exception of Cesc and Kolo all of these players were reserve or youth players and to put 6 past Liverpool is some achievement. Okay, the home team didn’t have their strongest team out but it was one that included Gerrard, Dudek, Alonso, Hyypia, Gonzalez, Garcia, Carragher, Bellamy and Robbie Fowler. Another positive thing was the return of Abou Diaby, he cam on in the 73rd minute and got a good run out. It was nice to see him back playing and I thought he played quite good for the time he was on the pitch. I look forward to seeing him playing some more over the course of the season.

I wasn’t sure if I wanted us to win this one but I was absolutely loving the game and now looking forward to playing Spurs. I’m quite sure Wenger will play a reasonable side for the two-legged semi final against Spurs but we’ll think about that nearer the time.

Next up it’s Blackburn on Saturday, another one of our bogey ties but hopefully we can find confidence from these two wins at Anfield to win at Ewood Park. We beat them 6-2 down here but it won’t be so simple up at Blackburn. Build up that in the week. Thanks for reading, have a good day.

Liverpool Preview – Part 2 9 January, 2007

Anfield

So tonight we make the second trip to Anfield, this time it’s the Carling Cup. It’ll be a very different side to the one we saw on Saturday so it’ll be a completely different game. The big team news ahead of the game is that Diaby is back in the squad. He came back to full training last week and he must’ve done very well to be in the squad so soon. I don’t expect Abou to start though, we might see him late on for a run-out but I doubt we’ll see him at all. Nonetheless, it is still fantastic news that Diaby is back in the squad and hopefully he’ll be pushing for first team places soon. Gallas and Lauren were expected to be back for this one too but both are out of the squad will minor niggles. Both should be fully fit for the trip to Blackburn on Saturday.

The starting 11 is very hard to predict. I’m assuming Almunia will be in goal with Traore, Djourou, Senderos and Hoyte in defence. Then in midfield I’m guessing it’ll be Walcott, Flamini, Denilson and Rosicky/Hleb. Then up front we’d have Baptista and Aliadiere. However that is me just guessing at the team; Wenger might chose to play Henry to get some matched under his belt and Fabregas who was suspended for the FA Cup game. There are many options for Wenger to go for but that team above is the most likely 11 in my opinion.

It’s really strange me saying this and I’m sure a few of you won’t understand but I’m not sure whether I want us to win this game. The reason being we’ll play Tottenham over two legs in the next round if we progressed and we’ll field a weakened team. Spurs will put their strongest team out for the Carling Cup and my fear is that we could get beaten by Tottenham. It’s not so much just that but the fact the Spurs could become the first team to win at Ashburton Grove if all this happens. I’d much prefer to get knocked out tonight than have Spurs claiming to be the first team ever to beat us at our new stadium. We would never ever ever hear the end of it and our Grandchildren would be tainted about it in years to come. Okay it’s only the Carling Cup we’ll say but they won’t care, they’d of still beaten us. So if we get beaten tonight I will see the brighter side of it but if we do progress then I’ll be right behind the team to beat the old rivals and make it to Cardiff.

Tonight’s game was scheduled to be played a month ago but was called off due to heavy fog on the pitch. I feel sorry for the Gooners who made the long trip up there for nothing so hopefully their efforts are rewarded tonight. I’ll have a match report up soon.

Anfield in the fog

Yesterday Anthony Stokes finally sorted out his future and he’s moved to Sunderland for £2m. I’m not over the moon that he’s left Arsenal but at least he’s sorted it out and we won’t have to worry about him anymore. I’m not sure if there’s any buy back clause in the contract but he’s signed a 3 and a half year deal with Roy Keane’s Black Cats. Good luck Stokesy in the Championship.

Kolo Toure is so confident he says we can win the treble. Well not ‘the treble’ but Kolo reckons we can win The Carling Cup, FA Cup and Champions League. That would be nice. We’ve never won the league cup under Wenger so I suppose it would be nice to win it this year, the FA Cup is always a favourite of Arsenal’s and to be the first team to win at the new Wembley would be Amazing. We came so close to winning Europe’s biggest prize last year and it would be beyond my wildest dream to get it this year. The heartbreak from coming so close last year was hard to manage but to be the winners in 2007 would make up for everything. We’re doing okay at the moment and we’ve got a good tie so we’ll se how it goes. This is what Kolo said about winning all three cup competitions:

“It’s possible. I think we have the squad and we have all our players coming back – Titi last week and we had William [Gallas] today in training. Everybody is coming back and we know with the squad we’ve got, and with the qualities we’ve got, we can make it. It’s going to be really difficult, but we are determined. We just need to believe in ourselves and to take it game by game, and try to win every time. Liverpool is a really good team and we know that, in the here and now, we need to do something great for the fans and ourselves. We played a really good game against Charlton and we hope to make it twice against Liverpool.”

It’s a bit of a long shot winning all three but at least the players believe we can. We should be aiming to win competitions anyway we’ve just got to believe we can.

Kolo celebrates with the boys

And finally, Bendtner’s ankle injury isn’t as bad as first thought and will only be out for a few weeks. It was feared that Nick broke his ankle against Newcastle but the scan revealed it wasn’t that bad and he’ll be back within the month. This is good news for Arsenal because breaking something is never good for a player’s career and if he does stay with Arsenal long-term then it’s good he hasn’t broken it.

Right then. Enjoy the game tonight, win or lose. Thanks for reading.

Arsenal vs Bolton

The draw for the 4th round of the FA Cup was made this afternoon and Arsenal will face Bolton; the match will be played at Ashburton Grove on the 27th/28th January. It’s another tough tie for us and I thought we’d be awarded an easier match after having to knock out the holders Liverpool in the third round. Bolton have been our bogey team recently but the problem has usually been visiting the Reebok. It’s the first cup game at home this season and I think we might’ve been in a bit of trouble if it was at their ground. We lost 3-1 at the Reebok earlier in the season but I think we should beat them when they visit us for this one.

We’ll be looking for a bit of revenge for what they did to us in the Premiership and I don’t think they’ll be too happy about the draw either, they knocked us out of the FA Cup last year but Arsenal will be looking to right those wrongs this time. Chelsea continue their luck with the domestic cup draws as they’ve got Nottingham Forest, they knocked out Charlton in the last round but I doubt they can do the same to Chelsea this time round. Manchester United have got Pompey at home, a fairly tricky tie but I expect them to progress. So we’ve got Bolton in the 4th round of the FA Cup, more build up to that nearer the time.

Adebayor at the Reebok

The main news at the moment is Anthony Stokes. Nobody really knows where he is going. On Saturday it looked like he was going to Charlton and was having a medical for Alan Pardew’s side. It seemed like it was a done deal but now everyone is saying he’s going to Roy Keane’s Sunderland; and just to mix it up he’s saying he hasn’t ruled out Celtic. I suppose I’m still slightly bitter at Wenger letting Stokes go, I thought he should’ve been given another loan but hopefully Arsene knows what he’s doing here.

Anthony took the SPL by storm and when he returned from his loan quite a few Gooners were exited to see how he’d fare for Arsenal. However as soon as he returned talks turned to finding Stokes a pernament move away from Ashburton Grove. Maybe Arsene has predicted this boy won’t be as good as we think and if he has he’s a genius but he looks alright to me. Anyway, something is likely to get sorted out this week for Antony’s departure. I would’ve liked to have seen him play in the Carling Cup tomorrow night but it doesn’t look like he’s going to be an Arsenal player for much longer now.

Arturo Lupoli is also looking to find a deal to move away from Arsenal. He’s been saying that a move back to Italy might be on the cards but Arturo is considering saying at Derby. He’s doing well there on loan at the moment and he scored a hattrick the other week so I’m sure the Rams would be keen to keep him. His Arsenal contract expires in the Summer so I’m pretty sure it’ll all get sorted out then.

Lupoli

Arsene Wenger has praised Tomas Rosicky for his double-goal scoring display at Anfield on Saturday saying he can become the next Ljungberg/Pires. We need a goalscoring midfield so not to rely on the strikers so much and Super-Tom looks like he’s the man. He was unlucky with injuries earlier in the season but he’s back now and I’m sure he’ll be looking to add to the three goals he’s scored so far this season. Here’s what Le Boss had to say:

“He can be like Ljungberg and Pires. Together they scored 25 goals a season and that is worth a lot of points. At the moment we haven’t had that and it is important to get it, especially in games like [Saturday's] when the strikers get a little less service. It is important that goals come from midfield. Rosicky can score more goals because he is quick, he has good timing and he is very accurate in his finishing. I think he puts too much pressure on himself to finish and he sometimes rushes his decision making. I hope this will help him to be more calm in front of goal.”

Tomas has got big shoes to fill but I think he can do it, Wenger has pulled off a great signing here and hopefully he’ll Rosicky will fulfill his potential. We’ve been playing him out wide but it is clear he prefers to play as a central attacking midfielder; his first goal on Saturday was in that postition. I’m not sure whether Wenger told him to go there or whether he naturally drifted into the middle but it worked. I look forward to seeing how the season continues for the Czech.

Tomas Rosicky

That’s about it for today. I’ll try to get a match preview up tomorrow ahead of our Carling Cup game. Have a good day.

3-1 to The Arsenal

What an amazing day. I got the 11 o’clock train out of London Euston and arrived in Liverpool at about half 2, stupidly I started walking to the stadium not having a clue how far it actually was. Along the way a Scoucer told us that the ground was miles away and we got a bus to the ground. Anfield is a really nice ground; The Hillsborough memorial is a nice touch too. There were plenty of Gooners about singing before the game and everyone felt pretty confident before the game. I was sitting lower tier, 10 seats from the edge of the stand, not an amazing view but I could still see everything and we were right next to the Scoucers which was good.

There was a massive following of Gooners there, we’d been allocated a large number of seats and they were sold out for some time. We made a great noise but so did the Anfield faithful. One of the things I was interested to see (or hear) was the famous atmosphere, and it lived up to the expectation. They did this 6 minutes for 96 (the amount off people that died) thing where they sang about the Hillsborough disaster and held things up saying ‘The Truth’ which was to do with what The Sun newspaper said about the disaster. When the six minutes was up there was this massive roar from the Liverpool fans, it was quite inspiring really and you wonder what Ashburton Grove would be like if we had different fans. Our ground has become too corporate but yesterday they stadium was full of all the die-hard fans.

The team was as I expected apart from Manuel Almunia was in goal, I still can’t understand why he was but he did alright. He made no mistakes but to be fair he didn’t have alot to do. Liverpool were dominating possession however they couldn’t really form any dangerous attacks. They tried to but we were excellent at the back. The two centre defenders had a massive game. They got something on every hoof Liverpool tried and made it so difficult for Liverpool to create anything.

Yee-Haw!

We weren’t creating anything either though but we were very dangerous from the counter-attack and all three goals came from these. For the first goal Rosicky picked up the ball in the middle and played Hleb down the right wing, then some clever link up play gave Alex some room out wide. Liverpool packed the box expecting the to cross and left ‘Super-Tom’ unmarked on the edge of the box. Hleb passed to Rosicky who shot first time with a looping shot over the ‘keeper, as soon as it left his foot you could tell it was going it and Dudek was struggling. When it went in I and thousands of other Gooners’ who’d made the long trip north went fucking mental. The goal was against the run of play but we were not complaining. Arsenal were 1-0 up with 8 minutes of the half to go.

1-0

We weren’t finished with the first 45 though; Tomas Rosicky added another just before the whistle. Henry gave the Czech the ball in a fairly safe position as far as Liverpool were concerned but Tom just drove and drove and avoided tackles from about 5 defenders. He shot low into the far corner, which the stretched Dudek couldn’t get to. Arsenal were now two goals up in a matter of minutes and the Arsenal fans went insane again. If the Scoucers were to lay the blame on anyone it would have to be Steven Gerrard. Just before Rosicky shot Gerrard was there for the tackle but his attempt at getting the ball was so feeble I just don’t have a clue what he was doing. He just sort of stuck his foot out a bit and spun round. It was him who won the Cup for Liverpool last year but you might say it was him who lost it for them this year.

2-0

So we went in at half time two goals to the good. The bloke in front of me said it is a very dodgy score line and he was right. The next goal was so important, a third for Arsenal would put it to bed but a Liverpool goal could start a comeback and we all know how good they are at those. The home team came out with a bang in the second half, they’d obviously been told to go at us from the word go and we were struggling with them a bit. However, that sort of play does suit us attacking-wise, as soon as we got the ball all we had to do was pass it around in all the space from Liverpool’s lack of shape. However as in the first half they were finding it hard to create any clear-cut chances. They did come close a few times and Ashley’s boyfriend was getting down the right wing well.

Ashley's boyfriend

In the 72nd minute Liverpool did mange to get a goal back. It came from a corner which Crouch headed towards goal and then Kuyt got a flick on to confuse Almunia. There was nothing we could’ve really done about it to be fair, it was a well taken corner and the only thing really was that nobody challenged Dirk Kuyt for his touch. It went straight above Almunia but you can’t really complain at him for not saving it.

After the goal Liverpool really looked like they were going to come back. All I could do is just stand there and watch nervously. We just couldn’t keep the ball to save our lives; every time we won it back it was only a matter of seconds before we gave it away again. It was incredibly frustrating to watch and you just hoped that we wouldn’t concede again. Thankfully Senderos and Toure were excellent at the back and let nothing pass. As time went by I believed more and more that we were going to hang on to the lead and win. We needed to get the ball and slow it down to keep possession but the home side were having none of it and really made it hard for us to do anything.

Gilberto

In the end it took a single-handed effort from Thierry Henry for us to get our third 5 minutes from time. He picked up the ball near the centre circle and played a through ball to himself down the left. Carragher nearly won the ball but Henry’s speed and strength won through and Jamie was left on the floor out wide. Henry drove into the box, skipped passed the defender and shot low underneath Dudek to make it 3-1. It wasn’t a particularly great shot, a better goalie might’ve saved it but it wasn’t to be. Thierry ran over to the fans saying: “I’m back. I’m back!” And he is, I fancied him to score today and he did.

3-1

Nothing much really happened after that, the remainder of the game was just spent singing about Wembley and waving goodbye to the Scoucers. It was a bit of a rush after the game as we packed onto a bus and it looked like we were going to miss the last train home but in the end we made it to the station in plenty of time and there was even a few minutes to get a pasty and snacks for the journey home.

The Arsenal players celebrate the win

It was an amazing day and one I will never forget. Just an amazing day out and I will definitely be going to more long distance away games. If the score went the other way it could’ve been a very different day but I think we played well enough and deserved the win in the end. And as we sang at Anfield:

“We’ll be back, we’ll be back. We’ll be back on Tuesday night.”

Liverpool Preview – Part 1 5 January, 2007

Kolo Toure

Tomorrow we make our first of two trips to Anfield in three days. First up it’s the FA Cup, which will hopefully see Wenger putting out a strong side. We’re looking okay selection-wise, Baptsita is back in the squad after his injury but we’re without the influential Cesc Fabregas through suspension. Wenger says Eboue will play but doesn’t want to risk Lauren by rushing him back early, I expect him to start on Tuesday. Diaby and Glass made their returns to training this week, which is excellent news, hopefully they’ll get match fit quickly and we’ll be seeing them back in the team soon.

We did very well against Liverpool earlier in the season beating them comfortably 3-0. A repeat of that would be fantastic but I expect it to be a bit closer than that tomorrow. The Scoucers have been doing quite well recently; they beat Bolton 3-0 on Monday with a convincing performance. We have to watch out for Crouch and especially his aerial threat at set pieces. Also Gerrard is one of the best in my mind and I feel we need to close him down and make it hard for him to play his game. If you let Liverpool play they can punish you but the same goes for us to be honest. It’s great we’ve got Thierry back and hopefully he’ll cause some problems tomorrow as will RVP who had a great game on Tuesday night. Kolo and Phil need to keep it tight at the back but if they perform like they can they’ll have no problems.

I’m making to trip up north tomorrow. I’ve been exited for this one for some time now and hopefully Arsene doesn’t disappoint me with a weak team. I’m not sure if he’ll put 4 or 5 across the middle but I can understand the reasons behind both. This is the team I hope Wenger picks:

Team for Liverpool

I’d like to see Baptista alongside Gilberto but I’d be extremely surprised if Wenger played him in this one. I can’t really thing of anyone else Wenger would play in the middle ahead of Flamini anyway. If Arsene does go for a 4-5-1 I’d expect that same team with Van Persie moving to the wing and Rosicky dropping more central. Even with all those absences I think it’s quite a good team and one that can cause Liverpool some problems. I’m sure it’s going to be a great game tomorrow. Liverpool vs. Arsenal and it’s the FA Cup. Both teams will be desperate to win the trophy this year and going out at this early stage would be a disaster. I’m pretty confident ahead of tomorrow’s game but we’ll see how it goes, you never know how Arsenal are going to play, hopefully tomorrow it’s good.

Gallas scores against Liverpool

Unfortunately, Anthony Stokes looks to be on his was out of Arsenal. Wenger is letting him go and doesn’t seem that upset about it. If a reserve player goes on loan and does brilliantly well and we sell him what does it say to the other youngsters? I was hoping we’d keep Anthony but it doesn’t look that way. I can’t believe Arsene is giving Aliadiere a chance instead of Stokes. The whole thing is just bizarre to me but it’s looks like he’ll be off to Charlton next week for about £2m or so.

Another International friendly has been arranged for the Emirates stadium next month. Brazil vs. Portugal will take place on the 6th February. The South American derby was a huge success the other month and now we’ve got the samba stars doing their stuff here again. Unfortunately I didn’t get to the last game but I might go to this one, I can imagine it would be interesting to see a team other that Arsenal playing and I very rarely get to internationals.

nullnull

Joe O’Cearuill has joined Brighton on a month’s loan just as Matthew Connolly did recently. O’Cearuill joined Arsenal from the Watford reserves so I don’t really expect him to make it big for Arsenal in the future to be honest. All the best to Joe with his loan.

Right, it’s off to Anfield tomorrow morning. I’m predicting 2-0 With Henry and Gilberto scoring. I’ll be coming down with a massive grin on my face if that’s what happens otherwise it’s going to be a very long 4 hours back. I’ll have a match report up Sunday…probably, until then.

Who needs Henry when we’ve got Van Persie and Adebayor 4 January, 2007

Adebayor

It’s great news that Thierry Henry has made a successful return after his long spell out on the sidelines, he scored in his comeback game and will be looking to add many more. The captain says he is feeling the benefits of taking the break, he admits it was a mistake to try and play through the injury at the start of he season and he really should of taken some time out then. Now he’s “fresh” and hopefully he’ll make up on the games he missed out on by scoring lot of goals this season. If Henry wants to keep his Golden Boot his going to have to find a bit of form, he’s not even in the top 10 and Drogba is leading the way with 13 Premiership goals.

In Thierry’s absence we’ve done very well in the goal department, Robin has 12, Gilberto is level with Henry on 8, Ade has 7 and Flamini has come up with 4. When Henry left the team I think it helped Adebayor and Van Persie alot, not only were they pretty much guaranteed a place but they got alot more of the ball: When Titi is in the team every play goes through him. Without Henry they ball was spread evenly and Fabregas, Van Persie, Adebayor, Hleb etc got to do a great deal more.

I was never Ade’s biggest fan but he’s been a huge hit for us this season. Before I hoped he never played but now I truly believe we have a bit of a selection problem. Also Van Persie has been having a great season, I’ve always liked the Dutchman but he’s improved alot this season and has become alot less selfish, which was his main problem last year. Hopefully the return of the world’s best striker doesn’t ruin any of their form but it does mean we’ve now got three excellent strikers if one gets injured or whatever. It’s also a great option to have a class striker on the bench to change things when games aren’t going to plan.

Thierry has praised the duo that replaced him in his absence, they scored 7 goals together in the time Henry was out and the skipper has been telling arsenal.com how proud he is:

“I am really pleased for Manu Adebayor, he was criticised for a lack of goals or a lack of commitment or whatever when he arrived but it always takes time to settle in and what he is doing at the moment is amazing. Robin too. He is playing as a centre forward and is showing he can score goals. If his head is right he can be in the years to come one of the best ever in the Premiership. He is going that way and it would be good for him to finish as our top scorer. That’s why when the penalty was given against Charlton I thought it would be nice for him to score in the game and I gave him the ball. I don’t mind him scoring more than me, goals don’t matter so much for me. If they did I wouldn’t have given him the ball for the penalty.

I have always said I’m not a ‘natural-born killer’ in front of goal. If I have to give a ball I will try to do that. I used to get hammered about that in my first two or three years because people said I wasn’t a ‘killer’ but if you look at my stats they are good.

I don’t think you should compare them [Bergkamp and Van Persie]. Bergkamp was Bergkamp and Van Persie will be Van Persie. Robin is already getting to that level, he is doing it already in the Dutch national team and for Arsenal. I think it’s up to him how far he is going to go. I never compare players like that, Dennis was special and we want Robin to be himself and make his name.”

Some nice words from Thierry there, I’m sure Ade and Robin will appreciate that. It would be weird if Robin finished top scorer for Arsenal, we’re so used to it being Henry it would be a nice change to see Robin get some goals. I think he’s suspended for the FA Cup game, I’ll verify that in the week. Fabregas is suspended though after picking up that silly yellow card in Sheffield. There’s talk that there could be a weak side out but there’s going to have to be if we’ve got all these injuries and suspensions. Henry should start, he targeted this as his comeback game and I still think he will play, he needs the games to get back into the swing of things and pick up some form.

Henry

Our third choice right-back Justin Hoyte scored his first Arsenal goal on Tuesday night and he’s told us how he’s not worried about the return of Eboue and Lauren:

“Lauren’s return is good for the team. There are three players that play in that position and it keeps us all on our toes. Eboue’s injured at the moment and I’ve stepped in and I’m playing well but Manu was playing fantastically well when he was playing. As a player you approach it that you’ve got to work hard in training and play well on the pitch, and if you’re doing well, and playing well, you’ll stay in the team. In my youth team days I used to be a striker so I just tried to get the best contact possible and then I checked again just to make sure it went in. You can see from my celebration how much it meant to me and I don’t score often so I thought I might as well have a little dance. I’d like to make as many appearances as I can and as far as winning goes I think the Club can win everything possible. That’s what I believe. I think we go into every game believing we can win it, so why can’t we win all the trophies?”

To be fair, Justin isn’t really going to challenge the others for that first team place just yet but I think in time he’ll have a shot. I think he’s got a bright future ahead of him and it’s nice to have an English player for once.

Hoyte for England

It is January so I suppose there should be a bit of transfer news. Falkirk boss John Hughes is still waiting to find out what’s happening with Anthony Stokes. Gianluigi Buffon‘s agent has said he will be allowed to leave Serie B if he wants to. Birmingham are apparently close to signing Seb Larsson permanently. And finally, Marseille’s Franck Ribery says he’ll need alot of persuading to leave France.

Thanks for reading.
