Van Persie’s injury much worse than expected 23 January, 2007

RVP

Robin Van Persie is going to be out of action for at least 6 weeks or more. Six weeks today is the 6th March, we play PSV at home on the 7th. It’s a long time out and we probably won’t see Robin back to his best this season. Luckily we’ve got talented back-up options but he’s our top scorer this season and we’re certainly going to miss him. Robin broke his fifth metatarsal celebration Henry’s winner on Sunday, usually the going mad part is left to the fans but the Dutch striker went a bit over the top too. This is what Arsene said about the injury:

“We have lost Robin van Persie for a while. How long? I don’t really know. It will be six weeks at least, if not more. It is a big blow because Robin has been on fire. He has had a great season until now. What is really terrible for me is that I did not want to use him at all. But we were 1-0 behind and I decided to put him on. However he got injured and you can never predict that.”

We’ve got three top strikers in Henry, Adebayor and Baptista and as long as all three stay fit we’ll be okay. Also Aliadiere will be keen to impress in the period and if he plays like he did at Anfield then I’m sure he’ll get a few games. He’s been linked with a move to Ligue 1′s Sochaux but with RVP’s injury I don’t think Wenger will be letting him leave this January. Also if things get really bad (touch wood) I believe we’ll be able to recall Bendtner from Birmingham if we get that desperate. This injury might be the difference between us stealing 2nd or scraping 4th so the others will have to perform well to keep us in the race.

Van Persie

Tomorrow we make the short trip to White Hart Lane for Tottenham vs. Arsenal Reserves in the 1st leg of the Carling Cup Semi Final. Last night Arsenal Youths lost 3-0 to Tottenham reserves but hopefully tomorrow will be a different story. The team is likely to be the same as the one that put 6 past Liverpool but Diaby could be set for his first start in a year. Here’s what Wenger said ahead of tomorrow’s game:

“I’ll stick with the same type of side; they deserve it. It is very difficult to say ‘listen you are good enough to play at Liverpool but you are not good enough to play at Tottenham’. They have earned the right. We are in a job where only quality decides whether you play or not. It is not how old you are or what you did before. Just on the day you have to turn up and show how good you are. Certainly Diaby is coming back and will play on Wednesday.”

It will be my first visit to the Shithole and I’m quite looking forward to our youngsters teaching the scum a lesson. If they could pull off something similar to the result in the last round I will be a very happy man but I’ll settle for a draw to be honest. If we have a bad game this leg, Wenger still has the option of strengthening the team with a few more established team players for the Emirates tie.

The team is quite difficult to predict as I am unsure of the fitness of Ljungberg, Gallas and Djourou. The only players I am sure will start are Almunia, Hoyte, Traore, Diaby, Walcott, Denilson, Aliadiere and Baptista. I don’t know who’ll be at centre back. Djourou or Gallas will if they’re fit but otherwise I suppose it’ll be Connolly and maybe Ryan Garry? In midfield along with those other three I mentioned it’ll probably be Randall or Lansbury. Not a bad team and certainly one I am confident can beat Spurs. I have a lot of faith in our youngsters and I believe they can do well in the competition. In the other Semi it’s between Chelsea and Wycombe. They’re playing the 2nd leg at Stamford Bridge as I type; it’s currently 1-0 to Chelsea and 2-1 on aggregate to them.

The only other news is Henry saying we can still win the league and a mad story that Anelka fancies a move back to Arsenal. A bit silly you might think but with only 3 top strikers fit at the moment there may be something there but I’d prefer him to stay well away.

I’m off to cheer on Wycombe, see ya.

No way will Anelka come back. He says something different every 5 minutes anyway. I’m really looking forward to tomorrows game do you think we’ll see anything of Merida? I wouldn’t mind seeing what Denilson can do in the middle rather than on the left. He looked a bit out of it against the Scousers.

2. RobC - 23 January, 2007

I am certain that Denilson will start ahead of Randall and Lansbury, based upon recent Premiership bench appearances.

It will be a fascinating test of our 2nd XI against the spuds first team.

Happy days!

if you dont know what really happened you shouldnt be a blogger giving false information to fans.

Van Persie broke it while scoring his goal. He was seen, throughout the game after his injury, clutching his right leg and grimmacing, but playing through it. Get your facts straight before giving false information to others.

I know arsenal.com were saying he did it for the first goal but i never saw him in any trouble and I assumed becasue he played on it must’ve been the second. Oh well I was wrong, calm down.

DAVID….Everyone makes mistakes so why dont you let the chef be…Even Wenger first said he broke it while celebrating and later said it was actually while scoring.
You need to work on yourself mate.

6. Gunner 8 - 23 January, 2007

David, thought even Arsenal said that it was during the celebration… …the fact he was getting over ankle problems might be why he was clutching, no? How come you no it all then?

Chef I said earlier this afternoon on the Gunnerblog that I think it will be

Almunia
Hoyte Toure Djourou Clichy
Walcott Diaby Denilson Merida
Aliardiere Baptista

7. Gunner 8 - 23 January, 2007

Provisional squad: Almunia, Hoyte, Toure, Djourou, Connolly, Traore, Walcott, Diaby, Denilson, Julio Baptista, Aliadiere, Poom, Merida, Lansbury, Randall, Adebayor, Senderos, Flamini.

I would expect AW to save Flamini for Saturday the same stands for Adebayor.

Connolly is also in the squad so could play LB, pushing Traore up instead of Merida.

Senderos is also in the squad but without Gilberto, I think we need King Kolo’s leadership at the back, what do you think?

Randall could also play LM instead of Fran.

Lansbury probably won’t feature as he played yesterday

I am very exited for this one. Exited about the team Wenger is going to field. Heard a cheeky rumour Cesc might have some envolvement. Going down Highbury first for a pint if anyones around?

To David:

Easy! Van Perise scored with his left foot. His right did seem to buckle a bit under him as he struck the ball. But maybe even RVP doesn’t know the exact moment the bone got fractured.
I have done the same injury and recall it hurting after a game but not the precise second the injury happened.
Hardly a reason to jump down The Canon’s throat with your reproach.

Just a point about Bendtner, I think he is still injured too. Massive shame about RvP. This season he has been an impact player both from the start and from the bench. He clearly has the respect of the big players at the club now, especially Henry. I think your point that this could seriously affect our challenge for 2nd is spot on. But in saying that Adebayor is in great form, so to is Thierry, and Baptista can hopefully show more of the Anfield form. Fingers crossed!!

This is really going to test Arsene’s skill, not that I’m questioning it. I know he will put together the best set of guys, but I am disappointed that we have had so many injuries this year. I guess it gives us a chance to show them that even our backups are better then their first string! Go Gunners!

12. Justin - 24 January, 2007

Ho ho… now we’ve got yet ANOTHER injury, lets see how much sympathy we get if our form dips… Lets see how much we moan about it…. lets see if Arsene starts talking about quitting cuz the board wont give him another 1000 billion to spend….

Good result last night Watford beating the thugs and Robbie Sa***** breaking his leg..

Lets go you Gunners

13. lekan - 24 January, 2007

How many players do we have injured now?…Maureeno has just John Terry injured and he is whinging…What a bummer….Glad to see Robbie “Cunt” Savage injured…Tugay your neck is on the line…

14. Mos - 24 January, 2007

rewatched the arsenal game especially after VP had scored.. he didnt seem to be in no sign of having an injury.. i mean he prolly injured it while scoring the goal but he prolly was unaware of it!!… maybe a broken 5th metatarsal doesnt hurt much.

15. Amiripz - 24 January, 2007

What a shame really.
This teams needs RVP desperately. Let`s hope Henry, Adebayor and Baptista will suffice in his absence.

16. Gunner 8 - 25 January, 2007

I ejoyed the comeback!

17. Justin - 25 January, 2007

Good comeback yesterday. Best thing bout Denilson was that he looked strong. Even managed to knock a few spuds around. Theo didnt have the best of games but did the best he could i suppose. I dunno but Diaby didnt get in the game too much and i would’ve liked to see him in his natural position. Eboue looks so much better on the wing than he does at rightback. The 2 central defenders had a nervy first half but Toure especially got it together in the 2nd. Traore showed good and poor touches yesterday but theres promise. Aliediere worked hard and pity he got injured.

Anyone heard anything bout the injuries to Hleb, Eboue?
