Jens staying, Jose going, but what about Julio? 26 April, 2007

Jens Lehmann has announced he’ll stay at Arsenal for one more year. There’s nothing official coming out of Arsenal saying so but the German no.1 has said he’ll be here for another season and that Champions League football is his main factor for staying. Here’s the exact quote:

“I will play another season for Arsenal. It is a big club with sporting perspectives. That [the one-year deal] is not a problem. I do not necessarily have to extend for two years. For me, it depends on playing in the Champions League in the coming season. I wouldn’t like to sit in front of the TV on Wednesdays, thinking ‘I could have been there’.”

It’s not a very convincing quote but his intentions are clear: He wants Champions League football and he would’ve liked the two year deal but is not that bothered. He also added that he’s considered a return to Germany so I wouldn’t be surprised if he did one more year here and then went back to the Bundesliga. However he might not be our first choice keeper next year. We’ve been linked with Pele and Craig Gordon amongst others but we’ll see if Wenger gets out the Arsenal Chequebook in the summer.

The other bit of transfer news today is on Jose Reyes. As I’m sure you know he’s spent this year on loan at Real Madrid and is hoping on making that move permanent. He says that even if Madrid doesn’t want him he’ll find another club that does in Spain. He added his has no intention whatsoever to return to London. Also he started talking about the English climate again but we’ve heard that one hundred times before.

Julio Baptista

Part of his loan deal was Julio Baptista coming the other way. It’s a bit of an understatement to say ‘The Beast’ hasn’t had the best season ever. It’s been his first season in the English league, which was always going to be hard, but in the latter part of the season it became obvious he really is lacking in some of the vital ingredients as a football such as a first touch, control of the ball, awareness, positioning and finishing. All things that are part of the player, not things you can blame on the pace of the Premiership.

I was very exited at Baptista’s arrival and I even got ‘The Beast 9′ on the back of my shirt. However I’ve now become slightly embarrassed of it in a way. He probably still needs time to adapt and improve but that’s going to take another year or two and I don’t know whether we have the patience for that. Next season we’ll have Adebayor, Henry and Van Persie as our main 3. If he was to stay he’d be fighting for a place with Bendtner and the others and I really don’t think a top-flight footballer like him would be happy doing that. I see Julio moving on in the summer, it’s a shame he hasn’t done well but he’s simply not good enough.

That’s enough for today, see ya.

i agree that beast should go, with TH, RVP and ADebayor i think we need someone who wont mind sitting and waiting for their chance on the bench. aliadiere aint good enough so he should go too. no point in talk of us buying a striker for loads of money because he or previous mentioned aint gonna sit on bench. jobs tailor made for the young gun bendtner!!

2. Arsenal Analysis - 26 April, 2007

Its good for Arsenal that Lehmann is staying because he is a quality keeper and they are hard to find.
He occasionally makes mistakes as he is vulnerable on crosses especially from dead ball situations and his sprees outside the area leave a lot to be desired. However he is an excellent shot stopper, his positioning is very good and his record on one to one situations is not bad either. He is also very experienced and this is very important for Arsenal at the moment as there is a distinct absence of wise heads in the dressing room and on the pitch!
Also do not forget that he will cost nothing whereas his replacement will cost from 3m upwards.

i think wenger will simply go with walcott and bendter as 4th and 5th strikers. it’ll be abig gamble and frankly these last 2 seasons his gambles haven’t really worked. but we all knew we’d have to wait a few years for the young player to come good.

4. potter - 26 April, 2007

When did Jens suddenly get a wise head ? It is his lack of sanity which creates most of the problems at corners and set pieces.

5. lasagnechef - 26 April, 2007

I completely forgot about Walcott! Next season should be interesting :)

6. AusGunner - 26 April, 2007

Baptista’s record with Seville suggests that all those things are very much NOT a part of the player or are only part of the player at this point in time. If he wants out, so be it, all the best to him, but I still think that given time he could have something worthwhile to bring to the table.

7. The Beast - 26 April, 2007

Baptista will definitely become a better player once his future is sorted out. I think he has been affected by a mixture of factors, just to mention a few: this being his new season with Arse, some people take time to adapt, as well as uncertainty regarding his future….

8. tunadog - 26 April, 2007

I am mortified that Lehman is staying. The guy is a total liability & is the main reason for us continually conceding goals from set pieces He upsets the whole defence & gives noone any confidence. He has cost us so many goals with his antics .

9. christian griffith - 26 April, 2007

hmmm, that’s cool.

thanks.

10. Guns blazing - 26 April, 2007

Really disappointed that Jens is staying. Jens has and will continue to be a liability to the Arsenal. Jens has always let us down in critical must win or vital games. Remember how his lunacy cost us the Champs league last year, the penalty give away when we clinched the title at the scum in 2004 (can you imagine if the score was 1:1 at that point ?), the miskick at the champs league 1/4 final at stamford bridge, recently at the scum. Don’t know about you but the guy just let’s us down when it counts the most. We really need to part ways with this guy ?

11. JJ - 26 April, 2007

Really pissed off that Lehman is staying – don’t understand how Wenger does not see how many problems he causes. I’m afraid it will be another inconsistenet season with the defence.

12. Keats - 26 April, 2007

Give me a breakGunz blazing and JJ. Are you blaming our crap defence this year on Jens?

Time and time again he’s done his all to bail out the undisciplined back line. Well, come to think of it I believe we’ve had about 150 different combinations of back fours this season.

Nice of you to mention his one big F-up in the Champs League as well. His countless saves (Riquelme anyone) kept us in the competition and helped get us to the finals.
But fair enough, Lehman is a nutter, and I wish he’d just learn to get on with it when cunt strikers are winding him up, but other than that he’s world class.

I’m happy if he stays one more season, and if we bring in another keeper (like Gordon perhaps) it’ll give him a chance to transition into the squad.

13. Keats - 26 April, 2007

Oh, and one more thing, lasagnachef, don’t worry about the shirt, hindsight is 20/20 vision and all that—we all were fucking ecstatic when he arrived, that said I would be embarrassed to wear that shirt as well this year. If he’s given another year, I have a sinking feeling he’ll come good. I know it’s not a popular view, but I truely believe he will.

Hey juss stumbled on into ya site, am loving it. Heres my 2 cents worth..

Jens – 50/50 he’s a good keeper on his day, but prone to make mistake and lose his cool we need a solid keeper who doesn’t get riled up by opposition

Walcott – stunning talent, great future prospect, but has no right to be on the pitch in a prem’ship match.

Baptista – I had high hopes for him when he came, i even stuck up for him when my mates were calling for him to be dropped..but he’s made his own bed me thinks

Adebayor – I just hope we raise his wages so he stays on, i know he misses some sitters but scores some vital goals as well (plus he can teach a few of our players to be greedy with the shots on goal lol)

Reyes – Can stay in spain and rot

Fab – His names on the back of my shirt, nuff said.

People are acting like jens hasn’t been crazy all along. what part of that is surprising? zee mad german is still a good goalkeeper (although I’ll admit his last couple games have been shakey).

I think signing another keeper just to give him some competition should sharpen his mind a bit. look how much better he got when he knew he was auditioning for the world cup last season. we had a CL clean sheet.

B.

Heres my two cents worth – Shut the hell up and lick my nuts, bung!!!!!!!!!!

18. clash - 27 April, 2007

Jens should go. Age is taking the toll, silly mistakes, bad temper and lot of antics. We need to find another goal keeper.

Baptista has been disappointing to the core, he does not take positions, he does not score. He may let go.

Ade – Hardworking, but is not clinical.

19. nofrills - 27 April, 2007

HAHAHA you got the Beast No 9 on your shirt. You should of kept that to yourself!!!

Sorry couldn’t resist..

20. LAMO - 27 April, 2007

the whole of this season he has contributed greatly to arsenals dismal performance-65%.Infact he is the worst keeper in the premiership curently.

21. Norway Gooner - 27 April, 2007

Sure, Baptista has not been good enough for Arsenal this season, but if he stays on I would love it as he will be a tank when he adapts to life and the game. The Beast has great strenght and he shoots so hard like noone in the team. Also he can be a great header of the ball. We really need him in the Arsenal mix and I hope Wenger will let him stay.

22. Gooner71 - 27 April, 2007

Jens is a good stopper but flaps at corners – his decision making at set plays is terrible!! Most importantly his temperament is suspect – he loses his rag at every available opportunity. I still cant really forgive him for the terrible hash he made in the Champions League final last season which in truth lost Arsenal the match!!

I was hoping he would throw his toys out of the pram at a one year deal and quickly exit for a final payday with Bayern but it seems we may be stuck with him – although with rumours of other keepers on the way maybe he will still go if he feels he will not be number one??

What we realy need is a strong , experienced centre back to replace the seemingly Madrid bound Gallas – a strong combative midfielder to complement the skill of Fabregas – and a top quality striker – someone around the 25-26 mark with experience at the top level and a natural goal scorer!! We really need cover for Henry and Van Persie – we havent been able to find that special goal since their injuries – you know the one that wins those close games!!

Its all well and good bringing young players through but we really need players for the here and now – if things go well then we will have a clutch of good young players ready to fill the breach when the older ones start to fade but without the pressures they face at the moment !!

23. amiripz - 27 April, 2007

1. Personally I would want a new goalie. Boruc of Celtic impressed me a lot and I think he would have been perfect for Arsenal. Never mind though, as long as Lehman is in form;

2. As far as Baptista and especially Reyes are concerned, I wish them the best iN Spain and may them never appear in PL again.

24. The Saint - 27 April, 2007

I agree that with Ade, Henry, van P and Theo returning, it’s hard to see where Aladiere and the Beast will fit in. In addition, Bendtner, who I rate very highly is also waiting in the wings. Midfield is also crowded with talent and so it’s not as if Ala and Beastie can even consider other positions although with his size and bulk, perhaps a spell at centrehalf, filling in for the departing Gallas could be an option? : ) More likely, Beastie will be on the Madrid bench next season while Ala will be leading the line for Middlesbro replacing the departing Viduka.

I think they should get some of the prostitutes who won the ladies title to play in the first team.

God knows they need the money and it might keep the dirty scrubbers off the streets

Ugh Blog Head.

27. bluurb - 27 April, 2007

surely wenger will sell reyes as he needs cash to buy anyone half decent before chelski, man utd red socks and now liverpool jets get in before them. be interesting to see if Thierry Henry has the appetite for it next season after looking so subdued this year. As for the Beast, I’m not surprised you feel embarrassed wearing it. You might as well have the slogan “can’t get it up” on the back of your shirt.
