Lukasz Fabianski

This weekend it was officially announced that we have signed Polish goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski. The 22 year old has signed on a long-term contract from Legia Warsaw. He won the championship in 2006 with them, and has also been named the best goalie in the league for 2006 and 2007. He was also was named in the Squad for the World Cup squad last year. His name is pronounced ‘Woo-Kash Fab-Yan-Ski’ encase you’re wondering.

With Lehmann confirming he’ll be staying for at least another year we were not on the hunt for a world-class no.1 this summer. Fabianski isn’t a top ‘keeper yet but is still young, he’ll slot into the squad nicely and fight for his place. Wenger said that if Jens had left, Almunia would’ve just been promoted anyway. So we now have Lehmann, Fabianski and Almunia for next season, a good selection and I’m sure Wenger will do all he can to rotate them around. Lukasz is definitely one for the future, lets hope he comes good.

‘What about Poom?’ I hear you ask. Well he’s moved to Watford. With our new signing it was going to take some sort of a miracle for Mart to find his way into the team. At Vicarage road he should be able to secure some first team football with the remaining few years of his contract. I say good luck to him, he hasn’t really been called upon here but I doubt he ever really expected to be. I believe he never let in a goal for us, which is quite good going.

Last year Wenger had Almunia playing in the domestic cup competitions, and Lehmann in the League and Europe. I think this coming season he’ll have to try something similar. This is almost certainly Jens’ last year here; I think he’s on the decline. So this season is the opportunity for Fabianski and Almunia to fight it out, and for one of them to establish himself as Lehmann’s successor.

flamini

Another player who looks to be leaving is Mathieu Flamini. He’s been talking about his lack of games, particularly in finals. He says he would play most of the games on the way to the final, then be snubbed for the final game. He’s a good player; just I think there are better ones than him here now. I will be sad to see him go but I think it’s best for both him and us that he moves on.

Thanks for reading.

Lets hope Woo-Kash rises to the top of the pile a la Cech. Wenger was interested in Cech before he went to France but choose not to sign him. We all know what happened there. So this looks like he doesnt want to make the same mistake again and let Fabianski slip through the net. He certainly has a lot of potential and although it is the polish league he has 2 full seasons under his belt as first choice between the sticks, so that experience has got to count for something. I would be delighted that by the end of the season he has made the position his own for the next 10 years. Which is what we need, a long term solid keeper.

As for Flamini, well i think he shot himself in the foot by saying he wanted to only play midfield. His best attribute is this ability to play in a number of positions (without ever excelling in one, to make him undroppable) and when he said that he talked himself out of a place in the team. He was never going to be first choice in midfield but he would have provided good cover in any position. I can see how he might feel thats not good enuff for him but thats the way its going to be at the Arsenal . And now with Diaby and Denilson, who have move a defined positions and are of greater ability in midfield he has seen his place in the squad usurped. He would probably make a great player for a midtable team, or back in france. Good lock to the lad i say because he has always given his best for us when called upon.

the reason why cech did not sign for us was due to a work permit issue. by the time he could have joined us lehmann was the established number 1.

If I were the manager of Reading or a team like that, I would totally buy flamini for a couple million. His work-rate fits perfectly into a mid-table team. It’s sad to see him go, since he’s the sort of work-horse that this team is missing, but he just didn’t have that extra touch of quality. We’ll see how denilson pans out, but it’s already obvious that his passes are more incisive that the Flamster.

A 19 yr old brazilian. A 21 yr old Polish keeper. That’s arsenal’s disadvantage right now. We have to buy players and hope they’ll turn out good. Wenger obviously thought Flams would take a step up in quality but he didn’t. On all these blogs, i read comments about how we lack someone with drive like Essien, but Chelsea were able to buy him at 25, when it was already obvious how good he was. And that’s why he cost a pretty penny.

We just have to hope that Wenger has guessed right with this young team. Which young mid-fielder is going to step up next year? Diaby? Denilson? Song even? I really can’t say I know.
