La Liga finished, Thierry needs to decide 18 June, 2007

Last night the Spanish season came to an exiting close with Real Madrid winning the title. Their 3-1 win over Mallorca was enough to beat Barcelona to the championship. Real came from a goal down to go two up in a 15 minute period of the second half, one own goal and two from our own Jose Reyes. Those goals will surely up his price tag this summer but it won’t convince Wenger to keep him; I’m sure he’d like to but Jose wants to play in Spain and he will, I expect his move to be sorted in a few weeks.

It was lovely seeing Barcelona cry after Paris last year but I’m sure they will want to bounce back stronger than ever and the will look to strengthen their squad this summer…possibly with Thierry Henry. Now the season’s over we can expect something to happen, if anything will at all. I’m in two minds about Henry, his recent quotes have been very confusing but I’m reassured by the knowing the tabloids will have twisted his words to the infinite degree to make them sound like he’s moving.

You see the thing is I know Thierry loves(/loved) Arsenal and has said not so long ago he wants to carry on playing at Ashburton Grove, but the things he’s been hinting recently have not been something to smile about. Also speculation from elsewhere is not helping; such as Giuly saying Henry hasn’t contacted him and the board saying it’s up to Wenger. I don’t think it’s really up to Arsene anymore; this is solely Thierry’s decision.

Well whatever happens I’d like it to be resolved quickly. I’m praying he stays, if he leaves it could cause knock-on effects for the rest of the squad and maybe he wouldn’t be the only high profile name to look towards the exit. It’s tough times for an Arsenal fan and I don’t blame you not wanting to read about it, I don’t really want to write about it. All I know is I love Arsenal and I’ll be there however we come through these next few years.

Patrick Vieira is also pretty worried at Arsenal’s state of affairs. Pat can relate to the current players and particularly Thierry Henry with the position he’s in. Here’s what he said:

“It is a difficult time for Arsenal because the players need to know what’s going to happen. “Arsenal are going through a difficult period – so many things have happened in the last few days. David Dein has left and, whether you like him or not, he has been a fantastic servant for the club. One has gone now so the base is not as strong as it used to be. All the speculation affects the team. Players need to know who’s going to be the manager, which players are coming and which are going. If Arsenal do lose Thierry Henry it will be a big blow for the club and for the players who stay there.”

He’s mentioned David Dein again, a name that seems to be coming up a lot. I knew he got on well inside Arsenal but I never knew he was such a key man at the club. It seems the ex-vice-chairman had an extremely good relationship with the players and manager and his departure might be a very bad thing for us. At the time I wasn’t really bothered…didn’t really think it would mean a lot.

That’s all the news there really is at the moment. I expect there to be some more in the week…hopefully it’s good news.

the big problem at the moment is wenger, if he is not committed beyond next year (which he is perfectly entitled not to be as he never breaks his contracts) then the bigger players will be reconsidering their future and it obviously makes it that much harder to sign new players. If wenger said i am staying, this whole dein BS would also die down. in my opinion if wenger does not commit soon, they should consider letting him go and start a fresh. managers who are not committed to their club and are lame ducks are often let go as where is the players motivation, especially with most of our players who are all besoted by him and not arsenal football club. Clearly what I have written will never happen and lots of people will call me an idiot, however i do believe, the board are too weak and wenger is too powerful and in many ways I think that is what vieira was saying, there is currently no leadership at the club and all our eggs are in the wenger basket, who himself seems unsure of his future. it is all very worrying.

vieira is one to talk considering he play at inter. the most dysfunctional club in the world

3. hus - 18 June, 2007

Seriously I am not worried. If Henry goes, he goes. Wenger would only allow him to leave if he has a ready made replacement(Or as near as is possible…Eto’o?)

The new stadium factor accounted for 11-12 points dropped this year, this should hopefully disappear next season. Terrible injuries also cost us at least another 8-10 points. Get everyone fit, keep/replace Henry plus add 2/3 quality players not necessariily big names and we will challenge.

just when i was trying hard to keep a bold face and belief that all will be well. you came along and reminded me that i do think about what is going to happen next. i long to hear some good news from r club. and in such times you would think if the club needed my little money then they would care to give me info worth that money and support i always give.
well, what can i do? keep going thru the blogs hoping to hear from someone that that the days ahead will be better.
IT WILL. COS I BELIEVE SO.

5. Dan - 18 June, 2007

TH shouldn’t be deciding, Arsenal should be deciding what is going to happen. which is what happened with vieira, the comment that we will not sell him unless we have a replacement i think could be wrong, we sold vieira and was told to trust wenger, and that trust was misplaced as he never brought in a replacement and that started where we are at today.

as much as Pat is an Arsenal legend, I think he’s conveniently forgetting all the grief gooners had to endure for five summers when every continental club (and ManUre) were rumoured to be after his signature. Now, Bobby Pires is another matter, an Arsenal legend, too, but he ought to keep his trap shut about Tel and Fab coming to play in Spain. To be honest, if he goes, he goes, and I couldn’t give a monkey’s anymore. well, I could, but you know what I mean, the media jumping on every utterance from Tel and his uncle Tomas LaCobley. I don’t think Eto’o will come here; I hope it’s Arsene telling Barca to put their money where their considerable gobs are, or shut the phuq up and leave our players alone. Or, I could be completely mistaken.

7. Danny - 18 June, 2007

We have the best young players the best manager, we play the best football, if TH stay the best player , if he goes we WILL replace him with someone not far short of his talent Wenger said he will be here next year have yuo ever heard him say a statement like that before and be wrong don’t panic !! we WILL be there next year for the BIG ones trust Arsene

8. Pips - 18 June, 2007

About reyes, wenger has said that he would welcome reyes back (and so would I) because we need a wide player on the left becayse since bobby and reyes have left we’ve not properly addressed that area. But since Reyes hates it in England there’s no chance of him returning.

As for TH I hope he decides one way or the other soon, because we don’t want to be left in a situation where if he does leave we don’t have time to find a replacement, now that would be TH screwing us over, bit like what happened when Pat left us. Thankfully then we had Cesc who stepped up, but if TH leaves then we have to get a replacement – Eto o Torres

9. ds - 18 June, 2007

if wenger leaves then i think we need a young coach that also has some exoerience in the higher levells of management. I think it should be Van Basten.

to all arsenal fans, i think all will be well next season, i trust arsene wenger and any decision he makes will be the best for the club

Henry is not leaving Arsenal. Next!

12. Magneto - 18 June, 2007

When Keith Edelman said recently that the Board wouldn’t decide
about TH14, and that it was a matter for Arsene Wenger, he was
simply re-stating what has always been the case since Arsene has
been the manager.

Namely, that Arsene has complete control over footballing matters at the club, including whether it’s time to release a player – for whatever reason – or not.

The point is, Arsene has that power over all of the current Arsenal players, and not just TH14. But the press chose not to write about that – wouldn’t make a good angle/story would it?

13. arsenalist - 18 June, 2007

If Arsenal wouldn’t had made it all the way to the CL final last year Henry would’ve left in the summer. The CL was our saving grace last year and pulled Henry back towards Arsenal and maybe gave him some hope about what the squad can achieve. But this year there’s nothing of the sort that is attractive about Arsenal (at least for him) and thats why I’m thinking he’s going to leave.

14. ArseNole - 18 June, 2007

I think Wenger leaving would be devastating. It’ll be hard to bring in the players we need, especially the young ones who all love Wenger teaching them. He needs to decided soon, as well as Titi, what their futures are.

stop perpetuating this bullshit about wenger not committing, he is doing nothing more than what he does with every contract.

every other time, he has finished his contract and then sat down and negotiated for a new one. one time he was out of contract totally for a while while organising it. this is just media hype and you should know it already

17. Charlie - 19 June, 2007

I feel that the Board should be commended for allowing Wenger to decide on allmatters relating to football, which is not the case in most clubs, where the owners, board, hangers-on etc have their say ( most times in public). This goes on to show that the Board have trust in Wenger and wants him to stay.
I think that Henri will not be allowed to leave this season. We do not have a ready made replacement, yet. I know alot of people have drawn parallel the Henri’s situation with what happen to Viera. If one were to analyse Viera’s transfer saga, he was only allowed to leave when his young apprentice proved that he could out do his master.
I hope that Wenger spend some money in acquiring a good winger- that will complete the team.

18. Arsenik - 19 June, 2007

If Henry really leaves it will be a big loss for Arsenal. But everyone has to look after themselves!

19. Waninda - 19 June, 2007

It’s quite difficult that Arsenal finds itself in this kind of situation. At the time when we finished 4th for the second season running, it’s high time the team settled. Wenger is supposed to keep his best players and Henry is one of them. He needs the experience to support him and Wenger should now be looking for the right people. We surely need big names too! The kids are pretty good but they need more time to mature. But of course right now the decision for Henry to leave rests entirely on him, he is mature enough but i would rather he stays. The future looks bright and am the championship title this time is heading to AshBurton Groove. Look out for this page when that time comes!!!

20. Chico - 19 June, 2007

I hate to be a doom and gloom merchant but the good old days are gone. It’s not the same being an Arsenal fan anymore. Seems like we are almost back to the days under Bruce Rioch. Adios Fabregas, Henry, Reyes, Lehmann. It was nice knowing you. Thanks for the memories. We are now an average North London team.

21. qwertymugg - 19 June, 2007

i don’t really think henry is good. as you see… hes getting old. he is way past his prime, he is like so gone.

22. Pete - 19 June, 2007

20 – Chico, you’re kidding right? Without spending anywhere near as much as the other top four we have a collection of some of the most exciting young talent in the world. People seem to miss that this team will improve without signings, but five years ago, the kids we had outside the first team were nothing of the quality we have now.

The future is still bright, don’t worry.

23. ArseNole - 19 June, 2007

I agree that we have a bunch of young talent, but we’ve kindof seen how all that works out. If we work up their potential and make them into star players like Fabregas, then other teams are just going to come in and pay a bunch for them. I think once we finally get over paying for this new stadium we’ll be back to normal and the housing development we’re building at highbury square will help to. It’s just a tough time for us right now in the transfer window

24. Pete - 19 June, 2007

I see what you mean, and I by no means think we’re in a really happy place at the moment, but we’ve got a much better foundation that we did five years ago, and perhaps that means in five more years time we won’t rely so heavily on one or two players – that’s why we get hit hard by this speculation, because one or two players leaving would cripple us more than teams that are more balanced.

25. Passenal - 19 June, 2007

With fans like you Chico, who needs enemies? Have a bit of faith and belief in your team. People who aren’t Arsenal fans can see what a promising and talented team we have, why can’t you? The team needs our support – so it might not happen next season, but it’s so close you can feel it – patience is a virtue well worth cultivating.
