Eduardo Da Silva – Henry’s replacement? 2 July, 2007
Posted by lasagnechef in Transfers.trackback

Well I said a signing this week would be nice to see and Wenger has made one. We’ve got Eduardo da Silva from Dinamo Zagreb, the scorer of the first goal in the game at Ashburton Grove between the two sides.
The 24-year-old was born in Brazil but moved to Croatia as a teenager and has made 12 appearances for the Croatians, scoring 7 goals including this header against England.
He’s been signed for £16m so he is pretty much Henry’s replacement. Although I have technically seen him play twice (and might I add he scored both times I’ve seen him), I can’t really judge him at this point. He’s not going to be as good as Henry was straight away, but I think we must give this guy time. It might even take a season or two for him to really prove himself; he’s only 24 so he can afford to take his time to adapt.
I’m really exited about seeing him in action for us. That list of possible signings I gave you last week were all pretty well known names and we would’ve known what to expect from one of those strikers if they were to sign, but this guy is quite unknown. All the stats seem good on him though, 7 in 12 for Croatia, he scored 34 goals in 32 games last season which is fucking impressive and totalled 71 in exactly 100 games at Dinamo. As I say I’m very exited about seeing him in action and I’m not going to judge him at all at this early stage. £16m seems a hell of a lot of money for him so he must be good. I trust that Arsene has made a good choice.
I’ll talk more about our new signing as I see him play and hopefully he’ll feature against Barnet in a couple of weeks. As one striker joins the club, another one leaves; Arturo Lupoli has gone to Fiorentina. You can’t say we weren’t expecting that though, we all knew he was off. He formed a good partnership with Bendtner in the reserves but it seems Arturo was going to step up to the next level like Nicklas now has. He’s seen out his Arsenal contract and now I wish him the best of luck in Serie A.
So quite a busy Monday then. Thanks for reading.
Edit: I’ve been informed on the comments that there was a confusion in the fee and it’s actually something nearer £5m-£8m. Much better

all that 16m gossip has come from one single source, the UEFA website with its dodgy translation from Croation to English. I am not convinced the fee is 16m. various other blogs have got croatian fans on there saying it was around £5m. Arsenal wont reveal what it is but it might become clearer over the coming days when someone at dynamo zagreb is asked about the phantom 16m fee!
According to BBC radio, Dinamo Zagreb have stated that the fee was €10m (£7m). Something got lost in the translation from the president of Zagreb. Sky Sports reported 16mil sterling but then changed it to around 8 mil
About the player himself – he looks like a real poacher. Has a good bit of pace and strength and while not looking all that tall he seems to get a fair number of goals with his head. I remember seeing the one he got against Italy for Croatia recently, stuck it away with his head from a deep cross. Lets hope he settles quickly and becomes an instant hit. Dudu9
Good signing
well this morning i was happy that we signed da silva..but i must say since then his comments have made me think otherwise..its a good thing he didnt sign 4 the originally quoted 24 million euro’s, however with regards to his comments about the transfer, he placed arsenal firmly last when he said it’s everyone’s dream to play for real madrid, barcelona, manchester united, (AND then) arsenal. Furthermore he stated that he will go back to croatia and play for dinamo zagreb again. i dont know how some1 who’s just signed for arsenal can say that. As far as his ability i’m sure he can score goals in the prem. he clearly seems to know how to finish and his record is 2nd to none. but i have to be honest most of his goal’s i’ve seen – are penalties. I still wish him good luck and hope he does well for us. I also hope the signing’s of sagna and davies r quickly resolved so we can start the season ready to go.
Rock, I think what he means with Zagreb is that he’ll be back to visit, or coach when he has finished playing.
But the Real Madrid, Barca and Man U thing surprised me a bit, seems another one who may do well then scarper, after all he DID break his 10-year Dinamo Zagreb deal to come to us…
He looks like a good finisher from what I’ve seen. I wish him well and hope he scores lots of goals for us. Apparently he signed a 10 yr deal with Zagreb in April, and two months later he joins us which is a bit of a concern.
i don’t think him coming to arsenal after signing a new deal wit Dinamo is any concern at all, he has simply taken a great offer from a super club . I am myself croatian and am thrilled to see a croat amongst the arsenal ranks, cant wait to get his jersey
Last season we created loads of opportunities but failed to convert them. This lad has an awsome record in front of goal and must know that with the amount of opportunities that will come his way and with Wengers coaching, he will be a hit. I know he has played in Croatia and that it is not the same standard as the Premiership, but look at some of the players who have left Croatia to come to europe – how many of them have been a flop? Rock said that most of the goals he has seen have been penalties, so what, look at Alan Shearer. Only time will tell. Bring on the next one Wenger
hell you cant blame the lad for changing clubs. His earnings would be enormously better. He apparently struggled through on 15,000 for quite afew seasons, so you cant blame him for wanting to provide for his future. And the order in which he quotes clubs is no suprise. That IS the reality in which the world see’s things. He isnt an Arsenal supporter, he’s a professional footballer. An article I read earlier talked about all the obstacles he overcame to be successful in Croatia and I take my hat off to him. As long as he ends up an Arsenal supporter in July I will be happy!! God bless him.
well that’s the striker situation out the way, time for sagna and a cente half to pen theyre respective deals and i believe we’ll be firing come the start of next season. with sagna/hoyte at rightback eboue will be able 2 play his trade further up the field on the right wing which is perfect because hleb has erratic performances in him + eboue’s defending is incredibly poor and wenger the genius recognises this. the left wing will be interesting as freddie surely must go he’s just loving life with his 50k a week salary and has been incredibly poor for the last 2 seasons so i’d have to say rosicky and either walcott or van persie to be occupying the left flank. I think bendtner will shine and so will walcott playin upfront. Future looks better n soon will look much better when sagna and mr “centre back” come in and sure up the defence. with them, all the other lads who would have gained valuable experience from last year, along with our new poacher..we should be all set to mount a serious title challenge. here’s hoping. Come On You Gunner’s.
i still have a feeling that we’ll bring anelka in. de silva is a left-footer, so can be blooded on the wings for width. then he can be shifter up to striker when we need him.
I just feel like wenger doesn’t want to splash big cash on a pure left winger because he knows carlos vela is coming in in january or at teh most, next season.
eboue will move up to right wing giving us options for width.
as for freddie, I don’t think wenger is too bothered. if someone is willing to take him off our hand, sure. but I also think that wenger wants a few old hands in the squad to to provide some continuity.
let the season begin.

ive a feeling this guy’s gonna flop big time. Just a feeling time will tell
Eduardo Da Silva…. Just saw some of his goals in the Internet and he looks like a fine finisher (always to the side of the goalkeeper). I am sure that if he plays he will score goals, no question. Will be more productive than Baptista, that is for sure.
However he is note the kind of player I was waiting for. I am still expecting to get Martins (with Da Silva as a replacement during the African Cup).
Wenger, let the good news come to us.
Rick
da silva is never going to be a winger his qualities lie as a striker, finishing, last year we couldnt finish, so it’s pretty clear he will be aq striker. get davies in!!
Give him the no.9 i say, hopefully he can break the ‘curse’ that’s been running with that shirt since the real Alan Smith retired:
Merse – left almost as soon as Wenger came in
Suker – his first and last touches/games were missed penalties (Liverpool away and Galatasaray in UEFA Cup final)
Jeffers – fox in the box my Arse
Reyes – started poor, got better, was awesome for 6weeks, then the Neville brothers went to lunch on him
Baptista – he was so bad that at the Lane he ‘tried’ a stepover in the corner beneath us, and we actually cheered how much of a bumbling oaf he was (bear in mind we’d just gone 2-1 up, so we were gonna cheer anything…)
so what about him sayin arsenal last lampard was on about great manages that helped the prem he said wenger then mourinho does that mean he wants to link up with wenger no it doesnt. when a player says he wants to stay somewhere for life they then leave henry left vanistelroy left they said they want to stay and arsenal and manchester united for life so its like a bad omen
da silva will be a hit mark my words. He’s exactly what we’ve been missing, a good goal picker because i can’t bare seeing all those sitters missed once again in the upcoming season
He came out of nowhere really. I was about to bet my house on us getting Anelka or Tevez. Typical AW out-of-the-blue signing.
CroGunner, I hope you’re right about being a hit. He definitely has the talent to become a success. It’d be interesting to see him and RVP who are both left-footed play together.
vaz te, i want vaz te!
He is the TYPE of player we need, whether he has the quality we will see. He doesn’t appear to be the human highlight reel like Henry, but we don’t really need a creator of goals, we need a finisher & most of his were were within 6 – 12 yards, often from crosses. If he is to continue to play the way he has for Zagreb, we need someone who can get to the byline and cross in for him.
Of his 34 goals in 32 games last year he scored 8 out of 8 from penalties which is an excellent return. Cool and clinical.
I think AW will sign at least another attacking player, probably a couple of them (plus a couple of defensive). Henry, Baptista, Aliadiere gone and only Dudu in. We lacked attacking depth already before those players left so I still wouldn’t be surprised with another striker in the 8-10 million range & maybe a winger who can cross.
and why doesn’t anybody see the need for goal keeper cover? lehman is horrible with crosses and is inadequate as a defensive leader. Everything falls on toure’s back. a good gk must have good control of his area, something it is clear lehman lacks especially when seeing him against bolton. apart from his champion’s league spill vs juventus, i think bremen’s tim wiese would be a great young replacement with experience.
According to Talksport, De Silva’s favourite food is a mans penis
Guys just relax… Dudu is top player… he can do wonders… he is little, fast, and i bet he will score. I am from Zagreb and i say that this is a top executor… I just hope Arsenal will made him even better.. he needs big games… And of course i cant wait to see him than play for Croatia…. Go Dudu….
big games he will get, but I hope he wont inherit the arsenal curse of trying to walk the ball into the net. we need someone who knows that its better to send the ball to the net at supersonic speed.
If he can produce similar stats to those he created in croatia i’ll be more than happy.
We’ve already bought that Polish keeper as cover u freak. and lehman is an excellent keeper
Sixty, that polish guys only got one arm though. He lost his left arm up a mans fatty fatty bum bum
Hey Blog Head why dont u try add somethin a bit more poductive to the conversation. rather than try act out ur own weird sexual fantasies on a forum page about Eduardo da Silva.
Sixty I thought you loved me, I aint bumming you know more, boyakka
I said it before. With the production of our midfield any good striker would make lots of goals. Based on what I have seen in the Internet, this fella can score goals with a fine finish. He could be a lot better than Baptista and Adebayor. He is also a superb penalty kicker. If he is going to play he will score goals (in the 15-20 range) will not miss him due to to the African Cup, which is a plus.
However I thought that Martins was a sure thing for Arsenal but we will have to wait and see what happens at the end.
Good news to begin the week. Buenas noticias cañoneros.
Rick
Rick, Stop writing stupid posts, your nose is huge and your legs are stumpy
Blog Head, how sad should be to live your life….
Rick
Blog Head is a Spurs fan. Don’t pay him any attention. But honestly, I find his comments hilarious.
“According to Talksport, De Silva’s favourite food is a mans penis”
lololol…
apparently wenger still in for martins…interesting..
Hm Martins is very good but i think Eduardo is what Arsenal really needs… a player that just take a ball and score… nothing less nothing more… take-score….
and he can do it…
I think that da silva should play in the left wing, rosicky right and wenger buys martins to partner RVP upfront. Adebayor is good as a sub! And trust me those chelsea and manyoo guyz wont even know what hit them. (I left out spurs intentionally. Tose guys arent even worthy to be called our rivals, oh liverpool too)
Erique, I think that your a liar liar pants on fire and I never want to see you again you bastard. Only joking are we still on for lunch today yeah? Its my turn to pay and its your turn to climb under the table and suck my nuts while I eat my knickerblocker glory, oooooohhhhhh the smell of it
well my tevez to arsenal dream seems to be over, manchester utd have snapped him up and i have 2 hand it 2 them they are doing incredible business…this eduardo excitement is all good but tevez – proven premiership talent to manchester utd..it a blow to us as far as im concerned, a huge blow..he was the player we needed in terms of fighting on those rainy days, battling away against the likes of man city n blackburn n bolton on those nights..which is what wenger wans and admitted tevez would be ideal for just that..eduardo is not 1 of those players, he will sit in the box waiting 4 a chances and though that is what was needed, i was hoping tevez would arrive too so i never thought i’d say this, but i really want martins at the emirates next season cause we need bite upfront badly bacause upfront theres no explosiveness, there is quality, but we need explosive pace and power n will to win. i dunno about many gooners here wanting to finish 4th but i want us 2 win the title. all we need is the right players.
They aint signed him yet Rock and if this makes any difference Tevez has denied contact with manu ! Were we ever in the running for him anyway ? Only Wenger knows…..
Guys mark my words… Dudu is great player… he will not wait… actually he will provide more than other players i tell you… he is not selfish and he play like he is part of team and not individual…. like i said wait and you will see
i think adbayor, baptista r just shit iin arsenal &ljunbergt, we hv 2 gt rid of dem
Now we only need strenth forward so Wenger should go for the Martins, this coming time not for the juniors we dont need shows we need actions.
i think eduardo is agood player and can help arsenal i agree with u adebayor full of shit ,this session v.persie will shine like a star
RVP & EDuardo up front for me.
What a natural predator he is , and one damn fine header of the ball for his size.
Im sorry but Adebayor just looks poo in comparison , in terms of movement and positioning
I think Ade has to be back up this season
“Dudu”!!!!
