Wenger speaks about Director of Football & more 17 July, 2007
Posted by lasagnechef in Arsenal News, Transfers.trackback

This article on Arsenal.com featuring a not so flattering photograph of Arsene explains why we still haven’t replaced David Dein. His departure has really unsettled the club and it’s down to Arsene to find a suitable replacement. Arsene explains that director Ken Friar has been helping him out with transfers at the moment as a stand-in but someone needs to be found soon. Here’s what Arsene said about the situation:
“I wanted to do it before the end of the season when I started buying and selling. But then I thought that now is the worst time because I have no time to tell someone how I want to do things. I did not want to unsettle the team before the end of the transfer market. So at the moment I work with Ken Friar and it is working well for us.”
So maybe we’ll have to wait until September to see a new Director of Football at Arsenal but I’d rather Arsene takes his time appointing the right man than rushing into a decision.
There’s a long piece from Arsene on last season, the new stadium and that sort of stuff here which is quite interesting. He’s also said we’ll all get a chance to see our new signings in action in the Emirates Cup. Also Arsene has told us not to compare Eduardo with Henry. The striker was signed not long after Thierry’s departure so it’s easy to try and draw a comparison. Here’s what Wenger has told us to expect from our new forward:
“Eduardo is a completely different player (to Henry), he is less individual. Thierry Henry could take ball in the middle of park and score a goal that no one else in the world could score. Eduardo is more of a mobile guy around the box with a nose for a goal. He is more a team player but he does not have the individual potential that Thierry had to score from anywhere.”
Not very uplifting words there in my opinion. We all know how incredible Thierry’s talent is was, and Arsene has basically said that Da Silva isn’t as good as him…he’s more of a player that knows where the back of the net is when needed. To be fair though, that’s exactly the sort of player we needed in most games last season, however after seeing him on Saturday, he doesn’t look very built up and we’ll have to see if he’s got the strength for the Premier League.
If you saw Arsene’s interview after the Barnet game, he was asked about whether he’d be signing a new contract. He didn’t say ‘yes’ or ‘no’ but it did sound quite promising. Anyway, Hill-Wood is hoping he will extend his contract.
That’s enough for today. See ya.

nothing coming out of wenger has been very inspirational quite frankly, his comments about TH seem to suggest he didn’t want him to go, so much for all the analysis he did on TH to see how he was finished etc. as for new players looks like we will not be seeing much action, if SWP goes to spurs more questions need to be asked in my mind. again not sure why he is choosing the director of football, why not the board, doesn’t the director of football act as the go between for the manager and board and yet this person will be wengers yes man. very strange. i still can not beleive that wenger thinks this current squad is good enough to compete for the championship, other than them being 3 months older, what has changed other than loosing more players than gaining, and your major compeptitors all seriously improving their squads.
You must be another Spurs supporter in disguise

certainly not a spurs supporter. when are people going to wake up and realize that the “arsene knows” blindly is no longer relevant. even the most red tinted glasses fans must have reservations about what the hell is going on there, what has happened in the past three years and what team we now have. this is why after three years og going backwards he still can do no wrong in people’s eyes, it is amazing the guy is a genius.
Dan may be just one of the doomsayers methinks. For them there is nothing good in what Arsene has done for the club. Buying big players does not on its own win titles. Perhaps Dan don’t know the recent history of Arsenal; Arsene don’t buy big but manages to do well, he’s on track to building a new winning team and we’ll see the results this season. Is not the money, the money is there but he does things his own way. Dan, don’t be disturbed by the power of Arsene, he’s always bought wisely and have done well for Arsenal both on and off the field that’s why the Board has ceded all football matters to him. He loves Arsenal and he’ll do things only to the benefit of Arsenal.
cecilia,
i am not a doomsayer, but a very concerned fan. First of all we are all appreciative and realize that he has transformed AFC. However football is a totally different game than it was 3 years ago let alone from when he started 10 years ago. Football is about money, if you can not see that then I am sorry i think you have no idea what you are talking about. Money does buy championships look at chelsea, it may not gaurantee them, but without it you have no chance. There are many clubs that now now have real money and are spending it and yes that creates demand and inflated prices that ideally we do not want to get involved in, however getting by on the cheap will not work anymore, just look at our last three years . The statistics shown recently about spending of the big clubs over the past few years and how ours is negative can only be seen in the context of the past three years results how we have totally lost chelsea and man utd and how spurs have caught up on us. I really think wenger is living in his own world where he can change the trend and show everyone how he can do it on the cheap and be the anti chelsea, however in my humble opinion he is kidding himself and taking us and the fans who pay a fortune to see what is becoming a more and more average team. This “Big players” argument is such crap, i and no one i think expects 30m signings, never going to happen. we have have spent decent money on players ie the 8 and above million, ie TH, Wiltord, Reyes, Helb, Walcott, Jeffers. I think he does love arsenal and wants to do what is best for them, but that does not mean he is infallible and should not be called to task especially when in footballing terms we are going backwards.
as for that squad above, there is average players everywhere you look.
Lehmann
Sagna Toure Gallas Clichy
Walcott GIlberto Fabregas Rosicky
Van Perise Eduardo/Adebayor
That is a top 2 side
Dan, grow up. Footy is a cyclical business. Teams grow together, achieve things, decline as age sets in, and hopefully renew. It’s unrealistic to expect a team to win EVERY YEAR (Didn’t the Harlem Globetrotters even lose a match to their hapless foes recently?) We were blessed with some geniuses in their prime (DB10/TH14/PV4/RP7) for many years, irreplaceable players. I don’t care how much cash we splashed to replace them, even if we bought Kaka, Ronaldinho, Eto’o and Riquelme at once it would have taken them time to bed in and gel as a unit. But the great thing is that our NEXT set of potential geniuses (RVP/Theo/Cesc/Diaby) are already within the club, developing nicely, and have been playing together for awhile now… with an even younger crop of potential geniuses (Vela/Merida/Barazite/Lansbury) lined up right behind them to push them on. We will be world-beaters soon, mark my words. We’ll win at least some silverware this year, and compete for the title. Just watch.
dan, too much doom and gloom.
money didn’t buy the prem for chelsea last year did it?
and money didn’t buy the prem for united in the late 90s early 00s when arsene pulled it off with a way smaller budget.
your belief that we need to buy does not guarantee a title. look at shevchenko and veron as being examples of that fact…
wenger is building something very special. and the ironic thing is that you will be saying ‘i knew it all along’ when they do something big.
magichat,
i agree that football is cyclical and we were blessed to have these amazing players at the same time. i certainly do not expect to win the league every year, like last year i think finishing fourth this year will be an accomplishment. where i disagree is that the players mentioned as potential geniuses may or may not be great players, it is still way too early to make that call about theo and diaby, the other two are great, (but who knows how long cesc will be around). the problem i see is that he has based our whole future based on this potential instead of creating a squad that is better balanced in age and experiance. he himself on several occasions blamed their lack of experiance and yet he has made the team even younger.
agreed lasagne chef with your side.
don’t agree with your point about wenger saying he’s not as good a player as the two-timer…
arsene is taking the pressure off the guy and the way i read it, he sees edu as a better player for the way the team play than henry was – i.e. someone who will not miss a chance and can finish rather than ponce about for ninety mins (th 2006/07).
everyone take a chill pill.
please.
I cannot let you get away with this Doooom mongering Dan. A ball has not been kicked but yet you are crying into your cornflakes. I am also a concerned fan (of 30 years), I had the piss ripped out of me at school in the mid 80′s for following the arse! I too would get excited at a multi million squid super star signing, but we all know that is not what AW does best. In fact, he does quite the opposite. Whilst all the speculation surrounding the TH replacement centred around direct and obvious solutions as a replacement, then bang, along came Da silva, noone spotted it, noone really knows if he can do it, not many had even heard of him, but I am looking forward with great trepidation to see this guy, because I have belief in what Arsene knows, which is a vast amount more than you and I and any of the knob head hacks at any of the media establishments. He leads them all on a merry little dance.
I do not wear any kind of tinted glasses, I have a good memory which I keep in mind when I pass judgement on any shortcomings that could be directed at Sir Wenger (he does have them, but these are far out weighed by the positives that he brings).
I feel immense gratitude that this guy has chosen my club to wave his magic hat over and I feel immense pride with the way in which his ethos and philosphies make my club into such a beacon of greatness (respect) within the football fraternity – within a time of corruption and wrong doing.
All I would ask any doom monger among the arse ‘support’ is this: Who would you get in to replace Sir AW. We will cope without TH (somehow – but lets face it, he was on the decline for us), but I would be very concerned if he decided that he wanted to leave – which he won’t be for the next 4 years at least!!!
As for that list of players being average, you want to take a long hard look at the other teams around us and compare technical ability. These ‘kids’ are special, if you don’t appreciate them, go and show your ‘appreciation’ somewhere else!!!!
Get behind the lads
Martin
darn tooting martin!!
Dan, You are panicking because a massive name has left Arsenal and he has not been replaced by another HUGE name. Stats show that the team’s performances (points gained) were better after Henry was injured and stopped playing last season. I have complete trust in AW and feel this will be a good season for us. I also feel there may be another signing on the way!
sorry guys, think I got a bit feisty there, but I do get narked with the doom mongering arse fans. With what AW is building we have so much to look forward to…no false dawns unlike what is in store for the t(r)otts!
I really can’t believe the crap that the fickle, ill informed doom mongering section of Arsenal fans come out with on this blog and others on the information superhighway.
It would be great if we could swop that particular section of Arsenal fans for some of the Liverpool supporters who really know how to get behind their team through thick & thin, and who appreciate talent on & off the pitch when they see it.
Well said Dan, these fools are nothing but blind followers, Arsene can simply do no wrong. Oh yeah, believing in Arsene is the mark of a true die-hard fan. Grow up and smell the coffee!
Guys
I Don’t think this is doom mongering, Dan has merely put across his OPINION on where we are. I agree with some of his points especially with regard to Experience, we have lost a lot of experience over the last few years and it has not been adequately replaced. This is especially true in Goals from Midfield (An area that still has not been fixed)
I agree that on Paper Lasagne Chefs starting 11 in post 8 could challenge for 2/3rd but they will not play every game and our Squad definately comes in behind Chelski and Man Ure and probably Liverpool, and we definately lack the goals from midfield to cement the position.
I am encouraged by Sagna and Eduardo but lets face it we have signed a Squad Player and a Gamble and Arsene does not know everytime (Jeffers to name one). I dont want to put Dudu down and his potential is definately there, but if I am completely honest, I would have preferred either Anelka, Martins or Mccarthy as it is as close to a 20 goal Guarantee as you are going to get, but that is my opinion and hey I am only Manager of Arsenal on Championship Manager.
We potentially have the best group of young players anywhere in the World, but they need time and unfortunately waiting for that time could cost us a Champions League place as currently our balance is wrong. I say currently as I still believe we will bring another couple of new faces which may rectify this problem of balance.
And to call him Fickle is a little out of order, he is showing some true feeling for the club and it is frustration not fickleness that causes him to post his thoughts, if he was Fickle he would be in JJB Sports getting a Torres Shirt. You almost seem to think and judge that only positive comments can be posted on a Blog. And I am sure that regardless of who turns out in the starting 11 Dan, Myself and all of you will support the Arsenal through thick and thin.
I ask everyone on this site, do you honestly believe that the squad as of today without additions will provide a prolonged challenge this year and if not do you accept that? I already have accepted it.
Dan & Derek,
What do you propose? Should we sack Wenger? Or better, let the chairman buy players à la Abromovitch?
The fact is Arsene Wenger is the manager and he will run the ship as he sees fit. I think we can give him a couple of seasons on the account of his somewhat succesful record, no? In May 2006, we were in the CL final and we have finished in the top 4 in the last three years so I don’t see where all the pessimism is coming from?
Do you seriously think we are going to win the title every year? If so, please buy FIFA 2007 and get some cheat codes that allows your club side to win World Cup, garanteed to score everytime you kick the ball from anywhere on the pitch…
Go Gunners!
Dan, you really talk out of your Arsenal don’t you? Those average players you talk of had the best head to head record of the top four last season. And yes, we do need to improve but there is ALWAYS room for improvement. We need to put away the dross when we get the chances instead of missing 4-5 gilt-edged oppertunities, start show-boating, concede a needless equalizer with 10mins left and then start playing again.
Eduardo should improve the goals to chances ratio. (Adebayor wont as he is and will remain rubbish). RVP will get 15-20 goals too and Bendtner will give us something different (a tall guy thats actually dangerous in the air!). I also think Rosicky (providing he plays more than 2 games in/5 out injured) and Walcott will contribute more to the goals column. Hleb will still be Hleb however and be completely infuriating. He gets into some great positions yet just will not shoot! And yet, he has shown that he CAN finish (Porto springs to mind). It will be very interesting to see if some players’ approach changes now that TH wont be shrugging his moody shoulders 20 yards behind the guy who has the ball. And Dan, thats been one of the problems for the past 2 years – THE CAPTAIN. It was an act of desperation by AW to keep him and it was a terrible choice.
I’m actually more optimistic about this team/season than in the previous 2 summers. And I reckon there will be more new faces to come. Arsene DOES know and there is plenty to look forward to.
Oh and Magneto, when you have finished swapping Gooners with thieving scousers will you love the atmosphere they create when they’ve stormed the turnstiles and you’re locked outside with a ticket in your hand? They have no respect for anyone, including their own…
After seeing Vela play 5 times now I can understand why Wenger is trying to get the work permit sorted asap. This player is top drawer and at only 18, he created half of teams gaols last year (23) and scored eightt.
I don’t agree with Martins or Anelka, Mccarthy would be a good buy but 10m for a 29 year old?. I think there’s one or 2 signings still to come, possible one big one(hopfully a winger and centre half)
Anyone seen di Maria? From what I’ve seen he looks pretty good, but again it would be buying potential. We do desperately need goals from midfield and yet we see the likes of Malouda, Ribery and Babel going elsewhere. Dont agree with SWP, Chelsea have chewed him up and s**t him back out. What about Fred from Lyon?
Steero, how does Vela play? Does his style remind you of anyone?
Hey everyone, insidearsenal are running a feature called ‘RIVALS – SPURS….’ Does anyone know if this is a Sun exclusive (just like ‘Wengers 15m Hot Rod’) or not?!!
I would go for Wright-Phillips, he does bring Goals and he has Premiership Experience.
I watched Di-Maria last night in the U-20 World Cup, he looks superb and now would be the time to snap him up b4 the others do.
Arsene did say after Barnet that he saw no reason to bring anyone else in. But I think that this comment is based on the fact that until he goes Reyes and Freddie are Arsenal Players, if one or both of them leave I am sure a quality player will come in.
Vela has pace to burn looks like a young stronger verion of Michael Owen but with a better touch and vision
LasagneChef – I’m not sure why you are interpreting Arsene’s comments in the way you have. He does not say Eduardo is not as good, but he is different. Maybe that is what the team needs? He will be in and around the box to put away the type of chances our players made last season. As for his ‘slight’ stature – the Croatian league looks fairly physical too and sometimes it’s brain rather than brawn that’s needed to outsmart the hackers.
patthegooner,
I would go for Martins (i know unlikely) over SWP. Martins would bring more goals, play on the left (somewhere we are short) and not stunt the growth of Walcott. Hleb will do that anyway…!
Freddie HAS to go. He should have gone 2 years ago. He has lost his pace and with Bergy gone, so are most of his chances.
I think we have to look at our performances last year.. if we just converted half the sitters that we missed we could well have been challenging for top spot. Just look at the West Ham game. SKY did a troll of the misses that we should have converted easily. I am not talking of half chances. Dead certs. Henry was absent all season. Even when he was playing. Other things on his mind.. wives for one thing. So we were without our two main strikers RVP and Henry. RVP was on fire when he got injured. It will be like signing a new player this season when he plays. If the mid field can produce the same performances and create the openings am convinced that we do have the fire power to convert all those chances that went begging last year. The defence leaked goals last year, With the new signing of Sagna.. a world class French defender to shore up those silly goals that we let in. Dan I hear what you are saying. I do think Wenger knows.. most of the time. However, there have been a few failures, Wiltord never lived up to his potential or Jeffers plus Boa Morte. But the ones he did bring in more than compensated. I for one would not like to see them become a Chelsea. Although I have a funny feeling they will not be first or second this year. So I am really looking forward to the season.. we do have the creativity.. all we need is the forwards to side foot the ball into the net..
BIGd,
head to head with the top four is irrelevant, all it shows is that on the day we are as good as anyone, which we all agree we are. what shows a championship winning contender is over 38 games and we have been a country mile away from that over the past two years full stop. i certainly do not think we are going to win the league every year, where i think AFC should be is at least in the mix, that has not been the case for the last few years and is unlikely to be again in the next few. what to do about that i do not know, i am not suggesting sacking wenger, equally i do not get this obsession that everything wenger does is right and great and how dare loyal paying arsenal supporters who have been fans long before he came and will be there long after wenger leaves show some form of concern that our team may not be heading in the right direction, when all the facts of the past few years seem to indicate that is the case. HOPEFULLY we will be fantastic and all live happily ever after winning lots of trophies. abuse of fans and calling them names because they do not agree with the “arsene knows” everything is ridiculus.
I would keep Freddie, but I feel that he has to re-negotiate his contract, 60-70k for a Squad player is a huge dent in the Wage allowance. Freddie has the experience and winning mentality that will hopefully pass down.
My only issue with Martins is the African Nations Cup, we will already lose Adebayor so we will be short
I would like SWP and a Striker that is not commited to the ANC. Given those two additions I think we could Gaurantee 4th and maybe push into the top 2.
The thing with Hleb is that he gives 110% but he seems to be a confidence player, as soon as he gets in the box, he freezes yet the skill that got him there in the 1st place is often sublime.
I agree Martins at 13m will e at Afican Cup and no-on eknows his true age (is he really 22).
pat, totally agree with you on Hleb, he is probably the best on the ball we have but we cant have players that freeze in the box. Take your point on Martins and the ANC but it does not bother me at all that Ade will be missing. Hopefully Bendtner could come in and take his place.
For the record Steero, Martins is 42, 6’5″ tall and from Iceland….
If Hleb could bang some in in Pre-Season, I think he could become the player we hoped for,
I wonder if the Henry affect had anything to do with it, I am not one to slate probably the best player ever to pull on the red and white, but he definately put pressure on some of the players as he constantly expected perfection and gave the death look to any player putting one in row z or misplacing a through ball
Rosicky will come on too, I expect him to bag at least 10 this season. I would still love to get someone in that would gaurantee the goals though.
I am fully confident about Arsenal right now, I know that this next season is going to be an exciting one.
Dudu is no Henry, that is well known and no surprise to anyone, and that is exactely what AW is saying… but is it possible that his style will produce the goals we missed last season ?
Is Martins or Etoo coming to the team ?
Rick
bigd – from your entry No 23
“We do desperately need goals from midfield and yet we see the likes of Malouda, Ribery and Babel going elsewhere.”
kind of what i and others have been saying? are these “big” signings? obviously we agree that they are the sort of players we need and are currently not buying, as wenger either thought they were not good enough or too expensive, either way would you rather have seen any of those three on the wings or our currents options?
would be nice to know if wenger tried to buy them and if not why not.
listen everyone arsene is the main man at arsenal and who ever he buys are gona be future greats, this team we have now is better than most teams in the country, trust arsene, i’d put money on us winning the league, i am that confident. ARSENAL ARE BIGGER THAN ANY PLAYER.
it was the finishing that let us down last season not the build up play, now we have DUDU we will defo be putting away more chances, it doesnt matter that he isn’t that much of a flair player coz we have van persie, rosicky, helb, fabregas, denilson, walcott who are flair players we needed a proper goal scorer and now we have it.
Denny
Love the Optimism, You are right no Player is bigger than Arsenal and I think that is partly why TH14 went.
unfortunately though some of our players class our manager as Bigger than Arsenal which is a problem
patthegoonr
i just think the players have confidence in arene, it’s because of him they are such great players, and i honestly think he will sign a new contract where else in the world would he have total control of a club, i also think he as told the players he is staying otherwise why asn’t fabregas left, the future is looking bright for arsenal fc i’m not worried at all
im with dan and pat.
Its about time arsenal fans on here stopped us realists stating our opinions, i admire your confidence and hope to god you are all correct with your upbeat views, but come on, we’ll be lucky to finish in the top 6!!!!
completely agree with Denny about no one being bigger than the club and with patthegooner that wenger now seems to be be seen as bigger than the club, i know i seem anti wenger but i certainly am not, but i do believe this whole arsene knows feeds in to and creates this image that wenger is god and is all what AFC stands for and if he left we would be left with nothing, which clearly complete crap because we will all still be there.
top 4 maybe
afc,
that is too pessimistic even for me!!!!!!! no one outside spuds will be good enough to finish top four. even if we start the year with what we have now i think we will keep 4th place, just about.
i am sure he will resign, he clearly has a long term goal to try and fulfill and as stated above he will have a job with such freedom as he has at us.
tell you what im getting fed up with………..waffle about arsene being “god”, “sir Arsene” etc etc, there was an arsenal before arsene and will be long after he goes. I think the man is being disrespectful to us fans just as thierry was and like fab has been with his comment about “if arsene goes then i go”, wheres there loyalty to the Arsenal fans and the team in general?
there is none, that is modern day football. all about money
its as if the fans dont exist when you listen to the manager and some players speak, we never get a mention although to be fair fab did say he was full of pride when he saw people with his name on their shirts, but that was after he had spoke to madrid. I wouldnt be surprised if wenger announces that he has signed a new contract on the friday before the season kicks off just to give the tam a boost, thats how it has happened with players, just before a big match.
arsene isn’t god and there will be life after him but he as built a platform for the next manager to build upon, this club will never finish out of the top 4 we wll only get better with the players we have
fair point denny,
worse case scenario then, who could possibly step into his boots without ruining what he has built?
i agree we need at least 1 player and thats left wing but we dont need it to be a big name, we need someone young who can learn from rosicky but still someone who would be ready to play if rosicky gets injured,
the future bright the futures arsenal
by the way what is the history on vela?
gaz the gooner
i think if wenger goes we should promote pat rice as manager or tony adams, pat rice because he knows the players and the way we play, and adams because he’s mr arsenal plus he would sort out how defence and make it more solid
vela is 18 and he plays abit like henry did hen he was younger but abit more direct,
will defo be world class
i do not agree with the statement we will never finish out of the top four, it will be a real battle with spuds this year, if we get some key injuries like last year and let’s face it, it happens every year who would have thought TH & RVP would miss half the season and we are big trouble.
If tony Adams was going to be in line, wouldnt he have been assisting AW already and Pat Rice? i have got a lot of time for pat but just can’t see it. I don’t trust the board to be so on the ball should anything disasterous happen.
1 player we will see alot of this season will be Nacer Barazite i’ve seen him alot in the reserves and he is a vey good player as we seen againest barnet and he’s still only 17,
we have that many great youngsters we could never finish below spuds
The view that we will never finish outside the top four is very optimistic however loyal you may be, we seem to have stood still over the past three years, progressed very slowly at best whilst the “big” teams seemed to have come on in leaps and bounds(however sickening that is to admit). Have we bit off more than we can chew or are we just punching above our weight? I shall now wait to be shouted down by those in blinkers!!
i have a feeling it will be arsene who will pick the new manager just like it’s up 2 him who will be the new directer of football, what ever happens arsenal fc can and will only get better with or without Wenger
the amount of money spent and players bought already this summer by the others is really astonishing and very scarey.
Its getting out of hand and that is our only saving grace long term, hopefully in two or three years time we will be in the box seat. The amount of money being spent is unsustainable. Perhaps it is time for us to be a bit more optimistic and rise to the challenge……….. COME ON YOU SUPER REDS!!!!!!
this young team of players have been playin together for 2years or more the only thing that was missing was putting the ball in the back of the net to round off our amazing build up play, but hopefully we have the player who will do that “DUDU” plus we have Vela who at 18 is better than henry was at that age so he can only get better.
we are underdogs this season which i prefer, the media and clubs don’t see us as contenders which is fine by me, all i’m sayingis don’t write us off
Beating fulham is getting harder by the week, all the players they are snapping up!!
……….and im in Egypt for the big kick off, is that an omen, fayed and all that??
where can i get some info on this vela fella?
whilst no one is shouting at us, my concern about these “youngsters” is that they are being over hyped, no doubt RVP, Cesc, Clichy are class, I think it is too early to say that of Diaby, Denislon, Bendtner, Walcott and Djouro, they simply have not played enough and showed enough for us to to know that they will be that good. I personally do not think, Eboue, Ade, Senderos, Flamini and Hoyte will never be great players are all bog standard average players. As for people talking about the next generation of Merida vela etc, they are just young kids who have never played in the league how on earth can people say that they are good enough to be in a top team playing in the premiership.
correct, i spend some afternoons on here watching in amazement as post after post sings the merits of eboue, ade et al, how great it would be if everyone was right and they do turn out to be world class but to rave about the possibility of eboue moving to the wing because we have purchased a nother right back misses the point, if eboue is so good then why didnt we just go out and buy a winger?
[...] Wenger speaks about Director of Football & more [image] This article on Arsenal.com featuring a not so flattering photograph of Arsene explains why we still […] [...]
Wenger who has a keen eye for stattistics, knows the number of chances we created and wasted last season, with or without Henri. Imagine where our team will be IF we had put away half of those chances. Top two at least. What does the BOSS do to correct the situation? He goes out to buy ht ebest poacher in the game. Some one who is not only a poacher but, one who can also integrate with our style of play. That man is Eduado. If he could put in a third of the chances the team created, he will be the top scorer in the league!!
Dan – Diaby, Denilson, Djourou, Walcott and Bendtner all seem to have done enough to earn full international recognition (Denilson was called up to Brazils squad recently).
Eboue, Flamini and Senderos (Senderos especially) get bad press on alot of sites, some like yourself, claim that they are not good enough for Arsenal – they were good enough to get us to the Champions League Final, breaking the record for clean sheets and time without conceding on the way (we played Real Madrid and Juventus that year).
Some players are more suited to certain games than others, I would like to see Senderos and Flamini play against the teams that play the physical card against us – they dont get bullied too easily and never shirk a challenge.
You are correct in saying that we have not seen how Vela and Merida will do against senior player in our league – you can only judge them against people thier own age group and in doing this you see that they are among the best out there. Merida (whom Athletico want on loan all season) has just won international championship with Spain (4 Arsenal players played in final) and Vela has earned rave reviews from managers and ex players where ever he has played.

But he earned rave reviews for sucking willy’s though. How him being good at sucking, blowing and licking will help your title challenge I dont know
Out of interest, where do you get your match pictures from?
