If he is I will eat my hat. Or a cake. I’ll eat something anyway but he won’t be captain. After last night’s game Arsene was questioned about why the new captain hasn’t been announced, here’s what he said:
“In every game you need a captain. William has all the ingredients needed to be a captain along with Kolo and Gilberto. He has a lot of experience. Also centre back is the best position to captain the team because you are in a position to see all the problems on the pitch. It is a better position than a centre forward or a wide player. But we go game by game right now. At the moment the captain problem is not the biggest one. The biggest problem is to be fit.”
There Wenger has explained why Gallas had the armband for the pointless pre-season game. Well not pointless but it didn’t mean anything. The reason Kolo was not captain is because he was brought in as a late replacement for Johan Djourou. Arsene would’ve told William some time before the game that he would be captain and I’m sure he was happy with that. However when it was decided that Kolo would play, Arsene couldn’t have exactly gone to Gallas, “Sorry mate, Kolo’s playing now. You aint captain anymore.” I don’t think Bill would’ve been best pleased.
So when Sky Sports News.com come out with this headline: Wenger: Gallas could be captain, it is absolute bollocks.
Yes Gallas does have the credentials to be a captain, but just because he captained a friendly it doesn’t mean he will be the new Arsenal captain. It will be Kolo or Gilberto as Arsene said in his interview.

Anyone who wears the armband should have red and white blood running through their veins.Gallas is NOT an Arsenal man.He made this clear by his comments.Could you imagine Tony Adams spouting the same shit about his beloved Arsenal ? Paddy was here for a few seasons before he was given the armband due to Captain Marvel (Adams) retiring For me Bert should be captain and Kolo vice. At the end of the day Bert is probably the best in the world in his position. Kolo fights for everything and always has a smile on his face but captain I’m not 100% on that part. Cesc I’m sorry to say is too young at the moment and I don’t think he needs that burden on his shoulders. The same would happen to him as it did Henry – take him off his game mentally and would suffer for it. Cesc hasn’t got the presence of Viera or Adams on the pitch. Got to be Gilbeto !!!! Unlike Henry, Freddie, Pires and Campbell he loves the club and respects Wenger enough to accept the gaffas decisions without looking to jump ship. No ego, no attitude just cool, calm commitment. He’s also raised his game over the last few seasons and has the respect of the younger guys.
Also gotta mention that i LOVE the attitude of the young guys in a sqaud. It has to be Toure for captain. I’m more inclined to have a defender be our skipper, so I would opt for Kolo who is 100% Arsenal, if you know what I mean.

I think Gallas has been a prik recently, but to get the absolute best out of him (and he is fkn good!) i think the armband would be the best thing. He’s the most experienced, has won trophies and would take it very very seriously!

It don`t matter a fuck who is captain. The real problem is that we are not good enough to challenge for the Premiership or the Champions League because we are FUCKING BROKE! Kolo or Gilberto really, i think it would make more sense to have Kolo as captain as i see Denilson and Diaby fighting over Gilberto’s place in the coming seasons. Toure is younger and in theory should have a longer career than Gilberto has he is in his 30′s. Basically don’t be suprised to see Gilberto replaced in midfield in a year or two times, so why make him captain? Though he proved himself as a class act as captain last season and behaved more of a captain than a certain dancing(not with the ball..) frenchman
I don’t know that Gilberto will be guaranteed his place this season and certainly won’t be available for the first couple of games. 34. DeeOzGooner makes some good points (you do know something about footie Down Under!). Making Gallas captain will improve his game. However like many other Gooners I’m not convinced about the Gallas/Toure partnership. For me that concern is only second to the lack of goals from midfield.

GIlberto is brilliant but he is too quiet. Gallas would be a disaster.Cesc should be a future captain but now he is too young. Kolo should definately be captain. He is outspoken, mature, energetic and a good leader

Gilberto did a fine job in Thierry’s absence last season. He seemed to get the guys going in the matches i saw him in. Yes, he may not be the most vocal of players, BUT his attitude and displays on the pitch last season did a lot of his talking for him. Plus, I would have thought that the whole of the squad respect him as a senior player; perhaps more so than Gallas, who needs to learn to keep his gob shut. If the extract from Wengers statement is true, it is finally admittance that he only gave the captaincy to Thierry to try and keep him at the club. Not sure that this should be a determining factor in bestowing such a honour on a player. So, to return to who should be captain, Gilberto is the man to lead Arsenal and I would have a loyal, committed, inspirational, never say die centre back as the vice captain….not Gallas but King Kolo! Then when Gilberto moves on, pass the captaincy to Kolo and vice captaincy to Cesc.
I live in hope of a fruitful 2007-2008 season. If we convert half the chances which were missed last year, we’ll be right up there in the mix. Expect midfield to contribute much more this year. I have put money on Cesc easily reaching double figures. COME ON THE MIGHTY GOONERS!!!!

Anyone ever heard of an african getting heat exhaustion before? Adebayor is out of this weekends tournament because the heat at our training camp has had a bad effect on him – you could not make this stuff up could you?
I am getting a bit worried now – less than 3 weeks until the new season kicks off and we have 3 players injured (well sort of) and our new striker has been knocked back for a work permit. Wenger has said that we have a squad of about 20 players, 3 players out and 1 who cant play for us yet, this leaves 16 players – the exact amount we need for each game, actually it means we will also be having 2 keepers on the bench.
If we dont bring in a player or 2 now Wenger will be shitting himself any time one of our player gets tackled incase they get injured. Its a good job we have the likes of Brady, Rice and Bould at the club as we are going to have to register them as players again.
A real view of arsenal chances this season
The 2 questions which really matters are:
1) Are we, position for position, stronger this year ?
2) Can we cope with injuries and the african cup?
1) If you look at the arrivals and departure, this arsenal team is a bit weaker than last year with the lost of Henry.
Whatever people said, you are kidding yourself if you believe that we are not losing one of the best player in the world ( Which player could fetch a fee of £16 millions at 30 and 2 seasons with plenty of injuries). Why do you think arsene wanted to keep him for 1 or 2 more seasons.
The arrival of Dudu, an unproven player in the premiership (even if he looked quiet good in youth tube and the friendly) and Bakary is not the kind of signing who will make a real difference (at least the first year). Which player in the premiership did really well the first year?
Dudu is probably a 10 or 15 goals player the first year which is about the same as a half fit henry.
On the positive side we are stronger because of the increase of premiership experience for the majority of our team and simply the fact that our young player are getting physicaly bigger (see clichy, fabregas etc…).
It is as well the third or fourth years that those young players play together and the team spirit, unity must be quiet strong now ( probably the hunger as well).
POSITION FOR POSITION WE ARE DEFINITLY NOT STRONGER THAN LAST YEAR BUT AS A UNIT WE PROBABLY ARE.
I think that unity will take us in the top 2 of the premiership .
Unity and experience is probably the most important over the all season (look at chelsea, liverpool or man u the last 4 seasons when they were all winner without big stars).
Chelsea didn’t win the moment they started to rely on Drogba, Man u won without Van Nis and Liverpool play as a unit.
2) I think this team is big enough to cope with injuries or the african cup. Obviously there is no much you can do when you lose your 2 main strikers ( arsenal or any others teams ). Does chelsea, liverpool or man u have better player on the bench ( with more experience maybe but better no). Are they better than Diaby, Denilson, Walcott, Bentner, Dudu (depend how you see the first 11 ) ?.
On the paper those players have as much experience in the premiership than theirs.
