Russian Bid & Champions League draw 31 August, 2007
Posted by lasagnechef in Arsenal News, Champions League.17 comments

Well yesterday Davis Dein sold his 15% percent share in Arsenal to Russian businessman Alisher Usmanov. He’s something like the 150th richest man in the world and has a box at Ashburton Grove. Usmanov has started a name, Red & White under which the shares have been bought and has named Dein as Chairman of it. Farhad Moshiri who is a business associate of Usmanov’s is also part of this Red & White group.
Their intentions are clear, they want to take over Arsenal, and David Dein believes their bid is the way forward for Arsenal. I’m not sure where this puts Stan Kroenke now, maybe he will continue to compete but it is likely that Red & White will make him an offer for his share.
Gilbertosilver and Arseblogger understand these sort of things a lot better than me so if you fancy finding out more and reading their opinions then definitely visit Gunnerblog and Arseblog.
I suppose if I want anyone to take over Arsenal I would want it to be someone with the best interests for Arsenal at heart and it seems (on the surface anyway) that this is the intention of Red & White. Dein has many times told us he’s loved this club since he was six, he’s done a great deal for us and put a lot of money and effort into Arsenal, but recently it seems he’s become a little focused on the takeover of Arsenal. Also, the man with the money, Alisher Usmanov is a keen follower of Arsenal and has a box at the Grove. The reality of life today is that everything is about money; however at least we have people here who might give a toss what happens to the club.
I’ll talk more on this once I properly understand what’s going on but that’s the basics of it, as I understand it.
Yesterday the Champions League group stages were selected. Below is the draw we got:
Group H:
Arsenal
Sevilla/AEK Athens
Steaua Bucharest
Slavia Prague
Seville and AEK play on Monday night but you have to expect the side from Spain to progress. I think it was a pretty good draw for us. Seville are a very good side but you have to think we are capable of finishing in the top two in Group H. Our first match is away at Steaua Bucharest on the 2nd October. You can see the rest of the draw here; Liverpool got Porto, Chelsea have Valencia and Man United go back to Roma where their fans were battered by Italian Police.
Right I’m off. Have a nice weekend everyone.

It was a pretty easy tie at the Grove and we eased through three-nil winners, and won the tie five-nil on aggregate. We played Sparta all over the park; we were just way to good for them even though some players were not at their best.
Hoyte did get that first start of the season and played a decent 90 minutes. Diaby started with Gilberto in the middle and I think had a great first game too. He looked very much like Vieira and was very cool and composed on the ball. Walcott started out on the right wing but didn’t look great there to be honest. He was making great runs and his pace was too much for Sparta but his final ball was sometimes poor; I think he had quite an inconsistent game to be honest.

Toward the end Denilson took over at right wing and Theo was pushed up front. He did look threatening again but he still wasn’t anything special. I’d just say we have to give him time. Da Silva started up front with Van Persie and the no.9 was getting his home debut. He looked quite anonymous at times in the game but I think that might be expected playing with Van Persie. When Walcott moved to striker partnering Adebayor (who came on for RVP), Da Silva moved to left wing where he looked impressive. That position and the tiring Sparta players allowed Eduardo the time he needed and from that position he set up one and scored one.
The first goal came in the 7th minute from Sparta old boy Rosicky. Walcott picked up the ball just right of the box and played a pall along the ground through the box and Thomas was running in to side-foot the ball in with power. I really simple yet effective goal at that really put us through to the Champions League group stages. Sparta needed to score three now and even though only 7 minutes had gone you could tell they weren’t strong enough to do it.
The rest of the first half went on as it started, Sparta never really got a chance with the ball and I think Almunia touched the ball about three times. We came close a few times; Van Persie nearly diverted the ball in the net when it came to him at the far post but the ball was hard to reach. Anyway at half time it was one-nil and very comfortable.
In the second half we seemed to lay off a little, I’m not sure whether Arsene told the boys to calm down now as the job was pretty much done but it did seem like it.

The second goal took until late in the game to come. The stadium was starting to empty at this stage so many sneaking off to beat the traffic missed Eduardo’s skill and Fabregas’ cool finish. Da Silva was fed the ball out of the left wing; he cut inside using his pace and rounded the defender by putting the ball one way and running round him the other. He then played a nice ball to Fabregas who was just on the edge of the box; he took a touch and shot. 2-0 Arsenal.
The game was finished of nicely 7 minutes later with Eduardo’s late home debut goal. Adebayor started the move off on the halfway line who passed to Cesc and continued his run. The ball went out wide to Denilson and then back to Ade who was now in the box, he played a one-two with Denilson who crossed in to Eduardo who was 5 yards from goal. I don’t know whether Da Silva doesn’t like to head to ball or not but he stretched out with his left foot and diverted the ball into the far corner. A difficult finish but credit should go to him for actually pulling it off.
So it was an easy win in the end and we’re through to the group stages. The draw for that is this evening. That should be interesting and I’ll have a word on that shortly. Until then.
Sparta Prague Preview 28 August, 2007

There really isn’t much news around this week, which is weird, and I haven’t got time to do a preview of our Champions League qualifier so it makes sense to write it now. Arsene’s pre-match press conference isn’t until later today, which is a bit annoying; we’re still waiting on the news of Sagna and Senderos’ injuries.
We troubled to beat Manchester City this weekend but Sparta warmed up for the game with a 4-1 win. They come to the Grove with nothing to lose; they are expected to be knocked out. 2 goals scored and they’re right back in it, so if we concede (which is likely) then we have to be extra careful. If we score then they need 3, but then 3 away goals would take them through. I don’t see us losing 3-1 though to be honest.
In goal we’ll have Almunia, I have complete confidence in Manuel and I don’t feel nervous because he’s our reserve ‘keeper. I hope the back four will be Sagna - Toure - Senderos - Clichy however Bac and Phil picked up slight knocks on Saturday. We’ve heard nothing to say they’ll be out for tomorrow night’s game but we’ve heard nothing to say they’ll be fit. That will be cleared up in today’s press conference.

If they are out then Gilberto will come in for Senderos as he did at the weekend. As for Sagna, well I’m not really sure on the news of Eboue’s injury, but if Emmanuel if fit then I’d say that he’d come in at right back. If he is still injured I guess Justin Hoyte will get his first game of the season.
Edit: Pictures of the players training today shows Senderos and Diaby in action so I’m guessing Big Phil will be back
In midfield I think Wenger will start with 5 with Hleb playing that advanced position behind Van Persie. That’s just a complete guess but with the 2-0 advantage and the fact that if we don’t concede we’re through it makes sense. On the right wing we can either go with Walcott or Flamini (or Eboue if he’s fit) and on the left I guess it’ll be Rosicky. Then in the middle I think Gilberto will start if he’s not needed in defence then he’d be along-side Fabregas, Flamini or Denilson. Then of course Van Persie up front.

There are a number of options Arsene can go with but it’s hard for me to pick a team when I haven’t heard Arsene’s press conference and I don’t know the fitness of some players.
I don’t think tomorrow night will cause any problems. There shouldn’t be a problem and we should make our way into the Champions League. However only if we do concentrate and do not underestimate them. Tickets are on general sale if you fancy going down but make sure you bring a scarf; RedAction and the club are asking people to bring scarf to our European fixtures, sounds good to me.
Right then, that’s enough for today. I’ll get a match report up either Wednesday night or Thursday. Until then.
Edit: Wenger’s had his press conference and Sagna’s out and Senderos is back:
“The injuries are Eboue, Gallas and Lehmann. Sagna is injured too with a kick in the back but he should return for Portsmouth on Sunday. Senderos is back in the squad.”
So I take it Diaby’s back? Maybe he’ll play some part. Also Arsene confirmed that Eboue is still out so I expect it will be Hotye to come in.
Arsenal 1-0 Man City - 25/08/07 - (Premier League) 26 August, 2007

So that’s two home wins in two and I call that a great start to the season. We very nearly went unbeaten at home last season and we’ll need to do something like that again to put the pressure on United, Chelsea and Liverpool. Hopefully this time with a few more wins and a few less draws.
It was pretty much the team I expected except Rosicky started ahead of Walcott and an injury before the game to Senderos meant a first appearance of the season for Gilberto who started at centre back. Adebayor was also making his first start of the season alongside Van Persie.
I’ve heard that Phil’s injury is not serious. But if he’s going to miss some game then we’re in serious injury trouble already. Also Sagna picked up an injury yesterday but it seems that’s not too bad either. However it is getting really worrying and I think if Wenger doesn’t make another signing then he’s really running a risk. The Djourou loan was not good for us but I’ve heard that Johann wanted first team football and forced the move to Birmingham.
The first half we were playing really well and had by far the more possession and attacks, the thing we were really lacking were shots to test the ‘keeper. The visitors went closest early on when a Toure error near the halfway line let a City player through. Clichy did well to try and get back but in the end the shot was poor and Almunia wasn’t troubled.
Manchester City’s shooting was consistently bad to be honest. They had a few shots in the first 45 but I don’t remember Almunia having to make a save.
10 minutes before half time we came inches away from opening the scoring. A ball was played along in front of the goal and Van Persie slid in at the far post but couldn’t quite reach it. It was a good first half of football, very enjoyable but I think it’s summed up best by the arsenal.com match report: “creating much, converting nothing”
The second half was a different story though. Man City came out the better side and we didn’t really look organised at all. Adebayor had a chance early on but it was all City for a long period after that. Almunia had to make a decent save to deny the visitors the lead. We just started to get back into the game though and our attacks were awarded with a penalty when Hleb was brought down in the area.

Hleb was getting round the left side of City’s defence and cutting in well but despite the screams of shoot he decided to try and make a difficult pass into the middle every time. It was very frustrating but at least he’d got a penalty from this attack. Despite Gilberto being back Van Persie placed the ball down for the spot kick. It was a poorly taken penalty, along the floor and slightly off centre, if you’re going to put it down the middle you’ve got to get a little bit of height on it. Schmeichel saved with his legs and it was still bloody 0-0.
The young ‘keeper was getting taunted with “Ian Wright Wright Wright” chants but I don’t really think that bothered him, he was having another great game and made two great saves from Van Persie and Fabregas before the goal went in with 10 minutes to go; Cesc got himself into a similar position on the right wing as Hleb was doing but this time instead of trying a stupid pass Cesc did shoot, and did score. He hit it high into the top of the net, sort of similar to RVP’s goal in the Emirates Cup.
Eduardo could’ve made it two late on but I don’t think he realised how little time you get in the English league. Also Schmeichel came up for a late corner at the end that Almunia caught, he could’ve thrown it out and we could’ve scored on the counter but he put it out for a throw because Flamini was down injured.
Anyway, we won 1-0, that’s three points. Performance overall wasn’t great but that doesn’t matter. A few players didn’t look very fit or on form but I’m really not bothered because we won. We face Sparta on Wednesday now, a vital game. more on that to come. Thanks for reading.

So the latest news is Lehmann’s injury and Gilberto’s possible return. Diaby and Eboue I believe are still out. Also there was the news that we will play two strikers and not Hleb supporting Van Persie. Alex has done a good job there but Arsene has said a game like this needs us to have two strikers.
So I’m thinking this as the team: Almunia, Clichy, Senderos, Toure and Sagna as the defence. Then Hleb, Fabregas, Flamini and Walcott across the middle. Then Van Persie and Ade/Eduardo up front. I cant decide which one Arsene will go for, I’m gonna guess with Da Silva.
However Denilson could start ahead of Flamini possibly or maybe Gilberto will get his first game of the season but I think he will be on the bench to be honest. Adebayor is back but unless Arsene thinks he’s fully match fit I don’t think he will start him.
Jens Lehmann picked up an achilles injury after this weeks internationals. Whether that’s a blessing in disguise, something made up by Wenger or an actual injury we wont know but it does seem awfully convenient. Le Boss has confirmed that Almunia will start with a tribute to our no.2. I know Manuel can do the job and I have seen him perform many times. However the biggest positive I’m taking from this is that when Almunia came into he first team ahead of Jens before, it made Lehmann a lot better so maybe something similar will happen again, or maybe this time Manuel will really prove himself with a decent run of games and become our new preferred goalie.
Tomorrow should be very interesting anyway. Anything can happen. I’ll have a match report up soon. Until then.
Lehmann out of squad to face Man City 23 August, 2007
Posted by lasagnechef in Arsenal News.21 comments
It’s just come up on Sky Sports news that Lehmann is injured for two weeks with an achilles injury.
Whether he’s ‘injured’ or not we will never know. However it’s quite likely that he has been dropped, I’ve heard that he didn’t have a great game for Germany either.
I’m guessing it’ll be Almunia coming in for him but I don’t know. More on this and other team news tomorrow.
Ade and Van Persie set to start 23 August, 2007
Posted by lasagnechef in Arsenal News, Premiership.22 comments

Arsene Wenger has confirmed that Alex Hleb wont we playing through the middle all season. I think we all agree that Hleb has done really well here and two goals already this season says a lot. However Arsene’s right in saying that Robin can’t be alone up front in all games, sometimes its better to have two up front. Here’s what Wenger said:
“Alex likes to play through the middle, but I must say if you ask Steven Gerrard or Tomas Rosicky or any of these kinds of creative players then they all say they want to play there. However I cannot isolate Robin van Persie up there the whole year. It does not work on a longer period. It can work in some games but it cannot be the basis of your game. You need two strikers.”
Adebayor is set to make his first appearance of the season on Saturday and I expect it to be him and Van Persie up front, especially with these latest quotes from Wenger. It’s going to be a really tough game this weekend, we really cannot underestimate City. They’re a young side full of confidence, belief and energy and they’ve just had a great min over rivals Man United. They will be coming down to London thinking they can cause an upset. We’ve got to pull together and not let that happen.

If Ade isn’t 100% fit the there’s Eduardo, who scored for Croatia last night, who will be ready and willing to step in. Also there’s the hungry Bendtner who’s desperate for games and would love an opportunity like this. His Denmark lost 4-0 Ireland; Nick hit the crossbar but couldn’t manage a goal. Also Lehmann’s Germany beat England at Wembley last night, I didn’t see the game so I don’t know how well he did. Do you? All the other news from this week’s internationals are here. The good news is, no new injuries to report.
The only other news really is on Gallas’ injury. He came out with quotes saying he’d be out until October but it appears he was talking about the national side and that three weeks we were told by Arsenal still seems correct. The French coach, Raymond Domenech wanted his team doctors to treat Gallas but Wenger insists that his treatments remains under our hands.

another game, another injury, another goalkeeping error 20 August, 2007
Posted by lasagnechef in Premiership.44 comments

“We can cope with the injuries we have but it’s getting down to the bare bones. Ade should be back for Man City and Gilberto comes back in September. All the others will return in one, two or three games I hope. We’ll be alright then but touch wood we’re not adding more names to the injury list come Monday.”
Before you ask, yes I did actually touch wood when I wrote that but obviously not hard enough. William Gallas picked up an injury which will see our captain out for 3 weeks. I’m not the biggest fan of Bill as captain but I do believe he is a very good centre-back and we will miss him. He’s done something to his groin and Philippe Senderos will come into the first team in his place. Now Wenger’s decision to loan out Djourou will be put to the test.
No match report for the Blackburn game I’m afraid because I simply didn’t see it. I tried internet streams but nothing came of it, I was just stuck with the infrequent reports on Sky Sports News as they wanked over the Chelsea and Liverpool game. That was 1-1 by the way and City beat United. United controlled the game but City must’ve been alright to hold them off; we play them next week at the Grove.
The Arsenal.com match report is here if you want to read. What I did pick up from the game was it was another physical match, but that was to be expected. We got 4 yellows as did Blackburn, two of which going to Ryan Nelsen who dragged down Van Persie as he was going through on goal.

We scored in the 18th minute thanks to a goalkeeping error by Friedel and Van Persie was the one to knock it in. Blackburn equalised in the 72nd minute thanks to another stupid mistake from Lehmann. Dunn shot well but it was going straight to Jens at a comfortable height, the home fans behind the goal sighed in disappointment but Jens scuffed the save and the ball went in behind him.
I know Jens is probably more upset at this error than us fans are and I’m sure he’s going to try his best to focus from now on so we shouldn’t be harsh to him. But FUCKING HELL JENS! You can’t do that at this level. That cost us 2 points and at this stage of the season we might not think about it but silly silly mistakes like that all add up. I would be in favour of Almunia starting against City but he won’t. Please Jens, sort it out, concentrate.
I would’ve taken the point before the game but they way we conceded it feels much worse. Wenger is satisfied with the result anyway.

Injury problems and we’ve only played two games 18 August, 2007
Posted by lasagnechef in Arsenal News, Premiership.23 comments

Fair enough they’re not anything serious but we’re picking up early knocks all over the place. Maybe you could put this down to not being fully match fit at this early stage of the season but it is still not good. Maybe this will tempt Wenger into the transfer market but I have a strong feeling the chequebook is firmly closed.
The new injuries to report are Rosicky and Eboue with slight problems from Wednesday night’s physical game. Our squad was thin in the winger department before these injuries and now it does give us some problems. I think Denilson is back now and it looks like Eduardo could be too:
“Eduardo might be back. I’m not sure if he will start because he has not done a lot yet. He had a little session today, but that was the first time with the team. He will have a test tomorrow morning and then I will decide. At the moment I am tempted to say no but he will be in the squad. If he is ok physically that means there’s no big pain in the ankle, but I will see. He is a brave player.”
It is only a might but if he’s back then that’s good news. Ade, Gilberto and Diaby are all still unavailable. So, in my opinion, these our the options for tomorrow’s game:
Hleb’s done really well for us in the middle and I think he would’ve started there tomorrow if it weren’t for these injuries but he might be put out on the left wing. Then I think little Theo will have to come in on the right. It’s bound to be a physical game so he’s going to have to show how much he’s grown up this season. Denilson played out wide against Liverpool last season and I was really impressed with him so he is another option but I think Hleb and Walcott are the most likely options.
Then up front I think we should start with Van Persie and Bendtner. Nick’s power and heading ability might come handy this game and it could be his chance to shine. If Eduardo is fit then I think he should be an option Wenger has on the bench if we have to chase the game.
If we wanted to go with 5 in midfield then it could be Hleb - Denilson - Fabregas - Flamini - Walcott with Van Persie up top. We know Robin can play on the wing too but he is wasted there and he is by far our best striker.
We can cope with the injuries we have but it’s getting down to the bare bones. Ade should be back for Man City and Gilberto comes back in September. All the others will return in one, two or three games I hope. We’ll be alright then but touch wood we’re not adding more names to the injury list come Monday.
The only other bit of news is on Arsene’s contract. On Friday Arsene said with a big smile, “We are very soon. Very, very soon.” I hope once his contract is all sorted he can convince some new players to sign contacts at Arsenal too.
Tottenham are winning 3-0 at the moment. Don’t worry, it’s only Derby. Thanks for reading.
Sparta Prague 0-2 Arsenal - 15/08/07 - (Champions League Qualifier) 17 August, 2007

Perfect. The performance might not have been amazing but in games like these, goals and results matter. Goals from midfield through Fabregas and Hleb, and fantastic assists from full-backs Clichy and Sagna. Before the game I was going to get my shirt printed with Clichy 22 and tonight he proved again why I’m really starting to love this player (in the end I was too late and the shop was closed but I’ll get it done soon).
It was the same team that started again Fulham in that new 4-4-1-1 formation. The first half was very physical and we were getting pushed all over the park and the tackles were flying in. We knew exactly what we could expect from their captain Tomas Repka and he was living up to his reputation. Around about the half hour mark he committed a bad challenge Van Persie but Cesc Fabregas was having none of it. Next time Repka picked up the ball it was time for Cesc to give him a bit of retribution and the resulting challenge saw Thomas having to be subbed a few minutes later.
Not an awful lot happened in the way of chances in the first half but you’d have to say the home side were on top. They looked on form and they weren’t allowing us to play our football. However we had another 45 mins to sort that out.
The game started off again in the same pattern as we left it however 10 minutes in Sparta old boy Rosicky played a nice ball to RVP who’s neat shot was saved well. It took until the 72nd minute for our vital goal to come and it was Cescy boy who got it. Sparta were knocking about the ball in their area but Clichy decided he was having none of it and raced to intercept a pass. He went on a short run taking one a couple of players and then played a beautiful little lay-off to Fabregas who finished well across the ‘keeper.

It was the vital away goal we needed and this 1-0 would’ve been a great result for us. Sparta hadn’t given up though. Lehmann was called into action a couple of times and it could’ve easily have been 1-1. They were having the final attack of the game deep into injury time so they had quite a few players forward but they must’ve not done their homework on Arsenal, kings of the counter attack. Lehmann picked up the ball and saw Sagna free on the left. He threw it out to him and Bacary charged down the full length of the field. He played a brilliant ball to Hleb who was being closely marked but Alex’s finish was even better; a cute little ball across the goalie into the far corner that just trickled across the line. All this with a Sparta defender right at his feet. Did he mean it? Probably not to be honest but no one cares. 2-0 to Arsenal full time.
Sorry about the lateness of the report. I’ve got to go now; I literally have work in 6 minutes. Bye!
Tonight is very important 15 August, 2007

Yep.
As arseblogger pointed out this is the most important game of the season so far so we really have to focus on this one. I think a goal is absolutely vital. A clean sheet at the Grove is quite a rare thing and we have to kind of expect that Sparta are going to come here in the second leg and score. 1-0 tonight would do the job but I think we could get more.
The team is set to be pretty much the same as Sunday’s; Eduardo, Adebayor, Gilberto, Diaby and Denilson are all out of the squad with minor problems.
Just writing that list there, that is 5 top players missing from our team. Yet we are coping fine with the players we have. Maybe Wenger was right about our squad is big enough? To be fair thou, another forward or central midfielder injured then we’d be in trouble.
Anyway yeah, I’m expecting exactly the same team as Sunday. Maybe Walcott could start instead of Eboue but I’m pretty sure it’ll be the same 11. That team should be more than enough to beat Sparta’s side; gunnerblog outlines the main stars of their team and to be honest it doesn’t look like that much to worry about.

Thomas Rosicky is looking forward to returning to his old club and ‘m sure it’ll be an emotional return:
“It will be the first time I have played against them. I grew up there. This is my club. I was there from seven or eight until my 20s and Sparta Prague prepared me for all the steps throughout my career. My brother played for Sparta Prague and my father played for Sparta Prague so it is a bit emotional. It will be strange for me because I have feelings for the club.”
He’ll be looking to make an impact on tonight’s game so hopefully we can look forward to a good performance from him.
Jens Lehmann will play tonight. Arsene admits he made a big mistake at the weekend but this won’t mean he’ll lose his place in the side. Hopefully now next time he’ll think about playing the safe ball.
Right I’m off to find a pub showing the game. I’ll try get a match report up tomorrow.
Arsenal 2-1 Fulham - 13/08/07 - (Premier League) 13 August, 2007

First thing first, the underground are wankers. Not only is because of them we had a stupid kick off time of 12:00 on a Sunday, but they also made me 20 minutes late for the fucking game. I went to my local station to find it was bloody closed with some stupid bus replacement service, I wasn’t going to wait for that so I had to go to another station miles away where I knew my ticket would cost double. When I finally got there I realised I’d forgotten my fucking railcard so it was even more over priced.
Then I had to wait half an hour for a train into central London. The station was full of United and Chelsea fans making their ways to their home grounds. I swear about 20 people saw me in my Arsenal shirt and said something along the lines of: “Aren’t you playing at 12? You’re gonna miss the game.” I didn’t take too kindly to these comments. Now there are a number of things that really annoy me in life…I hate waiting for trains, I can’t stand missing a single second of an Arsenal match and I hate Manchester United and Chelsea. I wasn’t in a great mood.
When I finally got to Highbury and Islington I started running to the ground and as I passed a pub they had Sky Sports News on and it came up: Arsenal 0-1 Fulham. I just stopped and stood there with my mouth open I couldn’t believe it. The guy was saying something about a terrible Lehmann fuck-up. So by the time I finally reached the ground my temper was at it’s highest setting and I was fucking exhausted, not being the fittest of people running in the ground in the sun.
So yeah I finally got there and we playing the team I pretty much expected with Hleb behind RVP but with Flamini in for Gilberto. We seemed to be on top of the game but Fulham were frustrating us really well. We had a number of decent attacks and some good shots but the reserve Fulham ‘keeper Warner was making some excellent saves. I found out after the game that Auntie Niemi got injured in the pre-match warm up but his replacement was having a blinder.
Half-time came and Fulham were very lucky to still be leading really. I wasn’t too worried at this stage as we had 45 minutes to go…and we only score this end. I saw Fulham’s goal Lehmann’s stupid mistake in the half time highlights. I couldn’t believe it, what a twat. Why did he pass it to the other side? Jesus.
The second half continued much the same and it was incredibly frustrating to watch. Could we lose to Fulham again? Well it was getting more and more likely and you wondered if it just wasn’t going to be our day.
Wenger threw on some more attacking players in the hope to find a goal; just after the hour Walcott came off for Eboue, and Bender replaced Rosicky 10 minutes later. Bendtner looked sharp and was winning all the headers as usual. Theo wasn’t as impressive as I thought he might’ve been after seeing him in pre-season but he was still causing Fulham problems. Toure and Gallas were getting forward too now, we needed a goal. Toure was really getting between the Fulham defence and for a while he looked our best player going forward.

In the end it was him that earnt us the goal. Kolo picked up the ball in Fulham’s half and drove into the box past a few defenders. I thought he might go all the way but his was brought down in the area and it was a fair penalty. Robin Van Persie placed the ball down and the whole stadium were biting their fingernails as he ran up to take it. It was a fantastic penalty screaming into he roof of the net, unstoppable for Warner. The goal lifted the fans and for the final 7 minutes of normal time the crowd were at full voice urging on a winning goal.
And it came…in the 90th minute…from Alex Hleb. Perfect. It was a really well taken goal by Hleb actually. He took down a long ball and sent the goalie the wrong way placing it in the corner. A great goal by Hleb and I hope there’s more to come. Ashburton Grove went mad apart from the Fulham corner who started filtering out.
It was a very frustrating game to watch. If you hadn’t of know you would’ve thought it was still last season. Nothing’s changed. In the end it was a great opening weekend for us: We got all three points, Tottenham lost to Sunderland in the last minute and 10-man Reading held Man United to a 0-0 draw in a game which Rooney picked up another foot injury which’ll see him out for two months. Lovely. Birmingham were unlucky not to cause an upset too at Stamford Bridge, but Chelsea were 3-2 winners.
Thanks for reading. Next game is Sparta away on Wednesday; build up to that to come.
Fulham Preview - The Prem is back. 11 August, 2007

Yes the opening weekend of the Premiership (or whatever the fuck it’s called now) is finally here and it’s started with a bang…a 94th minute Sunderland winner against the scum. Haha love it
We play tomorrow at home and Fulham are the visitors. I mentioned yesterday that Gilberto is out and Ade is unlikely to play, well you can add Eduardo to that list now as he’ll have a late fitness test. He looks likely to feature though and this is what Le Boss said about him:
“Certainly I would not be scared to play him. Maybe he will need a little bit of time but he is a fighter. He has the ability to score goals, he is quick and a team player so you are never scared to put in these players.”
If there’s any doubt about his injury I don’t think Arsene will risk him in a game like this. We could go with Hleb centrally behind Van Persie but that might be a bit defensive so there’s also the option of having the hungry Theo Walcott partnering the Dutchman.
The result of tomorrow’s game could really be anything; we’ve looked up for it this pre-season and we could thrash Fulham by a few goals, or maybe just nick it by one. However, I’m sure Fulham won’t be there just to make up the numbers, we cant underestimate them…last season Villa came on the opening day and frustrated us to a 1-1 draw. Don’t be too surprised if that happens again.
I’m looking forward to seeing how the atmosphere will be tomorrow, it was quite disappointing last season at times and with the departures we’ve had this summer we really need the fans to get behind this young side. I’m thinking it’ll be good but we’ll have to wait and see.
Right-i-o I have to get to work now. Enjoy the game tomorrow and should have a match report up Monday.
So, what’s your predictions? Mine? 2-0 Arsenal.
Defensive trobles as Djourou goes to Birmingham 10 August, 2007

Johann Djouoru has been loan out to Birmingham until January, it’s a good move for him as he’ll get plenty of first team football however it’s a bad move for us because we’re very thin in defence. I really rate Johan and I believe he would’ve got quite a few games but oh well.
Our back four is Sagna, Toure, Gallas and Clichy. That is a decent line up but say we get a couple of injuries, who have we got in reserve? Well there’s Senderos; he’s had a few shakey games but he can do the job well, hopefully he’s grown up a bit this year. That is about it as far as reserve centre-backs go, the rest are all reserves. At full back we have Traore and Hoyte in reserve and if we get desperate remember we’ve still got Eboue (who is now a winger). It’s centre back that I’m more worried about to be honest; in pre-season Song has played there and last season we saw Gilberto play in defence a few times so there’s also those two.
I suppose we can cope with Djourou but as I said the squad is looking a bit thin. The loan is only until January so he’ll be back for when everyone fucks off for the African Nations. Even still, so many loans until January get extended until the end of the season. Anyway he’s gone now, so we’re going to have to cope.
A bit of team news ahead of the Fulham game but you probably already knew. Gilberto is still on a break after his Copa America win and Adebayor is doubtful with a slight groin injury. I dont think Wenger will risk him. I’m guessing it’ll be that back for I mentioned above, then Fabregas, Diaby, Rosicky, Van Perise then either Eduardo or Hleb supporting RVP depending on what Approach Arsene’s going for.
I hope to get a proper preview up tomorrow but if I don’t, the match report should come Monday. Thanks for reading.
Gallas is the new Arsenal captain. 9 August, 2007
Posted by lasagnechef in Arsenal News, Transfers.28 comments

Sky Sports News are reporting this story that Gilberto is the new captain of Arsenal but it has been confirmed that William Gallas is new captain and Toure and Gilberto are the vice-captains.
I ran this story recently and I truly believed that Gallas wouldn’t get the armband. Maybe it’s a clever plot by Wenger so that this summer he’ll get bought by a top European team, who knows?
Wenger added that Jens will have a role in the captaincy too. I do agree that those four players have strong abilities as captain but I think Gilberto or Kolo would’ve been a better option, maybe I’m just saying that as a fun but I’m sure Wenger has made the right choice.
Our new captain has finally had something positive to say about the team. He talks about how this young team is going to go onto big things and he doesn’t see our squad as youngsters, we can still do great things with the team no matter what age they are. It’s wroth a read actually.
Van Persie has got some good words for Theo Walcott on the coming season. It’s on the same sort of subject as what Gallas has been saying and RVP think this is the season that Theo will really make an impact at Arsenal.

Eduardo has been talking about the new season and realises how difficult it will be to adapt to the physical nature of the Premier League. Against Ajax he was under quite a bit of pressure from the Dutch side but he performed well and that game was a great test for the upcoming season.
There are more rumours on the possible signing of Diarra from Chelsea. This article in The Sun says we’ve offered £5m for the midfielder. It’s been said many times before that we don’t need this player but this might be a deal too good for Arsene to miss out on.
Right I’ve got to go. Thanks for reading.
News catch-up 7 August, 2007

Loads of random bit’s of news today. Nothing really that exiting. The calm before the storm? Who knows…

My new legend, Gael Clichy is hanging on for an international call up according to Wenger. Gael has been excellent this pre-season and has worked his socks off throughout all the games; a fine example of this was the winner against Ajax. I expect this will be a great season for Clichy and he’s hoping it’s good enough to show the French selectors he deserves an international call-up.
Alex Song. Well…what can I say. Not the greatest Arsenal player in the world but at least he’s trying. He wants to try and play more games this season at centre midfield and centre back. He wants to prove himself to everyone this season. I’d love for Alex to become a great player, but he’s got a lot to do. Good luck to him, hopefully this season’s a good one for him too.
Ryan Garry has signed for Bournemouth on a five month contract. He’s never really made it at Arsenal, which is a shame, but the time has come now for him to move on and I’m sure we all wish him the best of luck.
Arsene says Van Persie looks like a new man this season and is going on to bigger and better things. Wenger says he’s ‘transformed’ into a much better player, a better passer of the ball and a great striker. He’s also said that now Thierry’s gone his responsibility is much higher, I believe Robin can deal with this and I think that now the focus is off Henry it will improve RVP’s game.

Last season when Bendtner was deciding whether to return to Arsenal or stay with Birmingham he emphasized that he wanted first team football and would only return to North London if he would be playing regularly with the first team. I’m worried that Nick will not be happy with the amount of football he’ll be getting this season. He is very young and Wenger has described him as a ‘raw talent’. He’ll get a decent few games this year I’m sure, and even more if we’re unlucky with injuries, but he is still developing.
Gallas has said he’d like to be an Arsenal captain. Great.
Also Hleb says his target is 10 goals this season. Sure.
I’ve had enough for today. Laters.
Ajax 0-1 Arsenal - 04/08/07 - (Friendly) 5 August, 2007

Two pre-season competitions and two trophies; surely the perfect start to a campaign? Fair enough these are only pre-season friendlies but if you saw last night’s game it was the perfect test going into the season. The game was played with the competitiveness, passion and caution of a Champions League game. Seriously, if you’d not of know it was the Amsterdam Tournament you would’ve thought it was a European fixture. Both teams had strong teams out and both teams needed to score to have a chance to take the cup; we needed to win and a score-draw or win for Ajax would’ve been enough for them.
It was also an extremely physical game. Tackles were flying in all over the place and there were a few squaring ups. If this were a proper game there would’ve been a few red cards I reckon and even though the referee was absolutely terrible he managed to keep the red card in his pocket.
We started with what looks like our strongest team; Gilberto is still on holiday and Fabregas was ill so Flamini and Denilson came in at centre midfield. It was the best team Wenger had available which showed how seriously he was taking this.
We started very brightly and we by far the better team of the first half. The closest we came to scoring was in the 19th minute when Van Persie floated in a beautiful ball for Toure who got a foot on it from very close range but it was straight at the ‘keeper and it was a great save. Van Persie looked on great form and he was really getting stuck into this game. At half time it was 0-0, Athletico hoped the score would stay this way and the cup would be theirs but it did look like a goal was coming it looked like Arsenal were the more likely to get it.
Clichy was also having a fantastic game. He shot from the left and the keeper saved well but the replay showed it was going just wide anyway. It was a game of many chances, Lehmann and Stekelenburg made some great saves to keep their sides in it. In the 80th minute it looked like substitute Eduardo could get the winner. Da Silva came on for Rosicky in the 62nd minute, Tomas looked fairly quiet last night and never really seemed to get involved, he didn’t have a bad game but wasn’t one of his best. Anyway, Eduardo muscled his way through on goal, staying up from some tight Ajax defending; he probably would’ve won a penalty if he’d gone down but he was desperate to get a shot away and stayed on his feet. His shot was saved and Van Persie missed the follow-up.

The goal eventually came 3 minutes from time and you just knew it’d be Robin Van Persie. All the credit must go to Gael Clichy. He’d been running up and down the left side for 83 minutes but somehow found the energy to go on a great run through the tired Ajax players. He cut inside between two defenders and squared to RVP. Robin took a touch and managed to squeeze the ball inside the post.
I’ve never celebrated a pre-season goal so much, it was quite embarrassing. That goal meant we took the cup and it was looking very promising for the new season. Robin was fouled from behind in the last minute and was carried ff on a stretcher. It wasn’t looking good for our no.1 striker but he was out celebrating with the trophy later on so it looks like it’s going to be alright.
In Wenger’s post-match interview he said that our squad looks big enough but is still browsing the transfer market. He also let slip that he’s in contract talks but says he’ll let us know at the right time the news on his future.
In all, a good night for Arsenal. Next it’s Fulham at home in the Premiership opener. Thanks for reading.
Sparta Prague / Ade Injured / Eduardo / Lazio 3 August, 2007
Posted by lasagnechef in Arsenal News, Champions League, Friendlies.25 comments
The draw for the qualifying round of the Champions League was this morning and we got Sparta Prague. We never seem to get the easy teams do we? We played Sparta not so long ago; it was against them that Henry beat Ian Wright’s goal scoring record. The first leg is on the 14/15th August away, and the 2nd leg is at the Grove on the 28/29th. Liverpool got Toulouse and Celtic got Spartak Moscow; it hasn’t been a great draw for the British teams, you can see the draw in full here. Going out in this round is absolutely unthinkable. We know we can beat Sparta and we should do the job without any slip-ups. More on the game in a couple of weeks.

Adebayor will be out for the start of the season with a groin problem. It’s nothing major but it’s enough to put him out of the Emirates Cup and Amsterdam Tournament. Arsene says he’s not going to take any risks and rush him back so he expects he’ll miss the season opener against Fulham.
Eduardo Da Silva has got his work permit. Yesterday he was granted his work permit and I suppose now he’s officially an Arsenal player (his deal was subject to him getting it). It was a relief it did all go through, we would’ve had a bit of a panic if it didn’t but it’s all sorted now. He celebrated the day by scoring the winning goal against Lazio last night.
We beat the Italian side 2-1 in the Amsterdam Tournament last night. We fielded quite a weak side with only Fabregas in there who’d make it into our best side. Bendtner opened the scoring in the 19th minute with a well taken goal. The ball fell to him in the area but his first touch wasn’t a great one and it made the angle difficult to finish from, but Nick did well and shot perfectly past the ‘keeper and the defenders on the line.
Pandev equalized in the 40th minute from some very poor defending. It all came from a corner and Eduardo seemed to be pushed over by the bloke his was marking. Everyone stopped expecting a free kick but the Pandev pounced on a loose ball and shot past Almunia. The defence should’ve thrown themselves at the ball but I suppose they were caught by surprise and just hopelessly stuck a leg out. It was a very sloppy goal and if it was a competitive game I’m sure Wenger would’ve been fuming.

Eduardo scored the winner 10 minutes into the second half. Rosicky took a good corner, which arrived right onto Da Silva’s head who was unmarked on the edge of the six yard box. A textbook corner, quite a rarity with these modern Arsenal sides. A good goal anyways and I’m sure Eduardo is delighted to get his first Arsenal goal in the bag. You can see all the goals here
So that 2-1 win gives us 5 points in the Amsterdam Tournament. Ajax are also on 5 after beating Athletico Madrid 2-0 and top the group on goal difference. The deciding game between Ajax and Arsenal is on Saturday evening.
Right I’m off. Thanks for reading.
Quick update 1 August, 2007
Posted by lasagnechef in Arsenal News, Transfers.20 comments

Sorry I haven’t been keeping the site very up to date this week…there’s a little bit of news to talk about.
Van Persie believes we still have a shot at the title this season. Realistically I’d say it’s going to be another year minimum before the Premiership trophy is back in our hands but I do admit our side does look a bit tasty for this year. Robin has been talking about how our age doesn’t matter:
Football is not about age. It’s not about money. Football is about if you want to run for each other, if you want to fight for each other, if you want to really play some ball. Liverpool have spent lots of money, Chelsea have been doing that the last few years, I respect that. This is their way of winning things. But we can win things as well. We are young. So what? Age doesn’t matter. It’s about the way we play football and the way we like to play together.
“If we win the title with this team that would be great. I really believe in my heart we can do it. I think the manager is thinking the same. I started pre-season on June 18 and I’m with these boys every day. I see their ability. Yes they are young and young people make mistakes but that doesn’t really matter.”
Encouraging words from RVP. If we have good luck with injuries this year then maybe we will cause the United, Chelsea and Liverpool some problems? Who knows? I’m really exited about the new season. To be completely honest though I wouldn’t bet on us being champions next year. I think we could go all the way in one of the cups, but I think for now the league is a bit of a long shot.
Robin’s also been talking about Henry’s departure. He says that he’s not thinking about how he must fill Henry’s boots. I know he will be the successor to Thierry, and he will be our top scorer this season. However, he shouldn’t think about this and let the pressure get to him. He must carry on just doing his thing and his natural talent will come through. I’m so exited about RVP this season, I’m quite sure this will be an amazing season for the Dutchman. I can just see all those important goals going in now. He looks really hungry from what I’ve seen this pre-season, lets hope that continues.
Jose Reyes has completed his move to Athletico Madrid. Apparently the fans were saying something about him playing for Real but I think they’ll realise they’ve got a decent player. Arsenal aren’t telling us the fee but I’m pretty sure we’ve made a loss on him. Oh well, I’ll remember the good times, especially those goals against Chelsea. Good luck Jose.

Cesc Fabregas has once again told us how committed he is to Arsenal. This summer there’s been a bit of speculation about him leaving and it’s been quite unsettling. I think it’s quite well known that one day Cesc will play in Spain again one day, it’s just a matter of how soon it is until he decides to go. I love Cesc, we all love Cesc…he could stay at Arsenal his whole career and be one of our greatest ever players. We’ll just have to wait and see what the future holds I suppose.
See ya.
