Sky Sports News are reporting this story that Gilberto is the new captain of Arsenal but it has been confirmed that William Gallas is new captain and Toure and Gilberto are the vice-captains.

I ran this story recently and I truly believed that Gallas wouldn’t get the armband. Maybe it’s a clever plot by Wenger so that this summer he’ll get bought by a top European team, who knows?

Wenger added that Jens will have a role in the captaincy too. I do agree that those four players have strong abilities as captain but I think Gilberto or Kolo would’ve been a better option, maybe I’m just saying that as a fun but I’m sure Wenger has made the right choice.

Our new captain has finally had something positive to say about the team. He talks about how this young team is going to go onto big things and he doesn’t see our squad as youngsters, we can still do great things with the team no matter what age they are. It’s wroth a read actually.

Van Persie has got some good words for Theo Walcott on the coming season. It’s on the same sort of subject as what Gallas has been saying and RVP think this is the season that Theo will really make an impact at Arsenal.

Eduardo has been talking about the new season and realises how difficult it will be to adapt to the physical nature of the Premier League. Against Ajax he was under quite a bit of pressure from the Dutch side but he performed well and that game was a great test for the upcoming season.

There are more rumours on the possible signing of Diarra from Chelsea. This article in The Sun says we’ve offered £5m for the midfielder. It’s been said many times before that we don’t need this player but this might be a deal too good for Arsene to miss out on.

Right I’ve got to go. Thanks for reading.

yes but to be Arsenal captain is all about tradition and honour, not all about who shouts the loudest on the training pitch. I dont question his skills as a captain just whether he is worthy. for me, he isn’t.
When he leaves will Toure finally get the job. he bloody well better.

Vieira-skipper-SOLD
Thierry-skipper-SOLD
Gallas-skipper hopefully he’ll fuck off soon

but in the mean time hope he plays well fo arsenal even though he is a cunt

Gallas has a reputation of being outspoken but he’s the best captain material at this time when the club need to have a fighting spirit and be tough. Gilberto and Toure? Good guys but times are rough for Arsenal and we need grit and someone who’ll stick to the northern teams and he has it. He’s shown leadership in the pre-season games he’s captained so I support Arsene on this. He’ll prove to be one of the best captains for us.

To be Arsenal is absolutely not anything to do with tradition and honour. It is about who can drive the young players to achieve things they have no right to be achieving and I think that Gallas is a great choice in that respect.

Toure is a great player and a dedicated and hard worker but he is not a great captain. Gilberto has done a very good job but he is a nice and quiet man and not a driver.

Henry had done so much for Arsenal that nobody could say that he didn’t deserve to be captain, based on his contribution but not many thought he made a great captain.

You need to be clear of the difference between a good player and a good leader.

After all the leadership qualities Gilberto desmonstrated/displayed (Don’t to go through them, all GUNNERS are familiar with Gilberto’s commitment to the cause) last season with a then ragtag team (by the ARSENAL standards). How does it fit, that Gallas now gets to be Captain of a team that will challenge for honours this year? See to me Gilberto should have at least had the opportunity to see his team that he brought through thick and thin last season

Gallas needed to walk the talk, pay some dues as an ARSENAL player before being Captain. Just the season before moving to the GUNNERS, when at Chelsea, he said ARSENAL’s days are passe.

Ima a Gilberto fan!

Positives:
- He has the personality - like Cesc said we need someone to bark orders or shake people up when the team’s making mistakes or not performing.
- He has the experience, fair enough.

Negatives:
- He hasn’t exactly earned it, has he? Unless you tell me he did truly extraordinary things with the team that AW saw off the pitch, in the dressing room, on the training ground, on the team coach, in the massage, in the medical room (where he spent so much time last season…), etc etc.
- His loyalty to the club is yet one thing he needs to prove.
- What kind of message does this send to his two deputies, especially Gilberto?

If I were to justify the appointment, I’d say there are some possible reasons behind it:
- Gilberto’s a calm but quiet character, but at the moment we need a barking type, as Cesc said.
- AW as he said wants someone from the defence (but I thought Gilberto who’s just in front of the CB’s would be close enough).
- In defence, Gallas is the oldest one, Kolo comes second in seniority.
- He’s French.
- AW wants to sell him in 2-3 years’ time.
- Gilberto and Kolo would get their chances to deputise anyway - he’s getting old and injury-prone.

I couldn’t help but wonder:
- Will this bring out the best in Gallas, as it’s been the case in pre-season where he’s all positive and encouraging and decent and reasonable and understanding?
- Would Cashley be secretly regretting his move? He could have been made captain if he’s still around.
- In Carling Cup, where we wouldn’t likely have Gallas and Gilberto, would the pecking order be Kolo > Cesc > Senderos? Cesc got the armband for the first time, and before Senderos, when Kolo was sent off in the CC Final.
- By AW’s logic, does this mean we’ll only have defenders or defensive midfielders as captains from now on? After Gilberto/Gallas retire/leave, I want Kolo and then Cesc to be captain as they’ll have EARNED it.

fucking disgrace!!!!

14. Alex - 9 August, 2007

YES A FUCKING DISGRACE ! BUT I HOPE HE WILL FUCK OFF SOON !
AND WE GET A GOOD DEFENDER LIKE MEXES !
FOR FUCK SAKE THAT STUPID GALLAS CUNT !

15. arseen it all - 9 August, 2007

good choice. he moans like a b*tch, it’s what the youngters need to keep their concentration and stick the boot in. you forget this boy is world class (although we haven’t seen it yet) and a born leader…

when we win the league, it will be labelled as a master stroke.

16. Louisa - 9 August, 2007

I agree he has the qualities. What’s wrong is that he hasn’t EARNED it! It’s a great honour to be our classy club’s captain. So to make up, he needs to stand by the club, thick or thin, and prove his loyalty. Moaning needs to be taken offline too, no more public embarrassment, although what he complained about was actually fair enough IMHO.

17. Norway Gooner - 9 August, 2007

Maybe Wenger needed to make him Captain to really get him behind the team.

Also, he worked great as a Captain in pre-season, so why change?

18. zak - 9 August, 2007

Gilberto is a nice man, too nice for captain.

19. jay - 9 August, 2007

If he has an average season (as captain) and we miss out on silverware, and gallas turns around next summer and says im off,
i will bombard his home with missiles and hatemail.

I know where you live William, so now that your captain be a fucking captain.

20. akmal - 9 August, 2007

My Selected:

Lehmann
Eboue-Toure-Gallas(c)-Clichy

Ok you all shouldn’t go creaming your jeans its only for a month thank Christ then Gilberto will be back. A gobby captain I don’t need.

22. akmal - 9 August, 2007

1st Games vs Fulham

Lehmann
Eboue-Toure-Gallas(c)-Clichy
Hleb-Diaby-Fabregas-Rosicky
vanPersie-Eduardo

At the bench:
Almunia / Fabianski
Sagna / Senderos
Walcott
Denilson
Bendtner

23. akmal - 9 August, 2007

I think this is the time for Gilberto leave the club and give to Diaby at the center midfield. We need Gilberto but in the best way we want Diaby show thier games for the future successful to the Gunners.
