Diaby considers leaving Arsenal 14 November, 2007

Abou Diaby

Sad news really. I’m a big fan of Diaby (when he’s played in centre midfield), but we possibly have the best collection of centre midfielders in the world. Fabregas, well, I don’t need to tell you about him. Gilberto is excellent and the captain of Brazil but I believe that he’s nearer the end of his Arsenal career than the beginning. However there’s Denilson, Flamini and Diarra fighting for that second place in the first team also at a young age.

I think Diaby’s got the talent to be the best out of those three names above but I completely understand his concern. I think Diarra is the long-term option in the first team and Denilson will probably end up competing with Merida etc for a place in the future. But for now, it looks like it’s Flamini and Fabregas in the team with Diaby only getting chances out on the wing or in the Carling Cup.

Here’s what he said:

“This time I have not been called up by France and I do not play that much for Arsenal. I need playing time. I thought that I would continue after I scored but it did not happen. I remain patient and do not give up because I know that my chance will come. Arsenal’s team is doing well so I have to show patience and it will be unlocked then. I do not regret my choices. Those things happen.”

“The situation is like this today but it can change tomorrow. The players that are on the pitch are not automatically better than those who are on the bench, but they do their job very well. The season is long so I do not plan a move yet. Maybe later if it continues, but not in January.”

There are some positives and negatives from those quotes. At least he believes his chance will come and he’ll carry on trying. I thought it would be hard to find Vieira’s replacement but Wenger found the absolute duplicate. Hopefully he doesn’t move on but we’ll have to wait and see what happens in the summer.

Ade

In other news, Adebayor talks about how his lack of goals recently was effecting his confidence. This was very clear watching him play and as soon as he goal that goal in the second half of the Reading game you could immediately see the difference. Hopefully he can still find that form after this 2 week break.

Ashburton Grove is prepared for the risk of a terrorist attack. Which is nice to hear.

And Arsenal.com has a nice little piece about some of our most beautiful Premiership goals. We scored our 1,000 league goal on Monday night and they’ve picked out some of the best to bring back some happy memories.

That’s about it for today. Look out for a t-shirt competition coming in the next few days or so. Bye bye for now.

why do we have such a collection of whining cry-babies who just HAVE to air their moodiness about being on the bench? if it’s not bendtner, it’s gilberto or lehman and now diaby. just shut your mouth and get on with practice and becoming a better player! there are high-profile people on the bench for manU or liverpool or chelsea, but you don’t hear as much incessant whigning from them about leaving if they don’t get to play more.

I think Diaby has the potential to be a major player within the game here and for France too, but he’s far from the finished product.

Given that he’s struggling to get a game in his preferred position, it’s perhaps not surprising that he hasn’t made the progress that we might like him to have made so far.

I wouldn’t say he’s a Vieira duplicate, but he can certainly learn things from Patricks game…when to hold onto the ball and when not to…making a simple pass when it’s the best option as opposed to trying to dribble through several opposition players and then losing possession…tracking back whenever we’ve lost possession…practising using your left foot for more than just standing on…these will do for starters.

I hope he stays at the club.

Incidentally, I don’t believe that we do have a collection of cry babies as described in the comments section above. Our players don’t decide to hold press conferences and then let off steam…they are asked questions by journalists and attempt to answer them – albeit naively – honestly. They’ll learn.

fabregas, denilson, gilberto, diarra, diaby and flamini. six players competing for the 2 centre midfield slots. fabregas is a certain, but i think diarra is the best out of all of them. its a shame to see gilberto on he bench, and on setanta while the arsenal v reading game was on they done a close up of him sitting on the bench, he looked quite disillusioned, which is a shame because i really liked him, but his days are numbered. diaby should stay and fight for his place, he has great potential

Got to say I disagree quite heavily about Diaby. If he wasn’t the same build as Patrick, nobody would be saying he should play central midfield. He has none of the attributes to play there. He can’t pass like Cesc or Denilson so they attacking berth is out of reach. He certainly can’t (or won’t) tackle properly, nor does he impose himself physically. His shooting is very hit and miss, and he also seems to lack a real drive to make things happen, something all of the other central midfield options possess (I discount Gilberto who is effectively on his last lap for Arsenal). He is also very one footed.

His strenghts lie in good ball control and pretty good dribbling skills, plus the odd good shot. Good attributes for a decent winger (since Arsene’s wingers are not required to cross the ball).

In reality, Diaby is going to have even more trouble getting games as the season goes on, with people like Denilson and Diarra improving quickly.

I wish him well but I don’t think he is the right kind of player for us.

He just needs to up his game but also he has to wait because he wont play ahead of diarra or gilberto but if he really determined then when his chance comes he has to grab it and establish himself as an Arsenal and also as a France regular but that is after Vieira has retired!

Tim, I think so too.

I don’t think Diaby is in any way better than the others. And as things stand I think Denilson has more potential than Diarra. He’s a much more Cesc like player. But I’m biased.

I just wish the Flamster woud sign a new contract.

Flamster???

Diaby is a decent player – In my humble oppinion he is a round peg in a square hole. He is not a left midfielder but is forced to play there more often than not. He will never take Cesc’s place in the team and with the way Flamini is playing he will not take his place either as Diaby can not tackle very well. Gilberto and Diarra have also played better than him when ever they have been given a chance. I do think that he may need to move on as the likes of Randall, Landsbury and Merida are all poised to break through to the squad soon. I have not forgot Dennilson – I simply see him as a like – for – like replacement for Cesc.

Good developing player – in the wrong place at the wrong time. By his comments, it looks like that has just dawned on him. Rather than work at improving his game (perhaps he doubts his own ability to devlop quickly enough and compete at Arsenal), he’s choosing to try to talk his way into matches. Bye Abou, nice knowing you.

Love this guy. His injury came at a very inopportune time and a horrible one it was.Flamini filled up for Gilberto and excelled. Maybe he’s the one Diaby refers to when he said “The players that are on the pitch are not automatically better than those who are on the bench, but they do their job very well”
Agree with the chef’s view that our central midfield is jam packed with talent. The season is still long and we’ll see……

14. arseinfullflow - 15 November, 2007

+ heh to mrs admission of his love affair with the lil curly haired brazillian……

if diaby leaves arsenal it will be a great shame, although fair enough he isn’t getting the games…as long as we play well i don’t mind..I think neither diarra nor song are as good as him, diarra may prove me wrong..
