What if Diarra & Flamini left? 15 January, 2008

We’re very lucky to have a wealth of fantastic, young central midfielders. You might say we have too many, however this calendar year it could be a completely different story. At the moment we have Cesc Fabregas, Matty Flamini, Lassana Diarra, Abou Diaby, Denilson and Gilberto; plus Song, Hleb and more in the reserves that can play there. However there are a few names that you wouldn’t be surprised to see elsewhere come August.

Diarra is the one we’re all expecting to leave. Recently I’ve heard whispers that Portsmouth are coming in with a £5m bid. I understand his reasoning behind leaving but he is really missing out on a great career at Arsenal. I’ve said my bit about Diarra before so I won’t bore you with it again. If there’s any truth in that Pompey move that’d be a 3.5 million pound profit for us over the space of a few months. Not bad going!

Flamini has been linked with a move away recently as his new contract still hasn’t been sorted. Apart from Cesc, he’s probably the one in that list we’d want to keep. He’s on the last year of his deal now and he can actually start talking to other clubs as of now. Wenger insists he’s ‘hopeful’ that a new deal will be done; I’ve heard it’s simply about money now, Flamini want a decent package and after his performances this year there’s nothing we can do about his demands. Usually Wenger avoids this sort of situation but everyone thought he’d be leaving in the summer.

Mathieu doesn’t strike me as a person who’s interested in the money side of football; he’s one of the guys you’d expect to just love the game and love playing. I think he is worth signing up even if it’s for more money but I don’t know how much he’s asking for and obviously there comes a price where Wenger will just say no.

If Flamini did decide to move on I’d say Diarra was the man to come into the starting 11 but he seems completely blind to the fact he’s only a step away from the first team. We’d be in a little bit of trouble if Diarra left because Flamini was keeping him out of the team then Flamini left in the summer because of this new contract. I really hope things are getting sorted out behind the scenes; he can afford to lose one of those two but not both of them.

Diaby and Gilberto’s futures are in some doubt too. Abou is a good friend of Diarra’s and I’ve heard he’s unsettled too. I can’t imagine his preferred position is left wing but that’s the only way he seems to get in the team at the moment. Gilberto is getting on and he’s only been picked for a few games this season mostly in the cups. I wouldn’t be surprised to see him move on in the summer; maybe he’ll go back to Brazil?

With all of those there’s nothing we can do as fans but just sit and wait and see how it all unfolds. Last night Arsenal TV launched and the main feature was question time with Matt Lucas, Ray Parlour, Martin Keown and Arsene Wenger. It was quite interesting to watch and we got some decent answers out of The Boss. He says he hopes to have a mainly English side in the future and that Goodison Park is always a hard ground to play at because of the noise. He also spoke about Anelka’s move to Chelsea and that he thought about bringing him back to Arsenal. We all heard the rumors in the summer and it was quite exciting but Wenger decided against the move because he thought it’d be wrong for the club and once a player has left, they’ve left.

There’s still not much news around this week. Hopefully I’ll have something good to talk about tomorrow. Until then.

Thankfully I can’t see Flamini leaving. It makes little sense for him to go after being talked into staying at the club at the end of last season and then working his way into the starting side.

He mentioned a while ago that he didn’t want to focus on the new contract - that he wanted to focus on winning games - and I don’t think we have any reason not to believe him. I’m sure this sort of stuff takes a lot of time and he’ll work it out.

Not worried at all.

2. Ole Gunner - 15 January, 2008

We’ll sign other players. We’ll convert other players to play there. I hold no fear at all of that.

What is obvious is that Arsene wouldn’t sell any player mid-season if he is needed. And Flamini wouldn’t leave in mid-season.

funny thing about flam he has previous he did something like this with his former club and walked out on a free to us

4. CHIMA NNAWUBA - 15 January, 2008

loosing FLAMINI and DIARRA at the same time will be disastrous but if they both leave by the end of the season then we have enough time to replace them before the commencement of the league.but one thing for sure is that anyone who leaves the ARSENAL fold we regret it.mark my word.

5. MANUTD4EVER - 15 January, 2008

The Emirates is a good springboard for players to get experience, before leaving to go to bigger and better clubs.

6. mickey moo - 15 January, 2008

i hope flim flam stays but i wouldnt be jumping off any bridges if he didnt. He has had a good season but i want better for arsenal, ive said it before that he would struggle to get in any top team in the world but hes ok for us, i want kaka. and i remember very recently the boss saying that kaka would fit very nicely with cess, am i reading too much into this ? Ive had enough, as ive heard others complain, that we just focus on teenagers or convert .WE HAVE MONEY get out and let the world know arsen that we are making our move. And if these players do want to move on then thats fine by me, who do they think there going to play for, does anyone think that apart from the next level down = spuds/aston villa /everton ect that a top team is going to come in for flamini, hes not that good, in my opinion not good enough for our first team, i want better and i think all gooners should too

7. CYGUNNER - 15 January, 2008

manure is good side for ending carierre

8. MANUTD4EVER - 15 January, 2008

Kaka, what a joke! What draw does your club offer a ‘world class’ player?
Do you honestly think Kaka is sitting there wishing that he could play alongside walcrap or van persil?
You only attract young players becuase they know they have a chance to play first team football, when they start to mature (Flamini) they want to move on and play alongside world class.
A couple of months ago all the goons were calling flamini arsenal’s Gatuso….now that he wants a better club he ain’t good enough; Same old story, “if he leaves us he must be sh*t”…

jokers

9. Gooner Don - 15 January, 2008

Mickey Moo yes we have money loads of it but Wenger right or wrong has decided he wont spend it and wants to rely on youth.Only when the kids fail to actually win things will Wenger change this policy.

10. Ollie - 15 January, 2008

Don’t worry, ‘chef, you’re just getting as bored as us on thisno-midweek football week.
Whether 1 or 2 or more leave, there will be replacements lined up.

What is a Man Utd fan doing on an Arsenal website? Sounds like a closet case to me. Back to the issue at hand, as much as I like and rate Diarra, the negative attitude currently displayed isn’t helpful at all, much like Lehmann, but at least he has learnt to keep his mouth shut and just work hard. I really hope Flamini stays because at the moment, we don’t have an in-form player in that position. One thing I’ve always considered is, what would happen if Wenger bought a capable, experience defender, a good foil for Gallas, and played Toure in the holding midfielder mould? His distribution and ball control cannot be denied as he is quite profficient.

12. Graham - 15 January, 2008

I would love to see Toure in midfield, i believe that even in the holding midfield role he would score his fair share of goals and if we could get a quality centre half to play alongside Gallas we would be improving our heading ability for set pieces as currently we have no height in center midfield without Gilberto

Flam is just testing the market so that he can negotiate a better deal. If doesn’t like the deal that Wenger gives him, his value is higher for Juve or someone else to pay it. We’ll need to buy another player if we don’t have either Flam or Diarra next year, but they’ll be around until the end of 2008.

14. Steve-o - 15 January, 2008

I still can’t understand why manure supporters go around to rival blogs to talk shit. *shrugs*

chef, like ollie said, you’re not the only one struggling to come up with stuff to put on the blog. but this is a good topic to ponder tho. Will he sign, won’t he sign?

Fuckers,

In a couple of years, we’ll know who makes the fucking grade, and who’s a fucking flash in the fucking pan. With regards to our Cm positions, we’ve got a basket full of fucking yellow rocks - only we’re too fucking stupid to know whether’s it’s fool’s gold or the real, fucking deal. We know three things: Cescs’s a fucking keeper, Gilberto’s fucking old, and Flamini’s the ugliest fucker in the squad. Apart from that, we all know fuck-all.

Flamini’s been fucking top class this year, but we don’t know if he can keep it up. I can barely comprehend how such an ugly fucker can even look in the mirror in the morning without trying gouge his fucking eyes out, much less have the fucking stamina to play Gattuso for the fucking Arse.

Diarra has the potential to be fucking awesome. You fuckers know my fucking position on that fucker, so I won’t repeat my fucking insightful, fucking sensible, fucking all-knowing and wise statements. Needless to say, if that fucker leaves, it’ll be a mistake of Anelka-like proportions.

Diaby and Denilson haven’t made the fucking grade, and unless they get more games, it’s fucking unlikely they will. Fuck’s sake, Diaby’s 22. He’s an old fucker, almost too old to be classes as one of Wenger’s “kids”. If he doesn’t cement a fucking place in the side, the best thing he can do is fuck off to Birmingham. The same with Denilson - only difference is that he’s got more fucking time.

16. Goons_with_Guns - 15 January, 2008

Wenger will not let both go without getting a replacement from someone in return. He’s learned from his season-to-early sale of Viera mistake.
If Flam doesn’t sign now, Wenger will force Diarra to stay til the end of the season. If Flam does, he will let Diarra go now, simple as that.

I thougth this was a topic to discuse flamini and diarra furture @ the club, not a competition of who should use the F ward the most.
CONNOLLY AGENT as you call your self this was not a cusing competition grow up.
And for the manu fan on here the only reason u spy and concern about your competitors is when u are scared, please stay in your own lane, this was for Arsenal fans ONLY thank you.
Now to topic in hand, simple if wenger let diarra go it means by all means flam is gonna stay, but I really hope they both stays.

19. Connolly's agent - 16 January, 2008

For f**’s sake, Jayboy, even if you don’t use the f***ing “f” word yourself, don’t think no one else does. It’s part of my f***ing lingo. I can’t f***ing help it. My f***ing vocabulary isn’t as f***ing grand as yours.

I’ld like to add that I’m very much pro-Diarra. That f***er’s going to be f***ng great. If I swear, it’s becase I’m f***ing agitated about that f***er leaving us. And the tragedy is that I can’t see Flamini improving on what he already is. It un-f***ing-avoidable that we’ll lose one in the near future, but it looks like it’ll be the wrong f***ing one.

And MANUTD4EVER has as much f***ing right to comment on this f***ing blog as the rest of us f***ers. If he wants to be a shit-stirring jerk, it’s his right. Just as, if you want to be a peace-loving mediator, it’s your f***ing right. Can’t all us f***ers just f*** in peace?
