Walcott - England

I was tempted not to update the site today due to there actually being no news, but I thought I better write something. I could’ve done some sort of play analysis or have a look at the remaining fixtures for the title run in but 1. I’ve been working all day and didn’t have time, and 2. I’m lazy.

Anyway, England U21s played Ireland last night and they won 3-0. Theo Walcott got the third goal too and it was pretty decent one. He found himself in space just inside the area to the left and swerved a shot inside the far post - pretty much unsavable. The game was also at Theo’s old home, St. Mary’s and he got a good reception, which hopefully will do his confidence some good.

Despite what you might’ve read in the papers today, Theo didn’t have an incredible game, he wasn’t unplayable and he certainly didn’t steal the show. I had last night’s game on in the background last night and he was pretty anonymous despite doing a few decent bits; not saying he played badly though. He’s been majorly over-hyped in this morning’s tabloids; there were calls for a full international call up, which is just stupid. The U21s is a great level for Walcott to play in, he playing with guys pretty much his age and there isn’t as much expectation put on his shoulders. I hope Fabio Capello doesn’t use Theo until he’s properly ready and getting a good run of games at Arsenal: which is what he’s aiming for.

The full England team beat Switzerland 2-1 tonight. Big Phil Senderos picked up a knock early in the game to the top of his foot but he carried on. However, he was taken off early into the second half. Hopefully he wasn’t substituted for injury reasons but I thought it was strange that the Swiss took off their captain.

I reported yesterday that Flamini had picked up an injury with France in a friendly last night but I’ve been told he was on the bench tonight when ‘Les Bleus’ played Spain. He must be alright then. Thank fucking God.

That’s it for tonight then. A few of our players were in action tonight so lets hope I’m not reporting more injuries to you tomorrow. Good night.

Fuckingshitbollocksinternationalinjuringbastards! Tonight France drew 0-0 against Congo in an international friendly and our Gattuso was forced off inside 20 minutes. Matty picked up an ankle injury and could not play on. In the article I’ve linked they say it wasn’t too serious but I suppose we won’t know the full extent of it until Arsenal.com reports it. I’m praying that it’s not going to force him to miss any games; he’s been incredible for us this season and at the moment he is running our games from midfield.

Tonight’s game didn’t get a lot of coverage so there aren’t many stories out there about this injury so we have to just guess at how bad it may have been. I think it was on Eurosport so there might be some clips around with some footage but I can’t find any. What worries me is that Matty is a player who can take tackle so it must’ve been something a bit worrying if he could take no further part in the game.

As I say, we can only wait to hear how bad it is but it’s looking more likely than not that it’s not too bad. As soon as I see some official comments I’ll write them up on here. Clichy also played tonight in what was his first appearance in the French shirt. Sagna also got a game but Diaby could only make the bench.

There’s not much else to report; I was thinking today about how I’d have nothing to write about tonight but I suppose no news would’ve been good news. Arsene’s been talking more about the title race saying that games against United and Chelsea will be vital. Also Pato might be fit to face us. Pato who I hear you ask? ‘Adebayorrrr’, I hear you sing…‘Give him the ball, and he will score’. Indeed.

Speak to you tomorrow.

Especially ones that precede an international break. Some of our players will have joined up with their nations today and yesterday so there isn’t really anything interesting going on.

Wenger’s been talking about Adebayor and the great form he is in. It’s amazing the progress he’s made this season but Arsene doesn’t really know how:

“I don’t know what it is down to, but perhaps we have a little bit of special spirit in the club. Certainly he has found somewhere where he can express his talent and he realises it is a magnificent chance. But it is down to his talent and dedications as well. [Before he signed for us] there was a question mark about Adebayor - his attitude and his spirit. Did we change him or did he realise he had wasted enough time already? I don’t know.”

It could have a lot to do with the spirit in the squad, he always looks really happy on the pitch and just generally seems like he’s enjoying himself. Gunnerblog has a good piece on him today and looks at any comparisons to some of our previous strikers.

Arsene’s also been talking about the title race saying that it might take a record amount of points to win the league this season. It definitely going to be an exiting run in, don’t know about you but I feel so good to be back in a title race again, it’s been too long.

Kolo Toure didn’t play in the Ivory Coast’s African Nations Cup quarter final but I believe he’s set to start the semi. Kolo’s been talking about returning to Arsenal and he’s worried that his trip to Ghana will effect him. He’s worried about all the games he’s played and he also said he thinks he’ll have to fight for his place in the side when he gets back. I don’t think either of those are a problem, Arsenal are playing games too over here and everyone will be more comfortable with Kolo at the back than Senderos so I don’t think Toure has a lot to worry about…

And finally, I’ve heard that AC Milan wonder kid Alexandre Pato and Gattuso are both injured and are likely to miss the Champions League games. Good news for us. Carlo Ancelotti has said Pato’s injury “is pretty serious” and there’s also doubts on Kaka’s fitness…ooh goody.

Right I’m off to carry on with more work, argh…roll on Tuesday.

Man City 1-3 Arsenal - 02/02/08 - (Premier League) 3 February, 2008

We are top of the league, I said we are top of the league.

What a brilliant day yesterday was, apart from the scum not being able to do a simple favour and just beat Man Utd; they conceded in the last minute with the last touch at the near post from a corner. Absolute useless bastards. Still, it was 1-1, so was Chelsea v Portsmouth, so we’re two points clear at the top now.

We travelled to Manchester knowing that no other team has managed to win there in the league so it wasn’t going to be easy. We got an early goal though after 9 minutes, and yes, it was Adebayor with the goal. Sagna made the run down the right, cut inside the defender along the goal line and squared it to Adebayor. Micah Richards threw himself to the floor to block Ade’s shot but it took a lucky deflection off him to go into the net.

A good start by us then. The goal didn’t fully deflate the home side though; obviously it affected them a little but they did their best to get back in it. They won a dangerous free kick on the right, which was whipped in well, and Diaby did a great job to get a head to it, as there was a City player right behind him with an otherwise free header on goal.

It was end-to-end at times and was turning into a really good game. We went two-nil up after 26 minutes. Clichy made a run down the left and crossed it in, at first it seemed like the cross had been over hit but Adebayor didn’t give up and managed to get a head to it and play in back into the danger area. Eduardo got to it, took a touch on the chest then on the turn he acrobatically put the ball in the far corner. A great goal and nice to see Eduardo back scoring, seems like a while since his last.

We lost our two goal advantage almost straight away though. Clichy uncharacteristically made a silly mistake allowing Corluka through. Gael was trying to block the ball and watch it go out for a goal kick but he was out muscled and caught out and Clichy let him through along the byline. He passed to Fernandes who made it 2-1.

It’s always a shame to concede just after you’ve scored and City were right back in it. We had to concentrate now and not concede another. That goal gave them a lot of confidence and a second goal could easily go in. In the remainder of the first half both sides had decent chances but it went in at the break 2-1.

I had a feeling that after 3 early goals the scoring might dry up and I was pretty much right. We were still on top but we couldn’t manage a third. A had a few corners in the second half and Fabregas hit a shot over the bar. City were still in it but the game really turned in our favour towards the end of he game: Sven had to gamble and he made some attacking changes allowing us space to go forward. We had two or three excellent chances on the counter attack but we couldn’t manage to score; the wrong pass, sloppy moves or taking too much time and City could clear.

We did manage that third goal with three minutes to go. Adebayor picked up the ball in our half and started to break but he was blatantly tripped from behind on the halfway line. Hleb was running behind him and the ref waved play on so we continued to break, Ade got back on his feet and carried on attacking. Hleb made it up to the area and by this time Adebayor had made his way back to the box. Alex squared it and Manu tucked it in the corner to get his 8th goal in 6 games. Game over.

It was a reasonably good performance yesterday, Flamini and Adebayor once again brilliant. Clichy made a few errors, which was unlike him, but I couldn’t say he had a bad game. Jens was back in goal and of course he had one or two crazy moments but you have to expect that. Senderos had another good game and that nervous Phil we saw earlier in the season looks far away.

Next up we have Blackburn on a Monday night. However before that I believe there are some international friendlies this midweek. Please please please no more injuries…we’ve got it bad enough as it is. Talk to you soon.

Man City Preview: Almunia’s injured 1 February, 2008

The breaking news this afternoon is that Manuel Almunia has picked up a thumb injury and will miss tomorrow’s game. I don’t really know much about it but there are stories popping up on NewsNow. Nothing’s come out on Arsenal.com yet so I cant 100% confirm it. I said last month that it would be quite good for us if Jens stayed because then we’d have two top quality ‘keepers to pick from. The transfer deadline passed last night and Lehmann is still with us, and my point has been proven and it looks like he’ll play tomorrow.

Apart from that the team is pretty much the same, largely due to injuries. It’s crazy the amount of players we have out at the moment: Toure, Eboue & Song are away in Africa, Rosicky’s got a hamstring problem, Djourou a groin injury, van Persie…well you know, and of course there’s Almunia now too. We’ll manage alright tomorrow though, Senderos is doing well as cover for Toure and Diaby had a good game in the week so will fill in for Rosicky. The team will be this:

Lehmann
Sagna - Senderos - Gallas(c) - Clichy
Hleb - Fabregas - Flamini - Diaby
Adebayor - Eduardo

The only change from that would be if Almunia plays depending on the truth behind that story; keep your eyes on Arsenal.com for confirmation.

Man City have been a surprise package this season with Sven. They broke into the top 4 at the beginning and they’re not far off the pace now. However they’ve had a slight dip at the moment and they were knocked out of the FA Cup the other weekend. When Liverpool went up to The City of Manchester Stadium they parked the bus and I’m expecting them to do it again tomorrow. It’s incredibly frustrating but we have should have enough skill to craft a goal. I wouldn’t bet against a Clichy cross and an Adebayor header.

We need to win tomorrow, the title race is going into the most important stage, but as I said, it won’t be easy. United travel to Shite Hart Lane so hopefully the scum can do us a favour there. Remember our game kicks off at 12:45pm so make sure you’re up! Match report to come on Sunday, until then Gooners.
