Not a lot going on today, which doesn’t bother me too much as I’m knackered. Was tempted not to update the site at all but that would just be mean.

There are a few stories coming off the back of Saturday’s inspiring win at Bolton. Gallas and Toure have both been talking about Wenger’s half time team talk and how it changed the game for us. Unfortunately I don’t have Arsenal TV Online so I can’t actually listen too what our centre backs have said about the team talk, so yeah, sorry.

You have to credit the manager with the part he played in Saturday’s game. He obviously said to the players that he believed in them and told them to go out there and fight back. However he got it right tactically too. We ended up playing a strange 2-2-2 formation down the middle of the park with Clichy and Walcott on the flanks and then Hleb was given the freedom to roam Bolton’s half. Not traditional, but it worked, we completely dominated the second half. Here’s what Le Boss had to say:

“We needed a win because we had not won for a while and eventually that plays on your mind. Also it is a good basis to prepare for Wednesday’s game. We know there were three Liverpool games and Manchester United on the back of this game so it was very important for us to win.

We will fight until the last second. We believe we can do it but now we must just play our next Premier League game against Liverpool and then go to Manchester United.

But this is a weight off the shoulders really because we had a heavy disappointment at Chelsea. The belief is in there again now. We would not have won this game if we had not had the belief. We were 10 v 11 and 2-0 down, without belief that is impossible.”

Nice to hear him say “we will fight until the last second”, but it is a bit worrying when he says our next league games are against Liverpool and Man United. The outcome of those two games will surely determine our place in the title race.

We need to forget about the Premier League for the moment though, next up it’s Liverpool in the Champions League; the first of three games against the Scoucers in six days. It might feel like a domestic game, but we have to give 100% everything in this European game because we’re as much in this tournament as anyone else is.

Liverpool will be up for it too and we all know that they have a knack of doing well in Europe. We need to try and upset that. Our game’s not ’til Wednesday night, so I’m going to save the match build up for tomorrow.

The only other bit of news is that Eduardo has come out of his cast. Good news that his recovery is on track. He’s still a long way away but it’s nice to know everything’s going to plan, I’m still not expecting him until about Christmas though, when you can guarantee Wenger will describe his comeback as ‘like a new signing’.

Right then people, I’m off. I’ll speak to you tomorrow with the first of many Liverpool match previews. Until then.

Jesus Christ, that was emotional. 2-0 with ten men at half time, it was looking like a disaster but 3 goals in the last half an hour gave us all three points in an incredible come back. It was a horrible feeling at half time, I sort of couldn’t believe it, it was so bad to be true.

It was an amazing game, I didn’t get to watch it but I was listening on the radio, which made it even worse because I didn’t have a fucking clue what was going on.

We started with a quite mix-and-match team. Kolo was right-back, we had Diaby and Hleb on the wings and it was Bendtner up front partnering van Persie.

We started the game well; we were knocking it around with confidence and creating chances. We were by far the better team in the opening stages; I was thinking it’d be nice if we could get an early goal. However it was Bolton it took the fucking lead after 14 minutes. They got down the right and sent a really great cross into the box where there was just Taylor to aim for. He continued his run and beat Toure to the header sending it low down my Almunia’s side making it hard for him to react to.

We tried not to let it get us down though, we carried on playing. van Persie was out through just to the left of the box, he sent a cross in which was put out. From the resulting corner the ball found it’s way to Toure outside the box, he let fire and the ball took two or three deflections and ended up just agonisingly bouncing past the post; it could’ve gone anywhere.

Things went from bad, to worse 12 minutes from the break. The ball was passed to Steinsson who passed quickly but Abou Diaby has already committed his lunge in and we went studs first right into his standing foot. It was a stupid challenge from Diaby and he was sent off. Fuck. We had to play with 10 men for the last hour of the game, not the end of the world, but we were a goal down.

It looked like we were going to break one man, and one goal down…but then things got really bad. We had a throw-in, right in the corner of the pitch. We were passing it around to start an attack when Flamini was unaware of the pressure behind him and lost the ball in a dangerous position. Bolton picked it up quickly on the edge of the box. Diouf squared it and Taylor came running in and smashed it, Senderos dived in but it actually came off Gallas who was standing right in the way but turned his back deflecting it right into the corner out of Almunia’s reach.

Half time was a long 15 minutes. It must’ve been the worst half time of the season, 2-0 down to Bolton, with 10 men and it looks like we were stuck on this terrible bad run. As I said earlier, I found it hard to believe. For me, it was a mixture of depression, confusion and couldn’tgiveafuckness. I was just like, fuck this, I hate football, season’s over. Gunnerblog wrote his match report after just 45 minutes, he’d seen enough also.

We still had a whole second half to go though.

We nearly went three down early in the second half. Almunia gave away a free-kick out wide after charging out to clear the ball. A dangerous ball was headed out by Bendtner but from the resulting corner Almunia was forced to make a reaction save with his leg on the line. Jesus fucking Christ Arsenal.

An hour gone, and it was still 0-0. Something needed to be done. Wenger decided it was time for the change. A bit late in my opinion but oh well. Theo Walcott came on for Senderos and the rested Adebayor came on for Bendtner, who didn’t have a bad game, he just didn’t look as likely to score. It was a very attacking formation considering we had 10 men; we needed to go for it.

Their impact was immediate. Robin van Persie won a corner, which Fabregas took, he sent it deep and Gallas came running in to the back post completely unmarked to slot it in. It was comical defending, shocking from Bolton. 2-1 now, come on Arsenal, we can get another goal cant we? We ran straight back to our half for Bolton’s kick-off. Game on.

We needed another goal, and we didn’t have long to find it. However 6 minutes later, in the 69th minute, we won a penalty. It was a great attacking move from Arsenal with some great one touch passes which resulted in Hleb getting fouled. I was thinking, Adebayor’s going to take this and miss it, however van Persie placed it on the spot, the man who hasn’t scored since October had the hopes and prayers of the Arsenal fans on his shoulders. He stepped up and send the ‘keeper the wrong way smashing it to the right.

We’d done it! What a come back! No. No we hadn’t done it, a draw with Bolton wasn’t good enough. We didn’t have long but we still had to try and win this. It was going to be risky because Bolton can break but we still had to go for it.

It didn’t look like it was going to be though; we had a few chances in the final 10 minutes. The best coming to van Persie when Walcott did some great work down the right to send in a low cross to the near post but Robin smashed it high and wide. He had a similar chance from the other side a few minutes later, this time Flamini provided the chance but van Persie smashed it way off target again.

This looked like it was going to be 2-2, oh well, at least we didn’t lose. We had just a few minutes of injury time to get that winner. Come on Arsenal!

Clichy picked it up on the left, send a great through ball to Hleb who took it to the by-line. Fabregas was in a bit of space just behind him, and Alex cut it back. Fabregas shot, it took two deflections but somehow found it’s way in! We’d done it! FABREGAS! YESSSS! What a come back, what a fight! Come on Arsenal!!!

Everyone went mental! It was brilliant. Oh my god, we left it late but we’d done it. It went down as a Samuel OG but who cares?

3-2 final score, what a game. What an emotional game, why can’t we just win easily? I’m knackered just re-writing it all this morning. Jesus. Thanks for reading.

Right, after a rather shit weekend we have to get our heads down and get on with it. It’s a trip up north to The Reebok which was been a hard place to go in recent times. However they’re a different side now, Allardyce’s side used to kick us off the park and nick points off us but they’re not as good anymore.

Anelka’s left for a level of greater cuntishness, Jaaskelainen is injured and Allardyce is long gone. Their ‘keeper often has the game of his life against us so I’m pretty glad he’s out.

What I’m trying to say is, they shouldn’t trouble us. I used to fear Bolton away but we really shouldn’t be having trouble playing up there anymore. After last weekend’s nightmare we really, really need to end this bad streak with a win tomorrow.

Anything other than three points, and we really are in disaster mode. We could really do with a comfortable win here, for confidence’s sake. 3-0 would do the job nicely. It seems perfectly possible, the players wont be happy about slipping up in the title race and I’m sure they’ll want to put in a good performance more than the fans might want them to.

You have to think about the possibility of the unthinkable. If Bolton we to hold us to a draw, of even win, then I think I might commit suicide. I can see Bolton scrapping out a draw too. We need to show that we are The Arsenal and we are better than fucking Bolton Wanderers. If we don’t take all three points then we truly are out of the title race; mathematically it’ll still look possible but the resulting misery from dropping points to Bolton will surely rule it all out.

I can’t actually remember the last time we won. It was against Blackburn, but it seems so long ago. A win tomorrow is vital. I know I’ve basically said this in different ways in every paragraph of this post, but that’s how important a win here is.

Team news. Sagna is out for at least three weeks from that injury he picked up at Chelsea. Fuck. He’s been brilliant for us this season, one player you can always count on. So that leaves us with three options, Hoyte, Eboue or Toure. I’m hoping Arsene goes for Kolo, he’s not a natural right back but he has a lot of power going forward and always does everything he can. That’s mean brining Senderos back into the middle and some people have been saying this week that he never should’ve left. He found a bit of form while Kolo was out but lost his place to the Ivorian, it’s be nice to see him back.

There are no other injuries or recovered players but Arsene has hinted he might rest Adebayor. Wenger said, “He would need a little breather, maybe.” and then said that he has Bendtner and van Persie. I’m going to take that hint and guess that he rests Ade. I was thinking earlier this week that it could be an option. With Liverpool coming up we need him to be as sharp as possible.

With those two changes in mind, here’s how I see the team:

Almunia
Toure – Senderos – Gallas (c) – Clichy
Eboue – Fabregas – Flamini – Hleb
Bendtner – van Persie

I’m still waiting to see Walcott play but I don’t think this’ll be his week, I bet Eboue starts again. Theo might have trouble being pushed around tomorrow afternoon so there might be a tactical decision made there. Still, he’s good coming off he bench blah blah blah…

It’s a 3pm kick-off tomorrow so it’s not on UK television. I’m going to a local pub that has all the dodgy channels, so they might be able to pick it up there. If I do manage to catch the game, there’ll be a match report on Sunday. Thanks for reading, Happy Friday people!

International Round-Up 27 March, 2008

Not a lot of news around today, just bits and pieces from the international games last night. There’s a full round-up here of our players involved but I can tell you Bendtner scored against Czech Republic and Senderos was on the wrong end of a 4-0 win for Germany in which Jens Lehmann kept a clean sheet. Fabregas, Gilberto (captain), Gallas, van Persie and Hleb all played a full 90 minutes for their respective nations which is very annoying, hopefully they don’t pick up any effects from that.

England lost 1-0 to France from a Ribery penalty in the game that saw David Beckham win his 100th cap for England. There’s been so much coverage about Beckham this week, which was a bit annoying, but you have to applaud him, it’s a fantastic achievement. A lot of people are saying he should call it 100 and retire but I’m certain he can still do a job for us. He always gives 100% and his pin-point accurate balls are vital. I hope Capello gives him the chance to carry on but I can see him fading out of the team.

Theo Walcott didn’t feature which was a bit rubbish, I was hoping he’d get a chance towards the end. Gallas was the only Arsenal player on the field, he thought it’d be funny to ask Beckham for his shirt at the end, However there are reports that he was just allowing him the privilege to keep his shirt.

Sagna missed out through injury, still nothing on Arsenal.com about it though, I’m hoping it’s not that bad because he’s a valuable player to us, we’ll find out in the next couple of days. Clichy is still waiting for his first full cap but I think I heard the commentator say he played a ‘France XI’ fixture the night before. Flamini spent the 90 minutes on the bench which has confused a few people but the French boss has explained that decision saying, “My job is not to please people or offer gifts. His time will come”.

There are no new fresh injuries to report so far, but I’m expecting some later. Any guesses? Anyone say Robin van Persie? Do I hear a Robin van Persie? I think we have a winner. No news yet but so far it looks like everyone has survived this round of friendlies.

That’s about it for today. There’ll be a load of news tomorrow ahead of Saturday’s game against Bolton so I’ll speak to you tomorrow evening. See ya.

We have to keep on fighting 26 March, 2008

It’s been a pretty shit weekend for Arsenal. Dreams of the title have been shattered and everyone’s a bit down in the dumps. We need to just get on with it though, we can’t give up. We need to keep playing because not only do we want to put the pressure on Man United, there’s still 2nd place to fight for.

We still have a really good chance of winning the title though. I was thinking about it yesterday while I was bored at work. It’s only going to take a couple of slip-ups from United, which is more than likely. I don’t think they are going to win every game until the end of the season, if they do then well they deserve to win the league. Gilberto’s reminded us we’re still in with a chance for both the Premiership and Champions League:

“We have a chance still in both competitions. A few weeks ago we were five points clear and now it is not a comfortable situation as there is only seven games left but we do have a chance. The most important thing is to win our own games. If we win our seven games then we have a chance but we cannot afford to slip up anymore.”

That’s the key thing, we just need to focus on our games, keep winning and then just see where that takes us. The fact that we’ve dropped off the pace a bit means there’s a bit of weight off our shoulders too, hopefully that will help us start winning again.

Gilberto also said he doesn’t know where his future lies at the moment, he says he’s been working hard to try and get in the team but they are playing so well it’s hard. I’d be surprised to see Gilberto still with us next season but you never know.

Gilberto will finally get the chance to play at Ashburton Grove tonight when Brazil play Sweden. Tickets are still on sale so pop down if you’ve got nothing to do tonight. I’m working this evening so I can’t go but it should be an alright game.

Gallas & Henry

England are playing France in Paris where we should see a few of our players and ex-Gunners in action. Hell, we might even see one of them in an England shirt! Theo Walcott is in the squad for the game and it’d be nice to see him get some action. Wenger says it’ll be a competitive game, I’m praying no one gets injured but it wouldn’t be surprising would it?

There’s not much else to talk about, it is International week at the end of the day. Thanks for reading.

Chelsea 2-1 Arsenal – 23/03/08 – (Premier League) 24 March, 2008

Oh dear. I’m never going to fucking Walkabout again to watch football. Not only did we lose, again, but the TVs cut out in the middle of the match, and when they got turned back on we were 2-1 down. I thought I might be able to break the unlucky Walkabout streak with a great result at Chelsea but no.

Our terrible league form goes on. We were 5 points clear of United and 9 points clear of Chelsea not so long ago. Now after 4 draws and a loss we’ve slumped down to 3rd now 6 points behind the impressive Manchester United. I have to hand it to them; they are a fucking good team, with so much quality in reserve too. They deserve to win the league. We played well and the beginning of the season but we’ve sort of been hanging on since them, getting the results. A goal scoring run from Adebayor helped us to gain a 5 point lead but those goals dried up and here we are.

We’re just not as good as them, I really wish Wenger would buy so we had great players on the bench too. I just don’t see it happening. Yesterday I was saying, ‘That’s it; we’re out of the title race. We’ve just lost the league.’ However, that’s not strictly true. We are still very much in it but with the way we’re playing, and with United winning every game it looks unlikely.

We still have to go to Old Trafford, if we can win there that’s 3 points reduced off the gap. Them one weekend where Man Utd lose and we win and we’re level on points again. It can all change quickly but it’s not looking good.

Right, the game. We started as I thought but not long into the game van Persie was pushed out wide to play Hleb behind Adebayor. It didn’t work in my opinion.

The first half was quite an even game. The game opened well and there were some chances for both sides but nothing really came of them. However in the 25th minute Drogba found himself clean through on goal after John Terry’s long kick forward. He beat Gallas to it but just as he got into the area the ball came off his knee and Almunia collected. Phew.

A couple of minutes later, we had a really good chance at the other end. Clichy’s cross got taken down in the area but neither Eboue or Adebayor could get enough on it to shoot goalwards.

Just before the whistle we had a fantastic chance from the first corner of the game. Fabregas took it and Toure headed it on to Gallas as the far post. He slid in but could only manage to hit the post. It was agonisingly close but he was flagged for offside anyway in the end. Very marginal though.

Chelsea had a few decent chances in the final few minutes but in the end it finished 0-0 at half time. It was a good first half with opportunities for both sides. It was bound to be a good second half and I think both fans were probably thinking they could win it.

The second 45 started well and you had to think a goal would come sometime. In the end we opened the scoring just before the hour through Sagna. It was another Cesc Fabregas corner; this time it was delivered into the near post and Sagna timed his run and header perfectly to slot it just inside the post. A great header, m=you might say it was a bit lucky though.

1-0 up and it was all looking good. I was confident. I thought we should still put Walcott on though; I thought he could make the difference on the break and get us another goal. Sagna went down injured and I was thinking this was the time for Theo. However Wenger chose the more defensive option and went for Diaby. However almost straight away Chelsea equalised. Drogba chested down a long ball forward and managed to get a powerful shot on it before a defender could dive in the way. Quick instincts from Drogba and it was 1-1. I bet Wenger wishes he brought Theo on now?

So he brought Walcott on a few minutes later for van Persie. 1-1. Come on Arsenal.

Then the TVs cut out. Everyone cheered sarcastically ‘Whayyyyy!’ I didn’t though, I went outside to try and get my mates back in, they went to the cashpoint but weren’t allowed re-entry for some stupid reason. I was talking to the bouncer when I got a text…

GOAL!: Chelsea 2-1 Arsenal. Anelka knocks a long ball to Drogba and the big man hooks it past Almunia (82)

I showed my mates the text and said, ‘Fuck this we’re leaving.’ I went inside to get my coat, TVs still off but I knew what had happened. I just wanted to get out of there before the TVs went back on and the Chelsea fans started celebrating. Just as I got to our table the Sky signal reconnected and they all went mental. I stormed out.

In the end the bar next door was showing the rest of the game so I decided to go in there for a bit just to see if we could equalise. We brought on Bendtner but nothing happened. It finished 2-1 and it felt pretty shit to be honest. I saw the replay of the goal, it was a quick free kick from near the half way line that Anelka nodded down and Drogba finished. Thought Almunia could’ve done better with the save but he made up for himself a few minutes later when he made a good save to deny Drogba his hat trick.

So that was it. Title race over? No, as I explained, we’re still in it but it’s going to take a lot of effort. We need to just carry on doing our stuff and just make sure that we are up there incase United slip up. There’s not point in giving up, lets just keep putting the pressure on them.

We need to end this bad run at Bolton next week though. If we don’t pick up three points there, for the sixth game in a row, Then it really is over, it’s up to Chelsea to challenge United.

Lets pick ourselves up and get on with out games. As I said, it’s Bolton next, build up to come this week. Thanks for reading.

“Oh Ashley Cole! He’s a fucking arsehole! He’s a fucking arsehole!”

That’s the general opinion from the English media at the moment and we’ve got the chance to rub it in tomorrow. Ashley Cole has gone from the heights of being a fans favourite at Arsenal, a young English defender, an Arsenal fan who made his way through the youth system. Now he’s right down in the dumps, a money-grabbing cunt who cheats on his wife, second choice at Chelsea to Wayne Bridge and now the most hated player in the league, not just by Arsenal fans.

He’s really fucked himself up and he deserves every bit of it. As a Gooner, I’ve loved watching him plummet to the scum he is. He could be playing tomorrow and I just think it would be perfect if we could just put the final nail in his coffin; He joined Chelsea at a time when they were a growing force and every player that moved there believed they would be joining the best club in the world and dominating Europe. That hasn’t been the case though and I think if we can beat Cole’s Chelsea tomorrow it’ll just show him what a stupid, stupid boy he’s been.

Tomorrow’s not just about Cole though. It’s about the Premier League title. Wenger reminded us yesterday that ‘Grand Slam Sunday’ won’t decide the championship, however it could definitely have an effect on the title race. If we were to beat Chelsea tomorrow and Torres sticks a couple past United then we’ll be joint top and the team in confidence. However if United carry on winning and Chelsea take the three points then we can almost count ourselves out of it.

We’ve drawn four in a row in the league and it’s not pretty. I think the main reason for this has been inspiration. When you face the likes of Wigan, it’s hard to focus on delivering a top performance. Whereas if you were playing AC Milan, the concentration would be on maximum and you know every player would put more than 100% of their efforts in.

Going to Stamford Bridge should hopefully inspire us to put on a good show. The players have fucked up in the last four games so they owe the fans a win. They need to show us that they’re still in there for the fight.

The team news is the same from the last game, no new injuries. It’s just Eduardo, Rosicky, Diaby and Denilson who are out so the team pretty much picks itself. You’d have to think we’ll go 4-4-2 with van Persie up front but he was pretty anonymous in the last game. Arsene will have been looking at his sharpness in training this week and hopefully he’s made an improvement.

We could go with just the one up top. Or maybe even play Hleb behind Adebayor depends how Arsene’s going to approach it. I don’t now what he’s thinking, I can’t read his mind. However I can guess that he’ll start Eboue ahead of Walcott…

Almunia
Sagna – Toure – Gallas (c) – Clich
Eboue – Fabregas – Flamini – Hleb
Adebayor – van Persie

I’d quite like Theo to start tomorrow. He’s great coming on from the bench, that impact is a massive part of his game. However we could do with his talent for the whole 90 minutes, not jus tthe final 15 or whatever. I’d like it if Theo starts the game but I wont be too fussed if we bring him on from the bench.

mathieuflamini.jpg

Flamini is going to be key tomorrow. He still hasn’t signed that new contract but Wenger says he’s completely committed every day despite the ongoing negotiations. Arsene says in that piece he hopes to get the deal signed next month. Once Matty puts pen to paper I’m going to be so relieved, until then though it’s a bit worrying. I’ve heard that he wants 80,000 a week! Completely breaking our wage structure, and of course if we was to get that then everyone else is going to want a pay rise. It’s a tough call for Wenger and the financial department.

It’s going to be two good games tomorrow. Liverpool vs. Man Utd is the early kick off, that starts at half one. We’ve got to hope our Champions League opponents can do something to stop United. Torres is in goal scoring form and I’m backing him to get us them a goal. I’m definitely going to be watching both games. I was thinking about going down to the 12 Pins to watch ‘Grand Slam Sunday’ but I’m just going to go to Walkabout in Watford. I’m hoping to break a run of bad results there, every time I’ve been we’ve lost so yeah…if we lose it’s my fault, sorry.

It’s gonna be massive, so make sure you’re watching. I’ll write up the match report on Monday, speak to you then.

Arsene

Hello. Having a good Friday? Yeah? Cool. Mine’s alright. Quite bored to be honest and can’t really be bothered to update the site. You’d think with ‘Grand Slam Sunday’ a couple of days away I’d be desperate to keep you updated, but no. There’s hardly any news about really for the game, nothing very inspiring anyway. Plus, I’m a little bit hungover you see and I can hardly be arsed to press these keys on th…

Suppose I’d better talk about something though. Being Friday, Arsene Wenger held a press conference today so there’s a few quotes from him. He says he wants to win on Sunday, which is promising; Arsene says that this game against Chelsea and next month’s against United are vital and if we were to win both of them we’d be in a fantastic position to take the title.

However, he also says that Sunday’s games are not decisive and we can’t get carried away if we win or completely depressed if we lose. Of course these games are going to make a difference but there are still plenty of games to go after this weekend.

Arsene also got the chance to say something that he hasn’t said in a while: There are no new injuries going into the Chelsea game. He also spoke about Rosicky’s hamstring injury. He says he’s making a slow recovery but it’s impossible to say when he might be back. He wants to play but all he can do is wait.

Djourou played his first game back from injury the other night in a reserve game against Pompey. I think he played central midfield in a 2-0 win for the young guns. So with him back we’ve now got a bit of back in defence at last. Kolo only came back recently and we’ve been looking thin there all season.

Theo Walcott got called up to the England squad for the friendly against France. He’s been scoring goals for the U21s but he’s been impressive for Arsenal recently which is why Capello has given him the nod. It would be good for him if he got to play but I see him warming the bench. What I like best though is that it’s Aaron Lennon he’s replaced in the squad. Marvellous.

Right that’s about all the blogging I can force out of myself today. Sorry. Tomorrow I’ll write a really good Grand Slam Sunday Preview I promise :D What do you think of the new redcurrant header by the way? I quite like it but I’m not sure, feedback please guys. Alright, speak to you tomorrow, have a Good Friday.

hleb.jpg

Hello again. How are we? Marvellous, good to see you. There isn’t any that interesting going on this week but there are quite a few little stories around so I’ll just right into it.

Firstly, a couple o our wide players have been linked with high profile moves away. I bet you all jumped off your seats earlier this week when you saw the headline – Barcelona interested in Eboue. It’s an incredible rumour, on so many levels. If it were to somehow go through then I’d feel quite relieved that he’s gone but at the same time I’d be rather confused as to what Barca are interested in him for…

One more worrying rumour though I saw today was that Hleb has been linked with a move to Inter Milan. The night before the AC Milan game he and his agent left the team hotel and it has been suggested that they went to meet representatives from Inter. Arsene was not happy about this one bit and we’ve been told he’s a bit pissed off about this.

However, they apparently just ‘went for an ice-cream’. You what? That is fucking mental. Some excuse ay? Of all of the things they could’ve said. Heh. Anyway, Inter have denied meeting Hleb and have also said that they’ve received no complaint of ‘tapping-up’ from Arsene. I’m not really too worried by these stories at the moment but if Alex does go to Inter Milan in the summer transfer window then you have to ask…what sort of ice cream was it then?

In other news, Robin van Persie says we have to win something this season. It would be a disaster to come away from this great season with nothing. If that did happen then we would’ve thrown the title away, no question about that. The Champions League is going to take some work but we’ve got a good chance. Robin says that we’ve played such good football that we deserve something. Well maybe if we stopped fucking drawing we could. We’re just going to have to sit back and watch but if we don’t win anything this year it’s going to be one very shit summer.

Gael Clichy’s looking forward to the Liverpool games but admits he would’ve rather had a foreign team in the quarter finals. It does kind of ruin the competition a bit when you draw someone from your own league; maybe the teams should still be seeded at this round? Who knows? However it’s just our fault that the Premier League is so strong these days. In England we have 4 really good teams, in Italy and Spain it’s only really about 2.

Liverpool always seem to play better in the Champions League but because we are English opposition you have to think whether they’ll play just like they do in the Premiership? I think they’ll still play with that Champions League attitude but I’m still not bothered than that. I’ve got no doubt in my mind that we are a better team than Liverpool and we can beat them if we play to our potential.

That’s about it/can be arsed to write tonight. Sorry I haven’t been very active with the updates this week, there are a number of reasons for that but I wont bore you. Tonight Man United are playing their game in hand against Bolton, they’re currently 2-0 up and it’s nearly half time so you have to think they’ll win there, no surprise. Chelsea are also playing Spurs tonight, I think it’s 2-1 to the Blues at the moment. Come on Tottenham you useless fucking twats.

Right I’m off. Going to design you a new header for the blog I think. Yeah why not, check back a bit later to have a look. See ya.

Arsenal 1-1 Middlesbrough – 17/03/08 – (Premier League) 17 March, 2008

Sorry about the late match report. I’ve been ill, picked up a bad case off ‘Thomasrosckiyitus’. Looked to have shaken it off tonight though but I’ve heard that this rare disease comes back in ‘waves’ every two to three weeks. So I should be ok for a little while anyway.

In all seriousness, if the blog doesn’t get updated much this week it’s because I’m in bed, dying.

On Saturday we played ‘Boro in a game that had 1-1 written all over it up to the game yet somehow we’re all praying that we wouldn’t make it 4 draws on the bounce. It’s really quite incredible. We just can’t seem to win at the moment. It’s been over two months since we’ve won in the league! For a team chasing the title that is terrible.

Draws against Birmingham, Villa, Wigan and ‘Boro have seen us fall back down into second with Man United even having the luxury of a game in hand. I was thinking, if we’d lost one of those games, I think that might’ve kicked our arses into gear a bit. Say if we lost against Villa (which we so nearly did), I’m pretty sure we would’ve beaten Wigan the following week. 1+1=2, but 0+3=3. And 3 is better than 2.

We started quite well on Saturday. We nearly went 1-0 up after 4 minutes. Adebayor found himself through in the box and stuck it away but the ref waved it offside. At this early stage in the game and not seeing the incident properly I wasn’t too fussed but the replays showed that the ball clearly came off a defender and it was a perfectly good goal. Some nonsense about van Persie intended to play it to Ade, fuck this offside bullshit, that rule really needs to sorted out.

A few minutes later Eboue’s cross hit the bar. It was the opening I was hoping for, we were going for the early goal and were showing no mercy. Eboue had a decent shot, Adebayor and Fabregas had good chances too. It looked like an Arsenal goal would be coming soon…so that’s exactly when Middlesbrough scored.

It was completely against in the run of play. In the 25th minute Schwarzer booted the ball up field, Tucay ran onto it down the left wing and squared it to Aliadiere who tapped it in the net.

I could not believe what I was watching. The same old story. I couldn’t believe it though. I just sat there with my head in my hands just wondering why. Just to rub it in, that goal was offside too. Typical.

The players probably couldn’t believe it either, it’s not like they aren’t used to it. They carried on pressuring though, a few decent chances but nothing really clinical and we went in a half time losing 1-0.

In the break Gareth Southgate quite obviously said, “Right, our new objective is to sit back and defend this one goal lead by any means necessary. The formation is now 6-3-1.” I’ve seen teams take a lead at Ashburton Grove and try defend it. However on Saturday it was so obvious it must’ve been quite embarrassing for the ‘Boro fans.

The second half continued with us going forward. ‘Boro were just sat back with 10 men in their box defending everything we could throw at them. With so many white shirts around, it was hard for us to make something decent happen and we were struggling to find that equaliser.

After an hour Wenger brought on Walcott and Bendtner. I was expecting Eboue to go off but he was moved to an attacking right back position and the other man to be replaced was van Persie; Robin didn’t have a great game on his return to The Grove looked fairly anonymous. Hope he gets his game back soon.

Bringing Theo on was always going to raise our game and his impact was obvious so obvious for all to see. He did more in his first 5 minutes on the field than Eboue had done in the whole game on that right wing.

Our first proper chance for a while came not long after those subs. Fabregas found himself one-on-one with the ‘keeper about 7 yards out with not a lot of time or space. In fact it was an incredibly similar chance to the one he had up in Wigan. Up there he just shot without much time to think and it went straight into the goalie, a similar outcome came of this attempt to.

Time ticked on and it was getting worrying. I was still quite sure we’d score the equaliser but I wanted us to win this fucking game. Draws aren’t good enough!

Fabregas hits the bar with a soft header on the edge of box. Better, but still not close enough!

In the 86th minute we finally scrambled the ball over the line. We won a corner, which Fabregas went over to take. I was watching Toure slowly make his way up the pitch, it looked like he was in two minds as to whether he should attack this corner. Anyway, he made it just in time for Cesc’s delivery and Kolo ran to meet the ball with the side of his head. With so many bodies in the box and Flamini trying to get a defining touch on the ball, the ‘keeper didn’t have a clue where it was going and we’d made it 1-1 at fucking last.

Far to late though, we did push for the second goal but we’d left the equaliser too late in the game. 10 minutes earlier and we might’ve had a chance. While we were searching for a winner, Clichy was brought down by a very careless challenge from Mido. It was a long ball coming over the top, Clichy went to head it but Mido just stuck a leg out and caught Gael badly on the head.

The ex-Tottenham man was shown a straight red for his clumsiness and Clichy was stretched off. He’s probably going to need stitches for that but I’d be incredibly surprised if he misses our next game, it’s nothing that should stop him playing.

So in the end it was 1-1. A game we really should’ve won but oh well, that just Arsenal for you at the moment. If it couldn’t get any worse we play Chelsea next. Hopefully we’ll be more up for that game though and produce something the fans can smile about. That Milan win seems a little while ago now. Build up to that one this week, I’m off back to bed. Speak to you tomorrow.

‘Boro Preview: Theo, Robin & Kolo match fit 14 March, 2008

Jeremie Aliadiere

We need to forget about the Champions League draw for the moment, we play in the Premier League tomorrow, which will be a massive game. We’ve drawn our last three games in the League and we need to get back to winning ways if we want to win this trophy.

We lost to Middlesbrough when we went to the Riverside earlier in the season. So we know that the wont be easy. Anything other than a win tomorrow and I’ll be hanging my head for the 4th successive game. Although a draw against ‘Boro wouldn’t really be the end of the world, the way we’re playing in the Premiership at the moment it would really lower our confidence.

The team news ahead of the game is quite good. Walcott & Eboue are back in the squad. Also, we saw van Persie and Toure return last week but Wenger says that this time they are fully match fit whereas last week they were a little behind. The leaves just Diaby, Rosicky and Eduardo out injured then, things are looking on the up.

For once Wenger’s got a few different options for the starting 11. Apart from Rosicky, we’re back to full strength! So it’s just really a decision of Eboue or Walcott on the right wing. I feel Arsene will go for Eboue, I know I’ve said this thousands of times but Walcott has such a great impact coming on as a sub it’s worth not starting him. With Toure back, Wenger has now got to choose whether to stick with the in-form Senderos, or put Toure straight back into the team. I’d go for Toure but I wouldn’t be worried if Big Phil made the 11.

So he’s how I see us lining up tomorrow:

Almunia
Sagna – Toure – Gallas (c) – Clichy
Eboue – Fabregas – Flamini – Hleb
Adebayor – van Persie

No real surprises there I don’t think. Hopefully Eboue can behave and just do his job on the wing and Toure will slot straight back in like he never left.

I’m sitting in a box for tomorrow’s game, I’ve never been into club level or a box before so it’ll be good to see what it’s like up there but I know I’ll still always prefer it in the stands! The tickets are from o2 from that competition my Dad entered, part of getting down to the finalist. It’s in the ‘o2 Blue Room’ whatever that means.

Going to have to leave early again I think, I have work to get back for. Maybe I’ll be able to sort out going to work a bit late…

The game kicks off at 5.15 and it’s live on Setanta Sports 1. However you’re following the game, do everything possible to cheer the boys on to victory. We really need three points tomorrow.

Thanks for reading.

So it’s Liverpool in the quarter finals of the Champions League. The draw was made this lunchtime and after beating the current European Champions in the last round we now face the five time winners. I would’ve preferred a European side in the draw to be honest, seeing as it’s the European Cup, but I’m not bothered. It means we’re going to have to play the Scoucers 3 times in a week in April. The dates are as follows and it was the news I was hoping praying for:

The first leg will take place at Emirates Stadium on Wednesday, April 2. The second leg will take place at Anfield on Tuesday, April 8. Kick-off for both games is 7.45pm (UK time).

Regular readers might remember me saying that I go Skiing on the 9th and I would’ve been in the air if our game was on April 9th; which would of course result in a mental breakdown. Thank God though that we’re playing on the Tuesday night.

I was hoping that we would play the 2nd leg at home because I could’ve then gone to both legs. I don’t think I’m going to make the trip to Anfield though, which is a shame. I could, technically, but it would be cutting it very fine and it probably wont be worth the stress to be honest. However, I am mental and I’m going to look at flight times after I’ve written this…

I’m pretty confident. I spoke to my Liverpool supporting mate straight after we were drawn and he sounded a bit nervous to be honest. We’re top of the league and I’m sure that they would’ve preferred an easier side. We knocked out AC Milan in the last round, which will fill us with confidence, however Liverpool knocked out Inter, which isn’t a bad feat either.

It’ll be a brilliant game anyway. I could carry on writing loads and loads of build up right now but I’m going to save it all for a couple of week’s time. The other draws were:

Quarter-Finals:

Arsenal v Liverpool
Roma v Manchester United
Schalke v Barcelona
Fenerbahce v Chelsea

Semi-Finals:

Arsenal or Liverpool v Fenerbahce or Chelsea
Schalke or Barcelona v Roma or Manchester United

So it looks like we could face Chelsea in the semi finals if we beat Liverpool. We owe them a bit of revenge from a few years ago when they narrowly beat us in the quarters. Also, it’s likely to be a Man United vs. Barca semi final, which could mean another Arsenal vs. Barcelona final. Bring it on. God I love the Champions League.

There is a bit of other news about today but it’s team news ahead of tomorrow’s game against ‘Boro; so I’ll save those stories for the match preview which I’ll write later. Until then.

Arsene wont buy in the summer. Again. 13 March, 2008

Wenger

I know March seems a strange time to be thinking about this summer’s transfer window but yesterday Arsene said that he won’t be bringing anyone in this year. I suppose we should all be getting used to this but it really does frustrate me. This year we went into the season with an incredibly thin squad, and we’ve paid the price with injuries. Surely that should tempt Arsene to buy? He’s what he said:

“I will keep faith [with them] because we have worked hard for what we have now.”

“We have money because we made money and we made money because we made the right decisions. I believe a football team is not about buying and selling. It is about building, patience, working together and going through a growing process. Also it is enjoyable now to see the team coming slowly up and see how well they can do.”

It’s strange the way Arsene thinks, it’s completely different to say a manager like Mourinho who doesn’t give two shits about how the club does financially, he just buys and buys until the squad is completely full. I think any Arsenal fan would agree that we need to buy this year though:

In the ‘keeper department Jens Lehmann is off, leaving us with just Almunia, Fabianski and Mannone. Now Almunia is good, Fabianski is ok but he is probably improving but Mannone is still a long way off the mark. We could do with another goalie but we could just about get away without one.

In defence we have a fantastic back 4, it’s just what’s behind that is what you need to think about. Senderos has proved that he’s worthy of a place, Song’s coming good and Djourou I’m not so confident about. At full back we’ve got Hoyte and Traore plus a few youngsters. Eboue can play there if he hasn’t left. So we can probably just about cope in defence if we don’t get to many injuries.

In centre midfield we used to be overflowing with players but for once we’re looking a bit thin I think. Fabregas and Flamini will be the first choice pairing next year; if Flamini stays, please God. Gilberto Silva will be leaving so we’ve only got Denilson who is an out and out centre midfielder in reserve. We will have Diaby and Song but I think Wenger prefers them as a winger and defender. I’d like us to sign a midfielder but it seems very unlikely

On the wings we’ve got Rosicky (who just can’t stay fit and it’s just like not having him at all) and Hleb, who aren’t actually wingers but they do the job. Then there’s Emmanuel Eboue who might leave, Diaby and of course Carlos Vela will be coming in this summer. We also have a few strikers that can play there, Walcott does well on the right, van Persie has played there a few times and Eduardo played on the left a lot this year but he wont be available until Christmas now. Wenger will look at that thinking we have lots of players but it is all a bit mix and match.

Up front we have Adebayor, van Persie (if he can stay injury free next season), Eduardo (will be out for most of the season), Bendtner and Walcott. Then there is Hleb who can play the second striker and I think Vela can play there too. If van Persie gets injured again though we’ll have to play Walcott or Bendtner with Adebayor, which is hardly convincing. Remember we want a team here that should be able to win the league.

In conclusion we’ve got lots of players that can play in different roles, and Wenger would look at what’s above and think, “Yeah, we’ve got loads of players.” We could really do with the luxury of another ‘keeper, midfielder, a proper winger and maybe even a striker! It won’t happen though. We’re so unlucky with injuries, that’s why I think we should buy, but Wenger knows, Wenger knows.

It’s the Champions League draw tomorrow. I can’t wait! I’ll speak to you tomorrow after the draw has been made. Laters.

Time to go into Title Chase Mode. 11 March, 2008

Yep. Now we have to actually kick our arse in gear. We were five points clear not so long ago and it all seemed lovely and nice but then we’ve drawn three in a row and it’s not quite so pretty. We’re still top, yes, but Man United can go a point clear of us if when they win their game in hand at Bolton.

A lot of these players wont be used to the pressures of a title race. I think they need to realise how well they must perform at this stage. Every single game should be like a cup final, and played with that spirit and determination. I know it’s hard, but you have to take that atmosphere from playing at the San Siro in a knockout game, and apply that to the league games against Wigan, ‘Boro and Bolton etc.

I don’t know how you do that, but you just have to. Maybe if the players look at the table as they walk out onto the pitch, they will realise the importance of every single game from here on.

I’m sure they know all this already, but you have to admit that the performances have been lacking recently. As I said, the team we up for the game against AC Milan, no surprise. So why can’t they play like that every week?

This image from Le Grove (a good blog by the way, check it out if you haven’t already) shows our title run in with Man United. We both have to go to Stamford Bridge, we’ve both got Derby away, we’ll both be entertaining Liverpool and of course we go up to Old Trafford in April.

It’s going to be an exiting run in, that’s for sure. And we’ve seen first hand how quickly a 5 point lead can be lost. It won’t be over, until it’s over.

r-v-p.jpg

We’ve got a secret weapon now though…Robin van Persie is back. He might just be that extra element we need to keep 1st place. If Adebayor can carry on scoring and Robin starts finding the net again, we’re in business.

Flamini’s ready for a title fight. You’d imagine he would be. He’s the sort of play that will keep going for the entire 90 minutes doing his part for the team. He’s the one that can inspire our players to pick themselves up if we concede and he’s the won that can win the ball back and start an attack. He’ll never stop, even if we’re 3-0 up. I’m pretty sure that if we subbed him off he’s go straight into the dressing room and carry on playing football.

Wenger admits we’re going through a bad patch too. What’s important though is we’re not losing games, only drawing. 3 points from three games is better than no points from three games.

Let’s hope this title-race-ambition starts on Saturday afternoon against ‘Boro. Thanks for reading.

Jesus Christ. That’s 3 draws in a row now; we haven’t won in a month! We were 5 points clear not so long ago and everything looked great but now look where we are. Man United can go a point ahead of us now if they win their game in hand.

We started with the team I thought it’d be, there was really no other option. Toure, Song and van Persie all returned from their injuries to make the bench, but you have to wonder if they were they to just make up the numbers or whether they were actually fit.

We got off to a flying start and caught Wigan out early. Adebayor was sent clean through on goal but Kirkland came rushing out to narrow Adebayor down and he made a great save on the edge of the box.

It would turn out to be our best chance of the game, however with such a promising start I thought it wouldn’t be long until a goal came. How wrong I was.

The pitch was terrible up in Wigan, the rugby lines were still clearly visible on the pitch but it was still not a surface fit for that sport. A few minutes after Adebayor’s chance, Bendtner got free down the left hand side of the box and was getting ready to square the ball in when he completely missed the ball with a massive air-shot. The replay showed that the ball was bobbling around all over the place thanks to the pitch making it impossible for Nick to strike the ball.

The opening 10 minutes or so weren’t bad, we hadn’t got an early goal but we looked on course to break Kirkland’s clean sheet.

However half time came and it was still 0-0. We’d had most of the possession but we couldn’t really work an opening. Wigan had a couple of chances of their own but you had to say we were on top. We still had another half to score thought so I wasn’t too worried at this point.

We nearly scored early in the second half; a couple of goalmouth scrambles were cleared and Wigan were safe again. The game was becoming increasingly frustrating to watch. As time ticked on I was just hanging on to that slip belief that we could get that late goal.

After 66 minutes Wenger decided we needed a change. Robin van Persie got his first League appearance since God knows how long ago, he came on for an uninspiring Bendtner. Nick has a habit of scoring late, important goals though but Arsene decided to put van Persie on anyway. Kolo Toure also returned from injury replacing Gilberto Silva who has completely had it. It’s really sad to see a player play so badly, a player that most of the Arsenal fans loved. He looks past it, a great contrast from the performances he saw last year. Toure came on at right midfield, which shows the extent of our problems.

The substitutions didn’t really change anything, I thought the introduction of van Persie might inspire some decent football but nothing happened. Robin had a decent chance with a free kick, but it was smashed over the bar.

In the last few minutes Fabregas found himself free in the box, 6 yards out but Kirkland reacted quickly stopping Cesc from slotting the ball underneath him.

At the whistle it ended up a very disappointing 0-0. I asked before the game for a ‘San Siro performance’ but it was nowhere near that quality yesterday; you have to blame it on the Champions League hangover I guess. Yesterday was the day we came crashing down to earth and we’re really going to have to work at our league form. It looks like that match at Old Trafford next month will be a decisive one.

Arsene’s got a week to sort the players out before we face Middlesbrough this weekend. If we don’t win that then we’re really on a bad run. ‘Boro got outclassed by Cardiff this weekend so we should really win, shouldn’t we? Build up to come this week.

Wigan Preview: Another San Siro Performance Please 8 March, 2008

fabregas-milan.jpg

After a massive night in the San Siro earlier in the week, we now have to travel up to cold and wet Wigan in the Premier League. It’s one hell of a scenery change, but that shouldn’t mean we change our game. We want another great performance to continue our title chase and put the pressure on Manchester United and Chelsea who both got knocked out the FA Cup today. Ha! Yes, Chelsea were playing Barnsley.

So we’ve got an opportunity to go 4 points clear tomorrow, Man United and Chelsea will have a game in hand but it will still put pressure on the to perform.

The squad’s a little thin for tomorrow’s game. Diaby, Denilson and Walcott are the latest casualties meaning Fabregas will probably have to play right wing. He’s not bad there, but we’ll miss him in the middle. He proved on Tuesday night that he is an important cog in our midfield machine so hopefully it wont be so bad if we shift him out to the right.

There are a few options for tomorrow’s first 11 but here’s my best guess:

Almunia
Sagna – Senderos – Gallas (c) – Clichy
Fabregas – Gilberto – Flamini – Hleb
Adebayor – Bendtner

We could maybe start Hoyte on the right wing; I don’t think that’s a bad shout. The Gilberto and Flamini pairing in the middle might be a little defensive. We’ll just have to wait and see what Wenger does, I’m sure he’ll sort it out.

It’s not going to be easy going up to the JJB tomorrow, the pitch is going to be shit so I think it’s going to be more of a battle than a skilful display. With Bendtner and Ade upfront we’ve got two targets to hoof long balls at so maybe we might get away without doing all the intricate passes we’re used to.

In recent times, it’s taken a late goal from us to take the points; I think we might need another one tomorrow. I see it being a one or two nil win with us dominating the game but Wigan keeping it 0-0 for most of the match. Hopefully though, we just completely outclass them and it’s a walk in the park.

Kick off tomorrow is at 4 and it’s on Sky Sports. I’m not going, wish I was though, might ask some people if there are any spares about. I’ll speak to you with the match report soon, until then.

More injuries! 7 March, 2008

walcott-away.jpg

I was asked yesterday if there was any injuries after the Milan game, my answer was, “Probably, yeah. It wouldn’t surprise me.” Of course there were! Diaby picked up a problem after his 90 minutes in Milan. Also, there was a friendly versus Colorado Rapids yesterday at the training ground in which Walcott and Denilson got injured. Just perfect. With Eboue suspended that leaves us with very, very few wide players.

There were quite a few first team players risked in this friendly yesterday. Robin van Persie played an hour without feeling any effects from his injury, which was good. Denilson came off with a hamstring strain and Walcott complained after the game with a thigh problem.

I think it’s a bit silly risking players when our squad is so thin as it is. It’s crazy. We’ve paid the price for that now and we’ll have to field an irregular side against Wigan. Hleb will be on one win, but we’ll have to probably lose Fabregas from the middle and play him out wide. Either him or a full back will have to play the or maybe even Bendtner, I don’t know!

Rosicky is still 10+ days away. However saying that, you know once he’s back he’ll just be out again. It’s incredibly frustrating all these muscle problems he picks up. Arseblogger pointed out in today’s Arsecast that we can’t really rely on him anymore and maybe Wenger might have to think about his future at Arsenal. He’s a great player, but only for about four games before he gets injured again, you need stability in the first 11 and with him coming in and out it’s just not working.

A lot of our injured players are very close to returning though. With the exception of Eduardo obviously everyone could be back in about two weeks. I think Toure might be back next week, van Persie was on the bench in Milan so he can’t be far off and Rosicky will be back in a fortnight, Diaby shouldn’t be too long out hopefully, I think Song’s fit now and Djourou’s meant to be back too. As for Denilson well we’ll just have to see, he could be a couple of weeks plus and Walcott will maybe miss a week or so.

I was thinking today though, we’re still top of the league even after all these injures we’ve had this season. Imagine where we’d be with a fit squad. Van Persie started the season really well but then he got that injury, however with him coming back soon, that could be our added ingredient that will help us in the title run in. I’m excited about van Persie’s return; I really think he can make the difference in these last couple of months.

There are loads of other ‘bits’ of news on Arsenal.com today, but nothing very important other than those injuries. Wenger says he wants to avoid the English teams in the Champions League draw and he says that Premiership clubs could rule Europe in the future.

There was also this headline: Wenger – Trophies are not everything to me. Which worried me a little bit but he’s talking about how he wants people to respect Arsenal for the way that they play and that not always the best team wins the cups.

Think that’s about it for today. Oh yeah, my Dad’s photo didn’t win the competition. No Opus for me then. It was the kid holding the ticket that won. Thanks to everyone who voted though, would’ve been really good if he’d won but oh well. Cheers anyway though, it means a lot.

Thanks for reading.

That was amazing. Without a doubt, the best trip I have ever been on and probably the best game I’ve ever been to. It’s now Thursday morning and still can’t speak from celebrating; I’m starting to get worried! Sorry I didn’t report anything last night, I was fucking knackered. I’ve got work in an hour, I really cant be arsed with it but I suppose you lot want to know what I got up to before I leave.

Well it all started at 6:00am, Monday morning in London City Airport, we were really early for our flight so we went to the bar and had a pint watching the sunrise over the Thames. Nice. We got to Malpensa Airport near Milan about half 12 local time and got the bus into the city centre.

Once we made it to hotel, there was no time for messing around, we had a quick beer in the hotel bar and decided we were going to jump on a bus that was apparently heading towards the San Siro. My mate’s a Milan fan and he’s never been to see his team before so he was really looking forward to getting to the ground, but I was pretty excited too. It’s one of the best grounds in Europe and we would be playing there tomorrow night.

After a very confused walk through the streets of North-Eastern Milan we finally saw the top of the stadium through some trees. We went round the corner, past the buildings and there she was, the San Siro. It looked fucking massive, and when we finally got up to the stadium it looked even bigger.

san-siro-outside.jpg

Going to Ashburton Grove every week, I’m used to big stadiums but this was a beast. I was thinking, ‘I’m not looking forward to walking to the top of that tomorrow night’. You see those big spirals; you have to walk up them to the top.

We decided to go look round the museum and have a stadium tour. In the museum there were a couple of Champions League Trophies and loads of memorable shirts and programmes from Inter and AC Milan games. Plus there were a few really old shirts, which I thought were quite good to see.

Then we went on the tour. We went straight down to pitch level, which was really good. There was a glass door that was like being at pitch level and then I went and stood right behind the Arsenal bench.

san-siro-inside.jpg

The ground looked even bigger from inside and it had really kicked in now that it’s AC Milan vs. Arsenal tomorrow night. If you look at the top left of that picture above, the 8,000 Arsenal fans were sitting in the 3rd tier behind that netting if you can see it. It looked a long way away from down near the pitch.

Then we went inside to the dressing rooms and press area, she wouldn’t show us the Arsenal dressing room insisting it was very boring even though the whole tour group was Gooners. The home dressing rooms were quite small, and nowhere near as nice as the Ashburton Grove one I saw a couple of weeks ago. The AC Milan dressing room had a massive light up crest in the middle which was a sort of table and racing style seats with plasma TVs above each chair which they put the player’s name and number on, a bit over the top but it seemed to suit them.

After the tour we went for the shop for a bit where I got my game-scarf, went for a pint and a pack of crisps because we still hadn’t eaten and decided to jump on this tram thinking it was going in the general direction of the town centre so we could get some dinner. We ended up somewhere a bit more busy, with some shops and cafes which was a good sign but we still didn’t have a clue where we were. Eventually we found a tube station and got that into the Duomo town square.

This is where the big Cathedral and shopping arcade is, like what you see on Milan postcards. Loads of little cafes but I swear there are no bars anywhere in Milan! We found a nice little restaurant, had a pizza, and then set off to try find some sort of a bar where there might be some Gooners.

We ended up in another little cafe after a very eccentric Italian waiter persuaded us to have a beer. Then he brought out all these little dishes for us as well! Shame we’d just eaten but he seemed determined to make us feel welcome/spend all our Euros on beer there. We started talking to these other Arsenal fans and we decided we should ask a taxi driver where a pub is/where the football fans are.

He said he knew a good place and we took his word and jumped in. We ended up in this Irish bar in the south of the city. Good, we’d finally found a pub! However we were the only English people in there, never mind Arsenal fans and after a little while we gave up. I was tired anyway so I thought we’d go back to the hotel.

We woke up early the morning of the game, had a beer for the road at the Hotel and our plan was to head to the Duomo sq. for lunch and maybe there’d be some Arsenal fans there. On our way to the station I bumped into some mates and had lunch with them.

We made it into the city centre about 2ish and the Duomo was packed with Gooners singing. It was brilliant, this it what I’d come for. Finally we’d found the Arsenal fans!

We stayed there all day until it was time to head down to the game. It was a great atmosphere around there. Everyone was singing but there was no trouble or anything like that. A group of Milan fans gathered across from the Gooners and did a bit of chanting but they left after about an hour. They gave us a few chants every now and again but the Arsenal fans were just non-stop singing. A few people decided it would be a good idea to go and get some Inter Milan flags from the stalls nearby which was quite funny.

There were a few policemen in riot gear just standing by, encase anything kicked off, but it was all calm and friendly. The policemen were taking photos of the crazy English fans and everything was all in good spirit.

After a few pints litres, it was finally time to head down to the San Siro.

The underground was packed with Gooners, still with pints in hands, singing all the way to our stop. We got out and then the police said we would have to wait for this bus that would take us over to our end of the ground. It finally turned up and it was like being a caged animal but it was alright. We were singing, jumping and banging all the way to the stadium but the driver didn’t care. “We’re the front end, we’re the front end, we’re the front end of the bus!” There were a few idiots on there who started singing racist songs but they were just ignored.

We got through the crowd, through the turnstile and then we had to scale the giant spirals to the 3rd tier. We finally made it up there with about 15 minutes to go until the match started. No one pays attention to seat numbers at these sort of away games and just goes anywhere. In the end I was sitting at the bottom of some stairs, which was about half way up our tier and pretty much in the middle. This was my view:

san-sio-pitch.jpg

It was the team I expected with Hleb playing behind Adebayor. I’m not going to bother doing a match report because you’ve probably all read one by now and I’ve written enough crap already. It was a good game though; both sides were getting a fair amount of the ball and making a few chances. However it didn’t really seem that tense to me, it was just like two good footballing sides doing their stuff.

At half time I was feeling good about the game. It was still 0-0 but I thought that if you had pick a side – we dominated the first half. Fabregas had hit the bar and we were unlucky not to get a free kick on the edge of the box; the terrible referee gave Hleb a yellow card for apparently diving.

The second half continued pretty much the same. It was a good game but it looked like it was heading for another stalemate. It was starting to get a bit nail biting and I has starting to lose my nerve, I couldn’t sit still and I was constantly shouting at the referee for stupid free kicks and offsides that were nowhere near.

With 20 minutes to go, Eboue was taken off for Walcott. Eboue was ineffective again, Diaby on the other side wasn’t having the best game but he was trying and got into space a couple of times. Theo’s introduction was always going to have an impact on the game and it seemed to liven us up a bit.

The game was coming towards the end now, and I was thinking about the possibility of an incredibly nervous extra time and penalties, when this happened:

fabegas-gattuso.jpg

YEaSSSSSSSSASHHShshajsfhkdhfgkldkfbudggnf!!!! I went fucking mental! Fabregas made some space about 30 yards out and tried his luck with a shot. It wasn’t hit incredibly hard but it was perfectly accurate and I watched it slowly go into the bottom left corner out of Kalac’s reach. Everyone around me was going crazy, there was no way Milan were going to get two goals in the time left. I saw my mate just sitting down on the steps with his head in his hands. I felt a bit bad but someone had to lose!

Two minutes into injury time Adebayor sealed it. Walcott has to take the credit though; he took up the ball on the right, beat his man and put a ball in along the floor for Ade to tap in unmarked at the far post. We went mental again, I’m surprised I didn’t fall down the flight of stairs next to me.

san-siro-fans.jpg

The final whistle went and we were through to the quarter finals. The first English team to ever beat AC Milan in the San Siro and what a victory it was. I’m sure all of the Arsenal supporters there will never forget this night, this is up there with the Champions League wins against Real Madrid and Juventus.

There was no doubt that we weren’t worthy winners, after the game the once again anonymous ‘Kaka said we deserved to go through and Cesc Fabregas said that goal was the best moment of his career. You never know what can happen if you just shoot!

After the game we were held in the stadium for an hour after kick off, and remember they’re an hour ahead over there. They stuck us a DVD on the big screens at least. We didn’t get out until about half 11, I was thinking of going to the bar back in the Duomo square but when I saw the bus that went back to the hotel we thought we’d better go back. I was knackered anyway and probably would’ve never found our way home had we continued on the litres of beer. We had a beer in the hotel as they had the game showing on the TV there. It was only the last 15 minutes, but that was alright haha.

In the morning I discovered that I’d completely lost my voice from celebrating and singing. I couldn’t speak at all most of yesterday; my mate even had to answer the phone when my Da called and tell the air hostess what I wanted to drink on the plane. It’s still really bad now even though we scored about 38 hours ago. I’m a bit worried that I might have shouted so loud I’ve fucked my vocal chords up. Oh well it’ll be worth it.

I’m back home now and I’ve looked through all the great photos from the night, there are some brilliant ones out there of Fabregas celebrating. It was an incredible trip, not a bad one for my first European away game anyway! I’ll never forget it. This was a landmark night for this young Arsenal side, to beat the champions of Europe in their own back yard and I was there to witness it.

The draw for the next round is on the 14th March and the 1st leg will be played on the 1st or 2nd April and the second will be on the 8th or 9th. I’m desperately praying that the second leg is on the 8th, because on the 9th I’m flying to America to go skiing that afternoon and I would have no way of following the game. It would be an absolute nightmare for me. I’m just begging that we will be playing on the 8th.

Next up is Wigan away, we need to win there. I’m sure Wenger will work out how to channel these high spirits and confidence into the league. Come on you Arsenal! Thanks for reading.

Excited isn’t the word. I’ve got to get up in 5 hours to start my journey to Milan and I’m still up getting any late team news and writing this early preview for you guys. When you read this though, I’ll be just boarding my plane into Milan, I’ve put a timer on this so it’ll come out in the morning. Wow, you guys are all like in the future, what’s Monday like? Wow.

Anyway, it’s the second leg and it’s all perfectly balanced at 0-0 from the first leg. We should be 1-0 up at this point if it weren’t for a certain crossbar but I’m not too bothered; If Milan were 1-0 down I think they would be more up for this than at 0-0.

They have to defend, but at the same time they need to score. If we get a goal tomorrow night then they’re in trouble. However saying that, we need to score too, but because it’s away that goal would be so much more important. Both teams will be cautious, yet dangerous at the same time, it’s set up to be a great game.

We were the better team in the first leg, I don’t think I’m being bias there. We were very unlucky to not get a goal at Ashburton Grove and I suppose Milan might feel a bit lucky at not conceding. They know that we will be a threat, and a goal would be a big blow. If they score first, it doesn’t really matter, we still have to score anyway as a score-draw would take us through.

I’m quietly confident to be honest with you. We’ve produced on the big stage before and I believe we can do it again. The score? I seriously have no idea, it could actually be anything. If we go a goal or two up Milan will have to attack and we could score more on the break. Or, Milan could completely out-class us and teach us a lesson. I think at this point, the draw is the best bet though.

If we can get a goal at the San Siro, that would be amazing. We’re not going to go all guns blazing though, we particularly want to concede either; but as I mentioned earlier, if we went 1-0 down early on it wouldn’t really change our game plan.

The team news is quite good, no new injuries to report. Eboue is back from the weekend, Diaby is back as you know, Toure might be back, I think Djourou is fit again and van Persie might even travel to Milan:

“At the moment we need to get our players back. We have Tomas Rosicky and Robin van Persie who are out and in the context of today you would like to have those players with you and hopefully we can get them back very quickly.”

“He (Van Persie) might be in squad for Tuesday but certainly won’t start. We will assess him on Monday morning.”

I do hope that Arsene doesn’t rush Robin back if he’s not ready but he’s promised he won’t, so I have faith in him. Obviously, it’s going to be a boost if Robin makes the squad. He lacks match practice but if we need someone to bring off the bench to create something, who better than van Persie?

It’s a bit early yet to start guessing the team but here’s what I’d say at the moment:

Almunia
Sagna – Senderos – Gallas (c) – Clichy
Eboue – Fabregas – Flamini – Diaby
Hleb
Adebayor

I’ve gone for Eboue over Theo because, if he’s not an idiot, Eboue will be better defensively and he has the more experience for a game like this. However, I’ve mainly chosen the Ivory Coast winger due to the fact that Walcott has an incredible impact as a substitute, and against a tiring Milan defence he could be really dangerous.

On the left it’d have to be Diaby, hopefully he’ll be a bit more inspired than he was at the weekend. I’ve have Hleb in the middle because it gives us the security of an almost 4-5-1 formation but he’s got the creativity and trickery up front that we’ll need to weave a goal. Adebayor will be the target man up top and what a fucking incredible time it would be for him to grab his first European goal in an Arsenal shirt.

senderos-kaka.jpg

As for Milan, well they’ve got a few injuries to worry about. ‘Kaka is a doubt, there was a story going round earlier that he’s definitely going to miss it but it seemed a bit dodgy to say that so early. He, Nesta and Pirlo all missed their game at the weekend. That either mean s they weren’t being risked or that they needed that time to try and recover for the Arsenal game. However Seedorf picked up a muscle problem in that game and he’s definitely going to miss the 2nd leg.

Before the first leg there were these stories about the top Milan players being injured but they all played in the end so I’m not really paying much attention to these. We’ll just see on the night who turns up. If ‘Kaka misses the game, that’s a bonus because he’s really fucking good but I’m not too bothered, Senderos owned him in the first leg.

I’m so excited about this game. It’s still ages away but I can’t stop thinking about it. In fact I’ve actually been thinking about my trip to Milan since December when I booked it. It’s my first European away game, I did go to Paris but I didn’t have a ticket.

People have said to me, “Won’t you be pissed off you’ve spent all that money going to Milan if Arsenal get knocked out?” My answer is a firm no. It’s still going to be a brilliant trip going to one of the best stadiums in the world, witnessing two of the best footballing teams ever and it’s just generally going to be a good laugh. Hopefully I’m not making you a bit jealous! If you’re thinking about booking a cheeky flight out there, I know for definite there’s going to be a few spares knocking a bout so I say, go for it!

I better go and try get some sleep now but I’ll speak to you on Wednesday night and tell you all about my trip. Until then Gooners.

bendtner-theo-sagna.jpg

Well thank fuck for that. Bendtner’s last minute goal allowed us to grab a point from a game where we probably didn’t deserve it. I’ve only just seen the goal, I had to leave early to go to work. Felt like a right Judas walking out with 82 minutes gone but I left it as long as I could, in the end I got to work just two minutes late.

The team was on the one I predicted, Diaby getting a start after returning from injury and Walcott partnering Adebayor. However we soon switched it around putting Theo on the wing and Hleb was the second striker.

We started reasonably well, we looked sharp and promising. Walcott had the best chance after 7 minutes when he stole some space and fired a shot towards goal but Carson was equal to it. The Aston Villa ‘keeper had a fantastic day, he made four or five good saves to keep them in it. It’s so frustrating watching all these goalies come to Ashburton Grove, get inspired by the surroundings and have the game of their lives. Bloody annoying.

Villa were doing alright at the other end too, it was a fairly even game in the opening minutes, both sides had some decent chances. Agbonlahor went clean through with just Almunia to beat, I was saying, “This is a goal, 1-0.” However William Gallas didn’t give up and he managed to get back and make the tackle.

They did take the lead after 27 minutes though. Agbonlahor had the ball out on the left and fizzed a ball low into the box. Senderos tried to clear it at the near post but he put the ball just inside the post with Almunia left stranded. You can’t really blame Big Phil for the goal but I’m sure he didn’t enjoy it.

I was expecting Villa to score so it wasn’t a massive shock, but at least we had an hour of football to do something about it. We didn’t do a lot in the remainder of the first half, that goal shocked the team a bit I think and Villa were on a high. The visitors had the better of the first half and a couple more chances before the break. We needed to come out with a different attitude.

Arsene sorted them out at half time and we came out with ambition and we attacked straight from the kick off, Walcott had a decent shot saved. We were passing and moving like anything and I was reminded of the game last weekend when we came out well in the second half and scored twice. That wasn’t the case yesterday, we soon lost that spark and it was more urgency and panic football than lovely and skilful.

There was 40 minutes left on the clock when I started to get worried. I was begging Wenger to make a bold change and bring Bendtner on early. 10 minutes later he did, Diaby came off. He didn’t have the best game yesterday; it was obvious who needed to be taken off.

We were having a lot of the ball towards the end of the game, however Villa were defending with 10 men, literally, and we couldn’t break them down. I was thinking ‘We have to score we have to score we have to score’ over and over. All this pressure had to be made to count. My anxiety was intensified by watching the clock tick away, I must have looked at the clock every 10 seconds.

Not only did it mean that our chance to get any points was slowly disappearing, I also knew that I really had to leave, as much as I didn’t want to. In the end it took Walcott to go clean through in the box and miss for me to go ‘Oh fuck it!’ and I got up and left.

I felt so embarrassed walking up those steps with the game going on around me. Whenever I see people leaving early like I was yesterday I don’t like it. I think why have they so urgently got to go? Well I’ve realised maybe they have got places to be, places to go or whatever. I had the choice of either not going yesterday, or just leaving 10 minutes early. I think I know what you would’ve all done.

As I walked to the station I kept my ears fully alert for a sign of anything that might be happening inside the stadium, but nothing. Along my walk I looked through the pub’s windows to check the score. Still 1-0, fuck. However when I just got to the station, a London Underground guy goes, “It’s 1-1, they just equalised in the last minute.” I replied, “Are you joking?” I was convinced he was winding me up but he spoke the truth and it was good! I got the goal confirmed soon after by text message and my journey home was slightly less shit.

9 days ago we were 5 points clear at the top of the league, now the gap is only one point. Last weekend we lost the chance to win in the last minute, this weekend we grabbed a point in the last minute.

Next up it’s AC Milan in the Champions League. I’m flying out to Italy early tomorrow morning so the match preview will have to be done tonight, I might time it so it publishes tomorrow though. Right, got to go, thanks for reading.
