Hleb

It has been confirmed by his agent that Alex Hleb will be leaving Arsenal this summer. Whoop-ti-fucking-do. He’s just said he’s decided to go, talks are in place and the deal will be announced next week:

I can officially confirm that a short time ago Alexander decided that he will leave Arsenal and join another club. Of course Arsenal and Arsene wanted him to stay but they have accepted the player’s choice.

I can’t tell you anything about where he will be playing yet. Talks are under way, and I don’t have the right to make them public. I think that the issue of his new club will be clarified in the next few days.”

Alex has spent three good seasons at Arsenal and he wasn’t sure he could maintain the same level that he has been showing if he stayed. It’s also true that he felt uncomfortable off the field. Alexander wants a change of scene. That’s had a large part to play in his decision.

Basically, if you can’t be arsed to read that, it’s a load of bollocks. If you want to know what I think, I reckon he just realised he can get more money away from Arsenal, his mate Flamini has done it so Hleb’s fucking off too.

I would much rather the agent just tell the truth and go:

Well, Alex has become a greedy cunt and is gonna leave Arsenal so he can get more money. Maybe Inter, maybe Real Madrid; he doesn’t really mind because he’s never going to care about the team he’s playing for, just the pay-slip.

He’s not unsettled in London, in fact he had a great time at Arsenal with Rosicky, Fabregas and Flamini but he doesn’t give a shit anymore and wants to go where he can shove as much ice cream as possible down his greedy little mouth

You can tell I’m not bitter. I’ve never really liked Hleb to be honest though. Right from the off, when he picked the no.13 shirt, I thought hang on, something’s not right here. At the beginning of this season though, I did start to warm to him. He was a vital part of that side that made such a good start to the campaign and he was finally starting to look like a decent player.

However I still had my reservations, and shortly he went back to the same old Hleb. Fair enough, he was playing he preferred position behind the striker, and he excelled there, so when he was moved back to the wing he was upset. But, he was given plenty more chances in that role over the season but he never recaptured that form he showed in August and September.

This Arsenal side is going though some big changes this summer. That’s half of Arsene’s first choice midfield gone now. We have Vela coming in, and I’ve heard that the Nasri deal is all sorted; we’re just waiting for an announcement. So it’ll be a different Arsenal side come August, lets just hope we can still play the same and Arsene gets them to settle in quickly.

Nothing official has come out about Hleb though. Expect that next week. Thanks for reading.

I find it exrordinary the amount of gooners now saying that hleb is basically a shit player. Hleb was always an enormously talented player with a magical 1st touch and exceptional dribbling abilty, for anyone who doubts that just watch the highlights of virtually any game in the 1st half of the season, he was nothing short of brilliant, on a par with and perhaps superior to Cesc.
Yes he faded in the second half of the season (who didnt) and didnt score enough, but it doesnt change the fact that we have lost a very important part of our team. yes he is replacable, but nasri is 20 yrs old and new to the prem, so dont expect too much too fast.
Im disappointed hes decided to leave, with the upside being that if inter, real and barca are all genuinely interested we should recieve a handsome fee (15mill +) which would pay for nasri and then some.
After Nasri we need a big centre back (not sure wenger will buy one though, he rates senderos) as well as a big, physical dm (id love to see yaya toure come, but would be v expensive) and maybe another winger (rosicky, vela, walcott and nasri should suffice though)

6. Lukas Binder - 24 May, 2008

Hleb was never bought to shoot goals, that’s not what he’s about. I think he’s a brilliant player and I’m sad to see him go but your obviosly right he’s dealing it totally wrong! The thing about the agent and the truth was hilarious…loved it!

7. Jamesl - 24 May, 2008

At last someone is talking sense. I agree that Hleb is a money grabbing shit, BUT, he was brilliant when in his chosen position and raised Fabregas’ game. I think he can be replaced, but it is a step backwards as it will take time.

8. LEON - 24 May, 2008

ITS ALL VERY WELL HAVING GOOD DRIBLING ABILITY AND GOOD PASSING ABILITY, BUT AS AN ATTCKING MIDFIELDER YOU MUST HAVE ABILITY TO SCORE GOALS AND CERTAIN AMOUNT OF ASISTS. WE HAVE HAD ALOT OF UPFRUNT WE NEEDED THE LIKES OF HLEB AND WILCOT TO SCORE GOALS THAT DID NOT HAPPEN. IF WILCAT WAS PLAYED ENOUGH WE WAS WE HAVE SCORED A BIT MORE GOALS. NASRI IS MORE VERITILE CAN HAS GOOD DRIMPLING ABILITY CAN PASS THE BALL AND CAN SCORE GOALS. NO ONE QUESTIONING HLEB ABILITY AND ITS VERY GOOD TO WATCH BUT HE NOT GOT THE ABILITY TO PLAY DIRECT. FAB PLAYES IN THE SAME POSITION HE DOES BUT HE SCORES , HELPS OUT INDEFENCE AND AND HE IS AN EXCELANT PASSER QUITE HE DOES TWICE NO THREE AS MUSH AS HLEB DOES. HLEB IS LUXURY PLAYER WE CAN LIVE WITHOUT HOWEVER IF EVON AT FABS YOUNG AGE 20 IF HE LEFT IT WOULD PUT BACK ALOUNG WAY

9. AndyGooner - 24 May, 2008

Alexander who? spilled milk no sense moaning over it.

10. Vindicator - 24 May, 2008

Sorry little Mozart and Jamesl. Hleb replaced Ljunbgerg, and wasn’t half of that player.

Not as good as Pires either.

We need a Ronaldo, not a Hleb.

Flamini was no Vieira either.

Good riddance to both - a good opportunity to find some world class players now.

Oh, and to the author, it’s “whoop dee doo” not “whoop ti doo”

11. mutdkilla - 24 May, 2008

little mozart 5,me too.i’m wondering how stupid some guys can be,we all agree that he’s got a phobia of shootin but that doesnt mean he was shit.

12. Gunner #1 - 24 May, 2008

Hleb’s a great player and sadly he’s gonna be leaving, but not for footballing reasons I am sure. The best place for him to be would be at the emirates, our style of play compliments his. Okay he didnt score much but assists count just as much as goals scored. But fuck it, if he wants to go, let him, as much as I’d love him to turn around and say to his agent “Fuck off mate, I’m happy here.” i cant be arsed to wait if he stays or goes. Arsenal Football Club is bigger than any player, we’re not a one man fucking band, we’ve proved that this season. Mark my words, life after Hleb will be great, no wrong words. Life after Hleb will be full of success.

13. glen - 24 May, 2008

Dont think anyone’s saying Hleb is a crap player. Gawd I effin hate in when people try and act all superior like that as if they’re in the effin know.

Hleb is a gifted technical player, but a fucking frustrating one!

Even when he played in his preferred position behind the striker, the twat still didnt score!

I hope that we become a bit more direct in his absence.

14. herdee string - 24 May, 2008

Hleb sucks cock.

He’s crap. Fucking shit. I can shoot better. He’s got no end product, his bullshit pfaffing on the ball lost us the game against PSV and all of you dickheads who suggest he was top quality are out of your fucking minds.

There was only one Dennis Bergkamp. There only ever will be one Dennis Bergkamp.

Pleb is a very very poor man’s attempt at Dennis…

15. Ramgun - 24 May, 2008

Hleb kept himself safe over the last three months of the season. He decided he wanted out when Eduardo was crippled. When Hleb had the chance to beat Liverpool in the league at our place in the 95th minute he was more concerned with making sure that nobody was coming at him and the chance was gone. We need goals from the flanks and Hleb would never have got them. It is a chance for us to improve.

16. BW - 24 May, 2008

Sir, I knew Robert Pires

…..and you are no Robert Pires

17. California Steve - 24 May, 2008

Just chipping in with more of the same. Hleb’s a terrific player when allowed the freedom of playing centrally. He played well behind the main striker and for Belarus, he’s fantastic — as you’d guess — in the role Cesc plays for us.

As for the wing, I thought he just slowed up the game got trapped on the ball far too often. Being a dribbling magician ain’t much use in the centre circle.

Face it, Alex was never going to get an extended run as a “shadow striker,” becuase we have attackers who need to be on the pitch — not to mention that he can’t or won’t shoot.

I wish he wanted to stay around as a versatile, talented footballer.

But instead, he and the sleazy agent went the back-alley route, kissing Inter over ice cream the night before our CL game in Milan.

Trust me: Alex was GONE that night. Wenger says all the nice things because he doesn’t want to devalue his players, but he was fuming at Hleb and once he was certain the guy’s loyalties were bouncing all over Europe…

Arsene was sorting through his options months ago.

Despite what he says in public, Arsene knew for quite some time that both Flamini and Hleb were leaving — just as he knew he was going to flog Thierry to Barcalona and make it look like the captain’s decision.

Grimandi’s probably been buying ice cream for Nasri for a year!

Hey, that’s the world. The difference is that Wenger maintains some class about his tap-ups. (And I’m an Arsenal supporter!)

Given FAIR health and a centre back to can deal with balls in the air, we’ve got every shot to win the title.

Flamini and Hleb were role players. When you lose ‘em, you go get BETTER role players.

Cheers!

P.S. — Anyone fancy Per Mertesacker?

18. Sigi - 24 May, 2008

I really liked Hleb I don’t do it anymore…It seems that he and Flamini have chosen darkness over light, they will have to realise that it was a massive mistake.

19. TIM GAY BOY - 24 May, 2008

I LIKE SHORTS SHORTS!!

20. andrew - 24 May, 2008

Yes, he is leaving for money. His agent realized that if he’d stayed at Arsenal he would be approaching his 30’s…and we all know Wenger’s contract policy with players approaching 30 - rolling 1 year contract. So looked at he what he’s won at Arsenal, years left on contract, final chance to plays for another big team, and yes, a chance of getting a new contract(more money) somewhere else.

Helb will be missed cos in all reality Aresnal don’t have many creative players . Now we only have Cesc! But we definitely won’t be missing his (lack of) goals. And to be quite honest, he tended to slow the game down in the final third.

So my feelings are mixed. Lets see how the squad looks when the EPL starts before we start to moan/celebrate.

21. stevus - 24 May, 2008

Hleb is officially the biggest under-achiever (performance to medals ratio eg. 100+:0) since Tony Woodcock 22 years ago. At least the latter didn’t have a pathological fear of penalty boxes. Goodbye and good riddance to Hleb. He did improve drastically at the start of 07-08 but after October became the old show-pony of the previous two seasons. He’ll be great in our Over 35 masters’ 5-a-side team though (no shooting inside the ‘D’ - he’ll be in his juices there). Good website The Cannon- keep up the good work.

22. gaya - 24 May, 2008

Has anyone thought of the fact that Hleb is 27 yrs of age and has 2 yrs left on his contract and know how Arsenal operate he can only get a 1 yr extention which will take him to 30 yrs then its the 1 yr rolling contract. Do we really think that players are daft and are all about playing football or rather making the most of the playing years at the top level.
I strongly do not blame any player who chooses to leave based on how much he earns in Arsenal and what he can get elsewhere. the football world has changed since Ambromovich came along and we all know it. players earn maga money and why should has be deprived of that in the name of being loyal to playing pretty football.
If we were at least winnig medals at the end of the season that might have been a different issue but we are not.
So let us fans open are eyes and see it as it is and not what is said by the club.
If we are a big club then why are we having this issues. If we are a big club why cant we keep are players happy, why cant we provide them with security when the get to that magic number 30.
We moved to a big stadium to compete with other big clubs in terms of buying players and wages, when is that going to happen?

23. Danish Gooner - 24 May, 2008

You can have as much dribbling skills as you like if there is no end product you are not a proper footballer you are part of the Harlem Globetrotters. He never ever scored at stuttgart but everyone recognised he had amazing dribbling skill but that is not enough. His goal tally at Arsenal as our main attacking midfielder is piss poor.Wenger believed he could turn him in to a goalscoring midfielder but it never transpired he will always be a good provider but that is not what Arsenal need at the moment we need an attacking midfielder with balls and scoring ability.

24. ANDY - 24 May, 2008

Well good riddance to FLEB thats what i think of him, he cant score for toffee and is not wanted or needed by Arsene
We will be a bigger and better team without the like of Fleb and Flamini££££ ………GET LOST YOU LOSERS

25. Danish Gooner - 24 May, 2008

Gaya, you raise a very good point.Money is basically what drives the majority of people in their working life.I seriously think Wenger is deluded when he thinks he has got a divine right to keep players just because we play beautiful football. As if playing beautiful is enough for the players it certainly isnt……..money talks !!!!!!!

26. stevus - 24 May, 2008

On a different note, haven’t Chelski once again shown their class tonight by jettisoning Avram Grant in such hideously ruthless fashion. It’s as if to say they have a divine right to win EVERY trophy and score EVERY penalty kick. What an absurd bunch of cretins that board is - I hope that some of their fans can see how distasteful it all is. In a strange way it makes me proud of the way AFC backs Wenger no matter what. In fact, Man Ure have always backed Fergie even when the going has been rough (usually due to us). Chelski deserve everything that’s coming their way in the next decade - the fall will be so dramatic as to make the decline of Leeds look like a Mr Man book. I no longer give a toss who they buy at inflated prices!

27. Danish Gooner - 24 May, 2008

Chelsea is a plastic club with no more then a fanbase of 40.000.

28. rat gunner - 24 May, 2008

on arsenallegend.blogspot.com they had a survey and over 100 people voted and chose hleb as having the trickeiet feet in the world
hoever he scores nothing

29. RG - 24 May, 2008

Watching Hleb drop a shoulder & glide past players with such grace made me think I was watching Johan Cryuff - then he’d hit the final 3rd & I realised I was only watching Alexander Hleb. Got to be one of the most infuriating players I’ve ever seen wear the shirt because he has so much talent & yet so little end product.
Glad to see him go especially if we get the kind of money that’s being talked about.
Think he’s got the wrong replacement though. Ribery was the one for me - ideal for the demands of the Premiership. Hopefully Wenger proves me wrong with Nasri- he usually does!

30. Ryan - 24 May, 2008

Well Ronaldo’s goals would be nice, but I’d appreciate a player who scored half as many but could play well against decent teams.

31. Julian Fairbanks - 24 May, 2008

Nice one, man. Irish Gooner here — you’ve said it all about that scumbag Hleb — don’t forget that douch Flamini’s signing on fee to AC — He never left for mony, yeah right! Good luck playoing footie in the UEFA cup — ha ha, Mathew

32. tom - 24 May, 2008

hleb’s obviously a talented player, but there’s 2 reasons why i’m not too sad to see him go. 1. he doesn’t have much of an attacking instinct. before, if, say pires won the ball on the edge of the other team’s area, we’d play 3 or 4 quick passes and score. pires-vieira-bergkamp-henry-goal. when hleb wins the ball he stands there and waits for the other team to get ready, then passes it sideways. 2. he plays great when we’re winning, but when things aren’t going so well he goes awol. if we sell him and get someone a bit more incisive we’ll be a better team next season.

33. benji-mon - 24 May, 2008

just because hleb and flamini have the personality and integrity of a complete cunt doesnt make them shit players. hleb pulled all the strings for us and was our link between midefield and attack, his creativity will be hard to replace, he might not of scored many or have many official assists but he had a part to play in most of our goals, the guy is a magician and im worried to see him go. and flamini complemented fabregas perfectly,a good water carrier is hard to find

34. GoonerTim - 24 May, 2008

To 14. herdee string….

Nail on the head brother, couldn’t agree more. Your post was like a breath of fresh air. Y’know if fresh air was Truth. I never liked Hleb, never bought the crap about him being the creative midfielder that unlocked defense’s and set others up. Bullshit I say. He was a bunch of flash with no substance, let alone end product. Besides which, after seeing his little slap in the face move I’m almost as embarrassed of him as Eboue. Hleb sucks cock, for certainly.

35. Jonny Arsene - 24 May, 2008

great news…no loss to the best club in the UK….Pleb is a non-shooting waste of space. Good riddance, Nasri is a better prospect. Go suck your ice cream and stop hindering our team !!!! Eboue next ! (please) - Hes a waste of space as well, but at least he wants to play for the Arsenal.
Hleb I never rated you - whe you should have shot you passed the ball - thats just not good enough for our team

36. Thompson Richard - 24 May, 2008

Hleb and Flamini have shown they are not winners. In the books of Arsenal it would be said we once had players who stayed for three seasons (2006-200 8) but couldn’t win us a thing. They moved on as soon as they had the opportunity. Yes both players were good, but were not winners. Just watch Arsenal next season. I’m certain with a few replacement, the players would get us a trophy.

37. LEON - 25 May, 2008

there is no dought that wenger new hleb was leaving sometime he had chose he could have made hleb stay and see out his contract in reserves or he sell him and get 10-15 million i think its better let him go.

i keep on hearing that hleb is crap i think thats there hart s rulling over head there little dought that he is an extremly gifted player with very dripling skills, but thats not enough raw talent is not enough you mus t have end product he has none. when things where going well for use he was playing well, but once edwardo got indured we needed him to at least have a few assists and a few goals, he nowere to be seen.

he luxury player we can do without him

38. raj - 25 May, 2008

SHIT!!! Hleb, u better leave ARSENAL or FANZ will KILL u! We will bring in NASRI. He is better than u….

39. UPYOURARSEnal - 25 May, 2008

Raj shut it you slag

40. The Saint - 25 May, 2008

Arsene Feeder Club extraordinaire! We’re so good, don’t even bother to compensate us properly for all the great training and development that we do for you; we just love seeing the joy on your faces when you win all the trophies our fans are craving for. Just try to remember to give us some credit when you are winning trophies with our graduates. After all, just because we are too cheap to win trophies doesn’t mean you should. We simply can’t let just the West Ham and Ajax Academies have all the fun!

Wenger had better start doing better research on the very, very few buys that we actually get around to as signing sissies like Hleb and Reyes who moan and groan about everything and “terrible, terrible” London life etc. You think winter in London’s bad? Try Chicago or Toronto you wusses!

41. gunning for glory - 25 May, 2008

Common give the player his respect he s a good player.. Just like you or any1 else in the world tomorrow if you work your heart out for any company and you get better offers else where you will leave.. I would like hleb to stay and believe its not just for money but common be realistic the world is like that.

Be practical

Gunners all the way :)

42. King Kolo - 25 May, 2008

Good point ‘The Saint’ - Wenger hardly ever buys but I dont sense many of the team are lifers like Rooney, Scholes, Carrick, Vidic etc… its not just because we are not winning trophies at the moment its because there is no inevitablity about us doing well. Vela might be a star but will the Mexican playing in Spain stick it out in rainy, grey London?? Or Nasri etc… the only players we can rely on sticking around are Clichy, Toure and maybe Van Persie and Sagna. I dont think we’ll win anything next year though we may be closer and then we will be in crisis!

43. Mark - 25 May, 2008

Lose many more decent players and with luck you’ll be 4th next season or better still 5th lol!

Never mind, you’ll still have your amazing captain!!

44. j - 25 May, 2008

King Kolo, You so negative!!!1 I hate negative people.I promise you we are VERY good team,we had bad luck last season with injuries to eduardo, van and rosicky…….these are top players. We lost them at a very crucial part of the season when we needed them……..And i belive the injury to eduardo sychologically affected the other players. You all remember after the bermingham game we lost momentum……

However,i belive helb is leaving for money,he is 27yrs and he knows in two years time he will be going to a 1yr contract………So he wants to utilise the remaining part of his career effectively….with a better pay.

With his departure arsenal is going to be a better team, he dribbling skills have no end result.

45. Just Stick It In ! - 25 May, 2008

gaya_ good try…
