The Calm Before The Storm (?) 26 May, 2008

After a busy week of transfer rumours, it’s a fairly quiet bank holiday weekend of news. However it’s all meant to be happening soon. We’re now in the third week of his 2-3 week deadline for a signing and Le Boss has confirmed on French television that the Nasri signing should be happening soon. Also, Hleb looks like he’s on the verge of leaving too so maybe that’ll get sorted out this week too. Here’s what Wenger said about Nasri:
It is likely to happen. And if it does happen, it will be before the start of the European Championship.”
I don’t think the French transfer window actually opens until today anyway so hopefully something gets sorted in the next few days.
In my last post, I talked about Hleb leaving, in which I had a quote from his agent saying that a deal in being sorted out at the moment and “Talks are under way, and I don’t have the right to make them public. I think that the issue of his new club will be clarified in the next few days.”
So we’ve got that to look forward too in the next week too. Coincidently, looking at my diary I have a very busy week next week so hopefully I’ve got the time for all this news!
So what actually going on at the moment then? Not alot. The football season is coming to a close with all the play-offs at Wembley. Hull are coming up, which will make a nice away trip next season…and I was delighted to see Leeds remain in League 1 after, losing to Doncaster yesterday. Suck it up.
Theo Walcott’s been talking to the papers, but it’s been about playing for England rather than Arsenal. He’s in the Squad for England’s friendly against USA on Wednesday night but he’s still not given up on helping the U21’s:
It’s just good to play really. Maybe the experience we get with the seniors will help with the Under 21s, because there’s quite a few of us from the Under 21s in the seniors. Also, it gives us the opportunity to try to win the tournament as well, if there are senior squad players still young enough to play for the Under 21s who Stuart Pearce can call upon. We’ve still got to qualify but it’d be good to get the experience of winning a tournament under our belts.
It’d be a dream come true, to play for England at Wembley this week. I know I probably won’t start but hopefully I will do well. If I work hard and play well for Arsenal, then hopefully I’ll get my chance and why not?
Walcott’s England future is quite an exciting one and if he continues to improve at Arsenal then I’m sure it wont be long before he’s a regular at national level. I know that Capello’s a fan of the lad and for some years England have had trouble finding a decent strike partnership; maybe Walcott is the answer.
That’s your lot for this bank holiday Monday. Enjoy the rain.

the word likely is manufactured
‘Ça a des chances de se faire’ means ‘there is a chance of it happening’
likely changes the meaning entirely
Keep on clicking and keep these crappy sites like Tribalfootball in business
The bbc reported that the signing is ‘likely’ to take place in its gossip column. Whoever this guy is we have to expect a lot, the french have always been good to us!
Helb will be missed, he was in my fantasy team most of the year (when he was fit) but as a player he frustrated me sometime with he lack of shooting. He has a wikid little shot on him but lets not forget Rosiky is the better man and we still have him (no really he is still there somewhere). He got more assists and more goals. Nasri the new viera?
BBC did use the TF1 interview as it’s source but an already filtered version.
However I am 75% sure it will happen.
Nasri can play centrally as a playmaker so Fabregas could get a crucial breather.
Mystery is the question of def mid and central defence. What of Touré. Song has been touted by Wenger as central defender and Senderos is staying.
You know, I’ve got a great admiration for bloggers who can blog in the face of such little news-worthy information. There is fuck all to write about. Seriously. Nasri’s GOING to sign in a few days? Hleb’s GOING to leave in a few days? C’mon, it’s hard going when we’re speculating about what we’re going to blog about in a few days time.
and it’s funny how many people seem to moan about it!
I think it is perfectly acceptable to discuss speculation surround players. There arn’t any games on and it’s all we have to talk about and look forward to for a few months.
@Chef keep it up, i and i’m sure many others always read your posts and see them as a way of keeping in touch with what other fans think EVEN if it is just speculation gathered from other sites..
Personally i think its fun to speculate about possible signings. Whats also fun is laughing at all the bitching and crying some fans do about how we havent signed this player or that player (like 99% of those players linked are even a possibility) and unless we sign 9 new players we will never compete again.
Arsene Wenger said as much on French TV a few days ago.
“It is likely to be. If it happens, it will be before the start of the Euro” he said.
This comes after, as first reported on this site, the player’s agent tried to stall the negotiations by announcing that other teams were interested in signing Nasri.
Nasri’s agent, Jean-Pierre Bernès, is even today trying to put the spanner in the works by saying : “nothing has yet been done”
However Marseille’s President, Papa Diouf, confirmed that although there were some conditions to be met the deal will go through in a few days.
“The departure of Samir is not yet settled” he said.
“It still has to meet certain conditions relating to the recent renewal of the contract (the mode of payment to Marseille).
This would, however be in a matter of days …”
Apparently Nasri’s club are asking for an improved offer aside the £11m (four-year deal) that Arsenal have put on the table.
This is likely to include additional payments in the future if Arsenal win domestic and European titles and is similar to the deal struck when Reyes was brought to the club form Sevilla.
9! DeiseGooner you are an idiot. We need a Cb and two wingers. Simple.
Read my comment again sous chef and see if you can grasp what i was saying. It was a comment about bitchy fans who want/expect/ feel it necessary for us to sign every player linked to us, making wholesale changes etc. Not what i feel we need.
You great big Tit
