Transfer latest: Ade, Hleb, Arshavin & Gareth Barry 12 July, 2008Posted by lasagnechef in Arsenal News.
It seems the ball is very slowly getting ready to roll in the transfer market. We’re still stuck at stalemate but it does seem that it’s all about to kick-off.
The transfer that could start making things happen is Alex Hleb’s he is apparently very close to a move to Barcelona now and could be unveiled early next week. So if that does happen, then it draws the following conclusions:
1. Arshavin will not be going to Barca
2. Barcelona are unlikely to be able to afford Adebayor
3. Surely, Barca are going to have to sell (Eto’o/Ronaldinho) before they can buy again
4. Milan are the only team in the running for Adebayor
So once Hleb’s gone, we really only need one more transfer to happen before everyone inevitably falls into place.
However, AC Milan are now saying the Adebayor deal is off for the moment until they sort out the futures of their current players. So if that’s the case, Adebayor is staying at Arsenal for the time being, unless a new bidder comes in.
Also, Andrei Arshavin has now dramatically changed his tone. Remember how he was desperate to play for Barcelona and it was the club of his dreams blah blah blah. We’ll now this is the latest from his agent:
“Andrei is desperate to join Arsenal. His style of play would suit them perfectly.”
Oh really now? What I really think is that everyone has backed away from him and now they’re desperate to try and find a top European club for him. Barca are getting Hleb so they don’t need him, Chelsea don’t need him, Milan don’t want him, United haven’t shown any interest, Madrid are too busy with Ronaldo so now they’re flirting with us.
I just don’t think it’ll happen; He’s 27, Zenit St Petersburg want £24m for him and we’ve just bought Nasri. Those three reasons are why I think Wenger wouldn’t go near him. The only thing I can think of is if we seriously consider that Tomas Rosicky’s career is over. Then we might be interested.
There’s a fresh link to talk about today. The Telegraph say we’ve enquired about Gareth Barry. He still hasn’t moved to Liverpool, which is just unbelievable. Aston Villa just need to let go and realise that Barry wants to move on, they can’t just force him to stay by rejecting bids. He’s very publicly said he wants a move so they shouldn’t really have a choice. I’m sure Wenger doesn’t really want Adebayor to go but he knows that he has to sell him; Martin O’Neill needs to act this way in regards with Gareth Barry.
Anyway, the deal to Liverpool hasn’t been done so we’ve poked our heads in to see what’s going on. Apparently we might offer a player in return as part of the deal, possibly Justin Hoyte. Barry would be a great addition after Flamini’s departure, but whether we can afford him is a different matter. Might just be a silly rumour but if this one takes off it could be interesting.
Nasri talks about why he chose Arsenal and says that Patrick Vieira and Thierry Henry both recommended he came to us.
And finally, some of the televised fixtures have been announced and we will now be officially the first game of the season. Our opener against West Brom is now a 12:45pm kick off which will be the first of the 2008/09 Premier League season. I can’t wait.
Wow, a busy Saturday today. Hopefully we get some transfer action next week. Thanks for reading.
