Monday News: The players are back to training 21 July, 2008

Good Monday to you. There’s not a lot going on today as the squad have been travelling to Austria. However, today’s the day that some of our internationals were due back, including Emmanuel Adebayor.

Apparently he was in training today, as expected. Wenger said at the weekend that he expects Adebayor to stay. The manager wants him to stay, but after what a fool he’s made of himself this summer no one really knows what to expect. As I’ve said before, if Ade is going to stay at Arsenal this season then I want some sort of formal apology to the fans and the club.

He’s going to get a horrible reception next season if he stays without saying anything. There were songs sung about ‘Greedybayor’ on Saturday at Underhill and I expect them to continue in protest.

I’m not sure if the whole squad is back in training, but I know most of them are. You could excuse Cesc Fabregas for another week seeing as Spain reached the final of Euro 2008, but then again he didn’t play every single minute of their games so you never know. There’s no information or pictures up on Arsenal.com anyway.

After the Barnet game Arsene spoke to the press and said he was looking to bring in at least one more player. He said it would be a maximum of two but he hopes to get one in. He (obviously) didn’t name any names but I think it could be midfielder he’s after. We know that he’s enquired about Gareth Barry and Xavi Alonso; if he was to get one of them then I think it’d really boost the team. We’re not used to big name signings, especially Premiership ones. If a deal can be done in either case, I’d be really happy but we’ll have to wait and see.

Back in May, Arsene hinted we might be buying a defender but there hasn’t been much news on that this summer. If it does happen it won’t come at a great surprise but we haven’t been linked with anyone yet.

As usual, when asked about signings Arsene reminded us that we have players coming through the youth system and players coming back from injury. He reminded us that we have van Persie and Rosicky coming back but if either one of those can pull together a string of games without injury then I’ll be very pleasantly surprised.

Wenger also said he expects more from Walcott this season. He’s backing him to carry on improving and cement a place in the first team. Theo has just taken on the no.14 shirt and a lot of expectation will come with a move like that. Of course realistically I know that nothing is going to change because the number on his back is different but if he’s asked for that number he must be up for fighting for a first team spot.

Sagna’s also been talking. He missed the end of last season through injury but he hopes to be on top of his game come mid-August. His dismisses that he might suffer from ’second season syndrome’ and is hoping to win some silverware.

That’s it for today then. We play Szombathelyi Haladás from Hungary tomorrow evening, not sure what sort of a team we can expect to put out for that one but hopefully there’ll be some news about it tomorrow. Thanks for reading.

Any of these friendlies on TV this year?

2. Toby - 21 July, 2008

The one, “certain”, signing may be the portuguese guy from Bremen I’m afraid, whats’s his name “Bischoff” or something similar?
I haven’t heard much about that possible signing lately, have you?

3. ey - 21 July, 2008

on ATVO for sure, maybe on Setanta

4. josh - 21 July, 2008

yea, that bischoff thing should be confirmed soon. the games are one arsenal tv, (online and on setanta), whereas the emirates cup and amsterdam tourney are on sky as far i know.

5. Burt - 21 July, 2008

Bischoff is a guy from Bremen’s reserves, and Boss talked about one player with experience.

6. Internet Gooner - 21 July, 2008

Burt, German reserve teams do play in the league, so it would be like loaning him out to a Championship side. But I would expect Wenger to sign someone with a bit more experience.

7. Burt - 21 July, 2008

I don’t think Bishoff is a player with experience in Wenger’s opinion. He could be this second signing, but for sure he is not a guy which Wenger has in thoughts talking about experience.

8. Toby - 21 July, 2008

Wenger hasn’t promised to sign anyone with experience, has he?

9. Burt - 21 July, 2008

“We can get in one player with experience yes,” said the manager at the weekend. “It will be two maximum but one certainly.

10. Toby - 21 July, 2008

You’re right, Burt. I found that statement.
Let’s hope that “experienced” means at “Premier League level” or “Chanpions League level”!
Anyway, I trust Arsene!

Loads of the friendlies are live on Arsenal TV on Virgin, channel 542 methinks. The Barnet game was on last weekendand there’s usually nothing on a weekend.

I still think we’re light a goalie, a centre back and atleast 1 midfielder. Here’s to another trophyless season this year.

12. Burt - 21 July, 2008

In my opinion we need even 2 midfielders - DM and one creative, because Rosicky is always sideline.

13. King Richard - 21 July, 2008

Adebayor Formal Apology!!! For what you plum? Stop reading and writing shit!

14. hasan khan - 21 July, 2008

yeah wenger go get barry who whould u guys whant more barry or xabi i would like baryy more lol

15. honduran arsenal fan - 21 July, 2008

i would like xabi alonso instead of barry but i think it would be better if arsenal get tosten frings or hitzlsperger or sweinsteiger (he can play as a defensive miedfielder also and would be great when the team is attacking)…so, if you notice those 3 players where germans..i think arsenal needs a german player because of the way they are…they are great workers on the pitch, they have a great physical condition, they never give up, and the most important thing is that the germans always appear when no one expects it as shown in the euro and worldcup…i mean, they have a great spirit and they never give up, just like a gunner should be…so i think that a german would be a great addition for the club…

16. loop - 21 July, 2008

Schewinsteiger as DM wtf? Hitlzsperger were shite in Premier League…

17. robert - 21 July, 2008

Where in midfield does Amaury Bischoff play???? DM, OM of winger????

18. honduran arsenal fan - 21 July, 2008

actually yes, sweinsteiger has played as DM…yeah, after i wrote about hitzlsperger i questioned myself but maybe he would be different in arsenal…but i think frings would be the best of those 3…and why not buy both sweinsteiger and frings..wait, its true, arsenal doesnt want to spoil the kids growth and i think we dont have the money…so only frings would be fine

19. Burt - 22 July, 2008

I don’t think it’s about money. From selling Diarra and Muamba (from B’gham to Bolton) we got around 5 mln. Barca payed 12 mln for Hleb, so it’s this amount of money that we pushed on Ramsey and Nasri. We have also our own resources (Edelman talked in february about “huge” resources), so in my opinion Wenger will get everyone player(s) he wants. It’s only a question who is it.

20. MAX UNDERWOOD - 22 July, 2008

ADEBAYOORRR ADEBAYOOOOORRR,
HIS DAD WASHES ELEPHANTS,
HIS MUM IS A WHOOREEEE

21. wenger - 22 July, 2008

fuck u max thats the last thing i xpect frm an arsenal fan! ade is the best premiership striker en surely he deserves respect putting n mind he has bn improvin every new season which am sure he will do again this season if u wont sing songs like that to him.he was trying to tell us that we should be fair 2 him and atleast add him a few pound on his rather slim pay slip which he deserves 30 goals is not a joke even rooney didnt have half of that.

22. keh - 22 July, 2008

Let him Go….GREEDYBAYOR GO………. we have walcott..

23. brendon - 22 July, 2008

I thought wenger and the board have agreed to increase his wages to around 70k/60k, which is already adding ‘a few pound to his rather slim pay slip’. but, nope, togo twat wants wages comparable or similar to the great TH14 or he’ll go to play for the bigger clubs of the world then holding arsenal to ransom! And he has had ONE, just one good season mind you. And no.21, wenger, he’s not the best premiership striker, sorry, had to get that off my chest.

24. TH 14 the greatest - 22 July, 2008

Ade doesnt want 120k a week anymore the kind hearted striker has dropped his demand to 100k a week. Why doesnt Wenger just tell the greedy sod to F**k off

25. Wenger Dont Know - 22 July, 2008

Wenger expects more from Theo does he.Well Arsene if would help if you bl;oody well played him instead of the useless Eboue. You are killing Theo”s confidence when every time he plays well you drop him for the next game

26. Just a momo - 23 July, 2008

Wouldn’t you love it if we signed Anderson from Manure, would really make my day. He’s absolutely perfect for us, strong as a rhino, tackles, passes, runs a bit like a girl, shoots, but he did put Fab in his pocket and made Adebayor look very clumsy at the Emirates. He’s also best mates with Denilson (they used to play in the Brazil U17 CM together) and is currently (wrongly) behind hargreaves and carrick in their pecking order….

Go on Arsene, get the stocky Brazilian. Either him, or Arteta from Everton - who I think is more ‘us’ than Alonso - more mobile and determined - I think he’s genuine class. we could also pick up Momo Sissoko from Juve - he’s not playing, but looked great before they signed that tiny genius Argy in the middle of the park.
