Deadline Day – Let the madness begin 1 September, 2008

It’s deadline day and you know what that means – Sky Sports News has a crazy party. It’s the one day that we’re all sat at the computer with the TV on in the background frantically refreshing various websites. Of course, there will be one or two out there just to have a bit of fun with: “BREAKING NEWS OMG KAKA’ AT ARSENAL TRAINING GROUND LOL!!1″ I was thinking of doing something later but people would think I just wanted hits and being a NewsNow whore blah blah blah…
In recent years this day has been a busy one, last year we bought Lassana Diarra off Chelsea with about half an hour to go. The year before we completed the complicated swap for Gallas and Cole whilst also sorting out a move for a Brazilian youngster by the name of Denilson.
I’m expecting another cheeky last minute deal from Wenger. I don’t think it’ll be anyone special, but I think he’ll just get someone in to bulk up the squad, no one really high profile because I’m sure the manager knows we’re lacking in number. I wouldn’t actually be surprised if he brought in two players tonight. Gunnerblog has compiled a list of his transfer candidates, some interesting options in there.
He talks about the possibility of Alonso still making the move to London. Initially he was expected to leave once Gareth Barry’s signing was completed but that never happened. However Alonso isn’t particularly happy at Liverpool and despite playing every game this season Benitez might be tempted if we came in with a late offer.
What I said last Monday still stands, I’m not happy with Wenger’s lack of signings and we are STILL desperate for players. Ok, with a fully fit squad we’re probably alright but you can’t take that risk! We have an awful injury record here and it’s just not going to happen. Say Fabregas gets injured, who’s his replacement? Ramsey? We still need someone.
I saw this coming, Wenger leaving it ’til the last day and leaving us still in the blank. I still think we’ll sign someone though, Arsene likes last minute cheap deals and I’ll be surprised not to see at least one player announced as signed in the morning. I say I’ll be ‘surprised’, I mean ‘furious’. I don’t even want to start talking about ‘if we don’t sign anyone…’ yet.
Yes, we have been playing well recently. That’s not an excuse not to sign someone though. Wenger said last week that we don’t need to sign just because we lost a game, that’s not what we were saying but that’s what he said. Well now I’m saying that just because we won it doesn’t mean we don’t need to sign anyone. Look at all the other teams, they’re doing well but they’re still keen to add to the squad, make it better. That’s what we should be like.
I do hope Wenger’s busy at work and he can prove me and lots of other Gooners wrong by signing someone. If he does, he’ll still get criticized as to why he’s done it so late and risk points in our first few games, but at that point I’d just be glad to have one extra player to add to our thin squad!
So now we play the waiting game. Not much more we can do. I will speak to you tomorrow, hopefully to announce a new signing or two. Thanks for reading.
i feel we are forturnate position we only need to midfielder cover incase insuries,we have kept are key players,we still risicky,diaby ,delilson,fab,song, and i with the likes of ramsy,wiltshirerandal,marida ,armury and players like that can be used in carling cup and fa cup matches we will be bale rest fab and other senior midfielders, i hope he does buy a player just as cover but its time for likes delison ,diaby ramsy to step up show what they have show they have quality i ythink they do.
i think we have some very good impact players in carlos vela and bretna and ade and rvp are very good and hopefully edwardo will back in full flow by january. i dont think it be desaster if wenger buy some one ,i keep on hearing wenger needs to buy a big name but a disagree, i would rather have very talneted playerthat has played for smaller team that intergtrate into team well rather have huge,with an infacted ego wants 150 thousand a week, players ade,edwardo,sanga,fab all these are hugely talented and thats all that matters the rest is just hipe, if he find player with of same quality of players that we currenlty have then he should get one or two but if cant just waite until junuary
would love to see arsene sign alonso and bring paddy v back in on loan too for a season, he wont play too many games but just to have him back would be great

I dont see the point of bringing PV4 back, If Wenger thought that would be the only solution he would have hung on to Bert.
I suspect it will be another youngster maybe in the 20-24 bracket that can challenge for a starting spot but not guaranteed starter.
While Alonso would be a good signing, I really just dont feel he is what we need. Think how our game will suffer with him sitting in front of the back 4 and then him trying to catch the keeper off his line every chance he gets. He is also not a tough tackler or a midfield marauder.
we can cope with an injury to our first choice player in every position accept central midfield. I mean accept Cesc Fabregas. we cant cover for him simple as that. RVP, Sagna, Denilson etc we can cover for in the event of injury but not Fab. Last season Flam could do both the attacking and defending role but this season no one can do that as well. No player can play every game. cesc will miss more games this season. its those games where you have to worry for us. we have a go at utd for being reliant on Ronaldo but we are equally as bad.

we all grow to love the job wenger has done for the club after all the successes, especially with a relatively lower budget compared with those free spending clubs. it is hard to really doubt or criticize his decision to do nothing before the deadline. but seeing moves elsewhere like berbatov, robinho, and even xisco, there isnt really any excitement here…
throughout the summer, all those rumors — arshavin, aqunlani, villa, alonso, martins — nothing happens.
no one here is expecting a big move, we just want one body to fill up an obvious hole — an experienced player in the DM role. Alonso, no; Inler, no; Barry, no; what about Vieria, no; HECK.. WHAT ABOUT FREAKING I-DONT-HAVE-A-CLUB APPIAH??? no…

My frustration levels have been growing all day…. This better not come back and bite us in the ass. If we have injury problems and have to put in second rate players into the team i’m going to be fucking angry especially because this could of been so easily avoided by just signing one (or two) players. In fact i will be pretty angry if we don’t challenge for the premier league title. That’s my rant out of the way. Please Arsene, prove everybody wrong.

I’m a big Wenger’s advocate but I’m a little bit frustrated that the likes of Veloso could be a great addition to the squad.
But as I said before, this team is great as it is without any MAJOR injuries which I hope we don’t have again this year.
You can say all you want about our thin squad but if Ronaldo or Gerrard was to get big injuries their teams will be doomed as same as ours losing Cesc. When Diaby is back then I think we’ll be alright.
And I happened to think that Wenger will TRY to sign in January. I don’t know, let’s see where our team goes!
PS: What the fuck happened with Robinho? Why would he wants to move to Man City? There’re too many money grabbing players these days and we are the most attractive club of those type of players in the last few years.

Give this team at least till Christmas. Even the invincibles squad were all not superstars at first, viera, henry, pires, lauren, freddie, etc. They were made into worldclass players by wenger, and the most expensive one was henry for 10 mil. I’m just an optormistic gunner who always support the manager and especially the players. I’m in a relationship with this club and I know it can’t do anything I want, but I also know it wants me to be happy and wants to be successful as much as me.
All the same dude. We’ll have to wait for decent Diaby as Fabregas’ partner.
We’ll still own the league. I don’t know but some part of me is glad that we didn’t sign anyone.
