A new day, a new Arshavin story 20 January, 2009

The story of our transfer window goes on and on but today it takes a new twist. Today, it’s looking less likely that he will sign and the deal is now being described at 50:50.

Gunnerblog has an exclusive from a Russian newspaper saying that we are refusing to fly out to Russia and negotiate:

“Zenit are prepared to meet Arsenal to discuss this. We are ready to reduce the fee and accept certain bonus clauses as part of the agreement. But so far Arsenal have refused to increase their offer for Andrei above £12m. If the Londoners come over to Russia to meet with us there is a very good chance they will get Arshavin. But so far that hasn’t happened as Arsenal say they see no point in having discussions in St. Petersburg.”

That’s quite remarkable if true. If we really want the player then of course we should go out there to finalize the deal. It sounds like we are so nearly there. Have we not learnt anything from the Alonso deal in the summer? Our reluctance to pay an extra million or two cost us dear and left us bare for the season.

Now January has rolled around we have a chance to add to the squad. Arshavin would be a great talent to have on board and we’re closing in on him. All it’s going to take is that little push more and he will be ours.

I’m just worried that this will fall through and we’ll end up with no one. Last week Wenger said he has his eye on other people but I’m not counting on that. We really need a big name and if there was anything going on then we probably heard by now. I think we’re being sneaky and we’re going to go in and raise Manchester City’s offer for ‘Kaka. It’s all part of the master plan.

This story is going to go on and on but at least in two weeks time we will know where we stand.

There’s really not a lot going on this early in the week. Wenger’s been talking about Aaron Ramsey saying he’s pleased with his progress and thinks he’s definitely one for the future.

Well I’m gonna leave it there for today, speak to you tomorrow – no doubt with more crap from Arshavin’s representatives.

See ya.

Brace yourself cos the next thing we will hear is that the club tried it’s best to get someone special into the squad but wasnt able too.
if Nasri is worth close to 12M i dont know what Arshavin is worth in Wenger’s eyes
what a pity.

i have a sneaking feeling that we wont sign arshavin. If it hasnt been done by friday, id say its a defintate no-go. If not him, im not sure who else has been linked and alonso clearly wont be sold now. Guess i will end up cursing our stubborness on keeping within a low budget instead of throwing caution to the wind.

4. Source.1 - 20 January, 2009

Ok so i posted last week claiming a £13.5 million deal was on the table for Zenit to accept or decline. Zenit have declined!!

However, news coming to me is that Usmanov is meeting Zenit this week (Im not sure of the day)not Arsenal to get this deal sorted, he knows Arsenal’s offer, he knows Zenit are being greedy and stubborn and a little word in thier ear may just let the reality sink into Zenit’s head that they mat lose any transfer fee in 10 months time.

Other clubs have contacted Zenit but are not prepared to move higher than Arsenal’s offer and are willing to wait come next January to have the player for free.

5. eddie - 20 January, 2009

That would be a minimum of 3 moves for Arshavin scuppered by Zenit over the price: Barca, Spurs and Arsenal. Surely they realise that by the summer he’ll be 28, still without experience of a top European League and having spent a year out of the limelight.

To be honest, I think Wenger is pulling away from this deal as he doesn’t see the long-term value for a bloke who’s 28 in May and will likely need a 6-month adaptation period. Zenit just want to recoup part of the 30m quid they spent on Danny (who?) from Dinamo Moscow – they obviously haven’t followed the news of this “recession” thing that’s going on.

6. Adebadhair - 20 January, 2009

I’ve an awful feeling if we don’t sign Arshavin for the sake of a couple of million. The clamour for Wenger to leave will be enormous and i for one will not be able to defend him anymore

7. Alex - 20 January, 2009

Yeah – lets forget the whole thing and buy a big thug for central defence and a ball winner for the midfield. We dont need any more “creative players” when we have Vela, Wilshere, Merida, Walcott and Rosicky waiting in the wings.

8. redbearer - 20 January, 2009

What the hell is going on? I really thought that Arsenal were better at negotiating deals… if these reports are accurate then the representatives of the club have turned their backs on any proposed transfer!
It’s beggars belief that we are stuffing this up in a similar fashion to what Spurs did back in the Summer.. I thought we were more professional that this but obviously we do not have the infrastructure in place to seal the deal!!

9. Jake Reily - 20 January, 2009

This transfer really is a joke. We seem to want to pay penuts and then price adeybayor at 30million when milan come calling. All this talk from wenger only bringing in a special player is so frustrating. A decent central defensive midfielder and powerful centre back is all we ask!!!!! I do miss David Dein. What ever you say, he could get the job done in these kind of negociations

10. ali - 20 January, 2009

for god sake ! aren’t we one of the richest club in the world ! we can’t afford 3 more millions ?!?!!!!! what the hell is going on ? we bought nasri 4 12 million ! up to 15 million ! i think the 6th top player in the world deserves much better !

out board prove it once that we are still a big club , we can’t afford 3 more millions ! this is a critical situation we need critical actions ! hell with the policy ! if we can’t get this one we wont be able to get any superstar ! what do u guys expect ! how the hell we can buy a superstar with an experience 4 less dan 15 million ! palacios ( 14 ) defoe ( 15 ) the serbian man u bought ( 14.5 ) million ! 4 god sake wenger

these board are letting us down , if any one would tell me do we have other options ? no ! cranjcar singed a new deal , artita staying , elia staying ! no one with that skills and talent and experience available ! hell with the policy get 3 more millions and get the guy !!

11. craszy_gunner - 20 January, 2009

Absolute Tosh if we don’t sign arshavin life will go on as normal not a single thing will happen signing him is not going to let us win the league anyway….and we can’t play him in the CL…

I say play hard ball and get him for 3m later this yr …he can buy out his contract then for as little as that…Why would anyone pay that kind of money for a 28yr old when you can get him on the cheap…

They will have to count their losses on Danny how silly …how the fuck did they even get 30m in the first place…

12. potter - 20 January, 2009

how the fuck did they even get 30m in the first place….

Russian gas that is keeping Eastern Europe warm. If this is Gazidis first solo action in negotiation then it seems we miss David Dein badly.

13. eddie - 20 January, 2009

they’ll end up selling him to newcastle or spurs for 8m in the summer, nobody else will want him. If he goes to Barca or Real, he’ll spend his career (or what’s left of it) on the bench.

14. Buxton Gooner - 20 January, 2009

I dont think we need Arshavin.. he is too similar to what we already have.. we can score goals.. we just cant stop them.. would rather see a decent centre half.. and a sturdy mid field player.. and while we’re at it Shay Given.. it all starts with the spine of the team.. when we won the title we had the spine.. seamen.. adams.. viera..henri.. we need that again.. not a small nippy front player we have enough of them.. and not enough steel..

15. Nut - 20 January, 2009

Agree ali, fuck the board, fuck wenger!!! Extra £3 million, if we dont sign him villa’s luck will last all season then we will lose out on up £40 million.(That makes sense!!!) No point keep talking bout cesc, theo and rosicky they are all out long term. Lies lies lies will be the normall bolloxs from peter hillwood and wenger on feb 4.

16. dj - 20 January, 2009

okay if Villa’s luck is going to last all season then what will Arshavin do about it. I was kind of dumb to say unless Arshavin has some kind of special power that stops luck. Anyway I want the player but if your going to pay like 16 to 18 million for him then we might as well do for a better player and younger player. One that’s in his early 20′s that will be here pass two or three years.

17. uk bubbler - 20 January, 2009

Here we go again isn’t this all becoming abit boring, Arsenal and there transfer policy. We havn’t won anything for a number of years, has it not dawned on them it might be correlated to not spending any money.

For people who think we don’t need him, I beg to differ, if he is the only person targeted then I say we need him. Surely must be better than eboue and the like.

18. Andy Arse Shaving - 20 January, 2009

If you look at the posts on here, people say the most stupid things. Nobody really knows what is going on in these negotiations, yet there is a whole web of conspiracy, incompetence etc. being weaved by the contributors on here. Somebody even said how much we miss Dein in these negotiations, the guy who made such a great job of holding on to Ashley Cole. What a joke!

19. dangerous - 20 January, 2009

Exclusive…….

Arsene Wenger has left the country for 2 days, not sure wheere he’s gone, but it is to tie up a deal.

20. marcus - 20 January, 2009

fuck off wenger

21. dangerous - 20 January, 2009

Marcus dont be a dick,Spud fan obviously…Cant wait to see utd stuff u in the final ha ha

22. potter - 21 January, 2009

Think about it maybe the people that got rid of Dein were the ones that apparently renaged on the offer given to Cole. Sometimes you have to look behind the wood to see the trees.

23. Powelly - 21 January, 2009

This club is a joke when it comes to transfers. Firstly we sell players so cheap when Barca and Real Madrid come knocking that it’s beyond a joke. Then we back down because clubs demand fair fees for their players….LIKE WE SHOULD DAMN WELL DO!!! SOmeone needs to seriously look at the transfer appraoch of Arsenal. Bring back Dein and quick, at least he got things done!!!!

24. DeiseGooner - 21 January, 2009
25. We dont fear your throw ins Stoke - 21 January, 2009

TWO CHOICES

1. DONT BUY ANYONE AND WE MISS OUT ON THE CL AND LOSING £40m

2.SPEND £10-20M AND QUALIFY FOR THE CL AND EARNING £40M

WE ALL KNOW WENGER AND OUR F**KING BOARD WILL CHOSE CHOICE 1.

26. ARSENE KNOWS - 21 January, 2009

Dont panic

Rosicknote will be like a new sigming when he comes back in 2012

27. don - 22 January, 2009

wenger is a stingy old barstard. how typical of our board to keep their fists tight at a time when we are so close to signing a guy who i think is absolutely brilliant and will give us the creativity missing with fabregas injured. i say ALL arsenal fans send a petition to tell the board to either cough up the extra few million or get out. (and take old wenger scrooge with them too)

28. don - 22 January, 2009

Hi. am back. what say arsenal fans go on fundraising trips and make up the extra £3 million LOL >_<
