And the summer begins… 29 May, 2009

Today the long summer ahead of us has finally sunk in for me. The sun has come out and I have been to the beach today with the weather set to be getting even better over the weekend. It might even hit 25℃ around here, which is nice. Friday is usually a busy day with Arsene’s press conference but for the first time there’s pretty much no news to report on – the first of many dead Fridays to come. I can tell this is going to be a long and boring summer.
There is only one football match left and it’s this weekend’s FA Cup Final between Everton and Chelsea. I guess I will be watching it as my last football fix of the summer, and obviously I’ll be going for Everton – Goes without saying really doesn’t it. My hate for Chelsea has intensified this year. Actually so has it for a lot of teams, it’s been a very hate-filled season it has for me. Hmm.
Anyways… well there is a bit of news I guess. Cesc Fabregas has been talking about his old club Barcelona:
“Which player would not like to play for a team like that at the moment? They are probably the best team that I have seen play in history and I have a lot friends there who are always telling me great things.
Of course, you feel envy in a healthy way because of the way they play football. Everyone’s dream would be to play in a team like this.”
I guess he hasn’t really said anything wrong there but this is always going to spark rumours. The Sun has translated it as “Cesc Fabregas: I’d love to play for Barcelona”; however the harsh truth is that he wouldn’t even get in their team. We laugh at Hleb for going there and getting no football but with Messi, Xavi, Iniesta and the likes, even Fabregas will find it hard getting games. It’s the harsh truth for Cesc. They may now be managed by his boyhood hero who has just won the Spanish Treble for the first time in history in his first year as manager, but I don’t think it’s time for Cesc to return to Catalonia.
He’s also been talking about Thierry Henry after his much talked about, long awaited Champions League win:
“I spoke to him yesterday and that was the only thing that he was missing. He was delighted. He had a difficult year adapting and this year he came into his own. Guardiola showed faith in him.
Now Henry has everything and I do not know if there are many players that can equal his honours list.”
Yep, he’s right. It’s something Cesc will be aiming at but I just hope he isn’t thinking of leaving us so soon! He can achieve a lot here if this team sticks together – the fans, players, staff and manager have to all be patient and it should be worth the wait.
Nicklas Bendtner has been talking about extending his contract but Robin van Persie says there are no developments with his. The Dutch striker admits that no progress has been made but, “Maybe I will soon have something new to report.” I hope so. He’s proven a lot this year, for example that he can sty fit for a whole season. With Adebayor likely to leave this summer we really need to get RVP signed up. Sort it out, Arsene!
That’s about all there is today, so I’m going to leave you to it. Enjoy the sun.

this is gonna be the last season that cesc is with the gunners. next year barca are going to need a replacement for xavi and unforntunatley cesc fits the bill. so gunners, enjoy what our captin offers to the team because soon will be without his creative influence
Great Post m8! What do you think of this Barry rumor? You think we might get him? At the right price of course. 6 to 8 million.?!? If we can get him, a great big CB and keep the rest of our squad (Including Ade) I really do think we would be a real force.
cesc is no.1— He won’t leave if we win things next season. Which we will. Imagine a midfield of Arshavin-Fabregas-Barry-Rosicky. With Ramsey, Walcott, Nasri, Wilshere, DIaby,Song, Denilson,Traore and Eboue all fighting fora place in there. Forwards– Ade, RVP ,Dudy, Vela, Bendtner and Simpson.
We can do much better than Barry for less money. And you know this, man.
Samir
Cesc will leave He wants to win the the top 2 trophies(CL and Prem) and we are a million miles from winning them
And where the fuck is the DM in your list of midfielders?Eboue,Diaby and Square ball Denilson can all fuck off. They are SHITE
Cesc didn’t say he wants to play for Barcelona he said who wouldn’t want to play for a team like that – by that he means a team that is united, plays for each other, plays great football and is successful… every player wants there team to be that team. Cesc wants Arsenal to be that team, to play like that and he has not given up hope on that.
Why when english is the first language of the person writing this blog and this is being translated from spanish… is it so hard for you to comprehend and write that… instead you go with what The Sun said and how many times have the Sun twisted a quote from Cesc? How many times has he been leaving 10? 12? more… and he’s still here isn’t he, well fancy that.
I mean really the problem isn’t with what he said or even the quote the problem is with people who are so stupid and sensitive after all this time that they can’t even cope with the guy giving a team he used to play for a bit of deserved praise and stating the obvious – that all players want to play for that kind of team. C’mon I used to think this blog was OK but that’s a really stupid post. Too much sun perhaps?
Also on your harsh truth. The harsh truth is Xavi will be 30 in January. The harsh truth is that Fabregas would improve as a player by training week in, week out with the best, and by being rotated as a young player should and playing more and more as Xavi hits 32/33 but Fabregas is loyal to Wenger and to Arsenal you might want to give him some credit for that instead of presuming he is only influenced by whether he would take over from Xavi immediately. You know as a guy who turned 22 less than 4 weeks ago and who has the most unrealistic expectations on him, you presume to much to assume there is nothing about the Barcelona set up that would work for Fabregas… just like Arsenal they get injuries too and Fabregas would see far more football than Hleb – Helb is the understudy’s understudy. Cesc would not be.
Cesc isn’t going to leave but your post shows a real lack of understanding of what he said and also of his situation.
chelsea is selling kalou and malouda , are they any good here ?
Mike,
I think you’ve got the wrong end of the stick mate, I’ve taken the pure quotes off Sky Sports and linked The Sun article because of exactly what you’re saying mate – he never said he was leaving, it was The Sun’s predictable twist.
And as for the ages, yeah that’s true but I was thinking of the current side. But yeah Fabregas could be seen as the Xavi or whoever else replacement in a few years.
lasagnechef,
don’t wanna give you a hard time cos I feel really sorry about your highbury grass, that has to be a bummer but – I have no problem with the quotes and where they came from. I just don’t get why you mention The Sun angle and then comment “I hope he is not thinking of leaving” because there 100% was nothing like that in the quotes you posted and as an English speaker I would have thought you could understand and respond to a compliment by Fabregas towards his former club, in a more intelligent way than the usual, over-sensitive, response of saying you hope hes not thinking of leaving. I mean c’mon it’s less than a couple of weeks since he pledged point blank – no interpretations or hints but said verbatim – that he would be here next season.
I mean how many times and in braille does the guy have to say the same thing?
