Wenger’s been looking at strikers 3 July, 2009

arsene wenger pat riceIn an interview with the French media Arsene Wenger has revealed the names of two attacking players he’s had an eye on this summer. They are Bordeaux’s Marouane Chamakh and (soon to be) Real Madrid’s Karim Benzema. We’ve mostly been linked with defensive midfielder’s recently but this news suggests that Wenger will ignore that vacency again. He says we’ll only bring a striker in if we lost one and Arsene has said that Adebayor’s future is down to him:

“If he does not want to stay, he will leave but I think that he will be still at Arsenal this season.”

He’s not being shoved out the door, if he wants to leave then we’re not bothered. Strong contrast to last year though when we were saying he is 100% not for sale and we will do everything we can to keep him. Arsene says he thinks he will stay but he could just be saying that; Milan want an attacking player, Ade wants to go to Milan, we’re quite happy to let him go – all the elements are there so I reckon he’ll sign for Milan. If he does go then we’ll have a bit of money to get a replacement and when asked whether he was interested in Chamakh, Wenger said:

“Yes, but only in the event of a departure.”

So if Ade leaves get ready for a heap of Chamakh stories. Wenger was also asked about any other possible French signings:

“There is one who interested me but he (Karim Benzema) left for Madrid. I did not make of approach because I would never have thought that Lyon would sell this year.”

Even if we did know that Benzema could be persuaded to leave Lyon this summer we would’ve never been able to compete with Real Madrid or Man United’s terms. He was a player United identified as a possible Ronaldo replacement but Real were quick in there with a tasty bid and it was too good to turn down. Now the Premier League champions have strengthened added to their attack by signing Michael Owen.

It’s a bizarre transfer, one day you’re organising meetings with Stoke and Hull, the next day you’re signing for Man United. He has not impressed since returning to the Premiership with Newcastle and as a result has not been considered to play for England for a long time. Of course the service at United will be better than at Newcastle so he might get a few more goals that way but I just generally don’t think he’s that good a player any more, he’s past it. Well the experiment of Henrik Larsson worked for them before so this might too. No doubt he’ll score against us this season.

We’ve also secured a signing today – Kieran Gibbs on a long term contract. It’s yet another new deal for one of our young stars. Making sure our promising talents stay at the club is just as important as making new signings and I’m glad we’ve got another player signed up. What excites me is four out of the five young players we’ve re-signed this summer are British – Gibbs, Walcott, Ramsey and Wilshere. Having all the foreign players that we do doesn’t bother me but I look forward to us hopefully having a few more local players in the future. By the way, the other player that signed a new deal was Fabianski.

All this news of new contracts has reminded me about van Persie. He still hasn’t agreed a new contract. There were some positive quotes recently about him getting it sorted but there’s still no news. Hopefully it can get sorted before we start pre-season, otherwise Wenger really is going to have to look at some attacking players to bring in.

Thanks for reading.

Fuck Chamakh i want Marcus Berg top class goal scorer.

oliver - 3 July, 2009

chamakh is class he better buy him

3. Tittle Tattle - 3 July, 2009

“We’ve mostly been linked with defensive midfielder’s recently but this news suggests that Wenger will ignore that vacency again”

Is it really a “vacency” in all realisy? I thought Deni was great last season, and I was a massive doubter before the season started.

And Chamakh seems like a good player, that French dude on Talk Sport raves about him.

4. Roscoe - 3 July, 2009

AW would have been following both players for years!! Its just coincidence!! Milan aint stupid, they’ve bid for a far better striker in Fabiano!! Ade will be an Arsenal player next season much to my disappiontment!!!

oliver - 3 July, 2009

where did madrid get all there money from

Roscoe - 3 July, 2009

Perez has been dealing with the banks!! He’s submitted business models with merchandising income out weighting the financial expense of the transfer fees!!

He would have briefed this to AW, and has an economist he’d have seen the massive risk involved!! Plus AW loves the Gooners and would have told him to do one!!!

5. Arsenal1Again - 3 July, 2009

Walcott, Vela, Bendtner, Arshavin, Van Persie, Eduardo … We don’t need to replace Adebayor with another striker if he decides to leave …. we could use the money on a DM instead. Loan out Diaby and Denilsen.

6. Tittle Tattle - 3 July, 2009

Walcott aint doing much, Vela is totally unporven and Eduardo is an unreliable injury situation, so how can you say we are covered in that area? If we sell Ade we need to replace him – whether you rate him or not.

And we truly don’t need a defensive midfielder in any way. I don’t understand how anyone can look at Denilson’s performances and then say that we need a new DM and not another winger/striker.

7. DAF - 3 July, 2009

Probably no vacancy in midfield in the defensive role. Your man is SONG, mark my words. He will be a revelation this coming season.

8. robert - 3 July, 2009

I really hope we don’t sign that Bordeaux guy. I we should sign a striker we need a really good one, I cant think of one right now but I would prefer Bendtner to that rubbish shit Chamakh. If he cant reach 20 goals in France he wont get 20 in England….

The Brain - 3 July, 2009

Try telling that to Adebayor…..

9. tmurrey - 3 July, 2009

buy eden hazard- a ronaldo in the making.
mahamadou diara from madrid 8m should be enough, as he’s no longer wanted, loan out denilson and diaby for 1st half of season, they return and diara and song go for afcon.
senderos, silvestre out- stephen taylor of newcastle, micah richards, matthew upson, mamadou sakho.
kolo to man city for 17m(ey’ll pay) replace with brede hangeland of fulham for 13m + kierann gibbs season long loan.

10. james - 3 July, 2009

LOL i wish silly fans would stop praising Song he is rubbish noway is he Arsenal quality he doesn’t even tackle he fouls.

11. ThE kInG oF tHe WoRlD - 3 July, 2009

soooooooo wenger says he will look to buy 1 or 2 more players and now he says he wont unless he sells some1?? he plays to the media and the fans. he aint bringin any1 else in, and we’ll fail YET AGAIN coz of it. wats most annoyin is that we’re not far off at all from bein a really great team. he’s just too stubborn to add that little bit extra

12. Tittle Tattle - 3 July, 2009

Sojng is decent, but he is totally undefinable – no defensive or attacking role suits him. Denilsonw as great and he will play that position next season.

13. zeda - 3 July, 2009

arsenal need a 2 players to win anything a player like felipe melo or inler to shore up the dm and sign zapata or naldo to partner vermaelon and toure and song and diaby for back up

14. Hugo - 3 July, 2009

I think all the bigger teams have missed a trick with Owen and old red nose has pulled another bargain, a la Larsson. Which striker had the best goals to chance ratio in the league last season? Rooney? Torres? Anelka? It was Owen. He only scored 8 because he was at Newcastle with shit service. With the amount of chances we create and miss, an experienced international striker who specilises in simply finishing chances would have been ideal for us. And people say he’s injury prone, but he’s on pay as you play terms and was a free transfer, so if he’s injured what do you lose? Nothing. If he’s fit what do you get? Goals. I’m not saying he could have been an Ade replacement (if Ade goes), but he would have been a useful addition to the squad.

15. Tittle Tattle - 3 July, 2009

zeda, just name any player we are linked with why don’t you – forget judging the players we have or the rumoured “targets”, just go with speculation…

16. GrizzBoy - 3 July, 2009

I think we need a keeper & Defensive midfielder more then anything. Almunia to inconsistent, and we need strength in the tackle in the middle. Denilson is very good against mediocre teams; against top 4 he goes missing for long periods, definitely better then song tho. I think we should cast an eye to Real madrid abundance of strikers. Offload Ade & Diaby the latter not going to fit in anywhere. Get Higuain or Huntelaar on the cheap, they’ll both want first team football. No way they’ll be playing 2 strikers up front next season. Don’t really think we need a striker as: Van is the man, Eduardo = fox in the box (we need that), Ade + Bendtner offer height and strength & decent finishers when they both can be bothered. Vela i believe is unproven but very good finisher, needs to bulk up tho.

17. gunnergunnergunner - 3 July, 2009

ehh lads m goin 2 the emirates cup ryt…i was wonderin when is the best day 2 go as I want 2 see all the main playas…not the young guns!lol….so tell me plz saturday/sunday

18. Tittle Tattle - 3 July, 2009

Ade will go and if we are keeping track of the news, we know he will sogn Chamakh to replace him (very good shot to goal ratio). Striker sorted.

As for the DM, Denilson was truly fantastic lasts eason, he will not sign another player because he went out of his way to praise him at every oppertunity. He was great in the tackle, intercepted well and was the best sideways passer in the league, unlike Flamini and Gilberto.

Fans need to accept that he will not sign anyone and get into a state of mind of acceptance that Denilson is in many ways a good player.

19. MistaKen - 3 July, 2009

Huntelaar to replace Ade. Will get more goals and assists because he plays the Arsenal way. Also, sign Mahamadou Diarra and we are sorted

20. http://soccerfanbase.com - 4 July, 2009

I am happy Wenger said he was interested in Benzema, it all means he has the money to spend and can afford to compete with the big spenders.

I am not sure about Chamak but I am very sure I want Adebayor out of Arsenal. I supported him 2 seasons ago but the just ended season just proved what may gunners have always known and it is time for him to go.

21. socialmuppetry - 4 July, 2009

Hmm a little leftfield but lets swap Senderos for Reo Coker. Chamack or the Hunter looks promising up front although Ade gets a bad press, was he not joint top scorer last season, or pretty much so despite being injured? Dudu, Bendtner,RVP, Walcott and Andrey will do the business next season. I’d prefer AW to pick up Inler, he looks class.

22. GrizzBoy - 4 July, 2009

Tittle Tattle I agree with Denilson being a good player. Infact i said he was very good against teams below the top 4. He can’t be playing anything below 8-9 when playing against european teams and top 4, something he’s not bringing to the table yet or he doesn’t have it in his locker. His job is to stop attacks, so can he stop Gerrard? Lamps? Cahill? Ballack? Ireland? Or Anderson and Scholes……. There’s no doubt in my mind he WILL be a great defensive midfielder, I doubt it will start next season. Although i’d loved to be proved wrong.
As for Chamakh he looks as good as Ade. Which is pretty good, a straight swap in terms of level of ability (7-8/10). Chamakh seems to have more potential to me tho. Ade lazy attitude lets him down.

23. rajagopal - 4 July, 2009

hei you got it wrong author.. ramsey’s from WALES.
walawei…

24. Goonerforever - 4 July, 2009

What about Lorik Cana? Sign him on the cheap. Ade must be out and we need a striker who’ll head the ball.

25. Goonerforever - 4 July, 2009

Any bid 4 Diaby should be accepted.

26. abhishek - 4 July, 2009

get in cana and naldo. sell silvestre, adebayor

27. Gooner - 4 July, 2009

Chamkh is average.

13 goals in 34 games for a Ligue 1 winning side is not a great record. He is also 25 so how much is he realistically going to improve.

I personally think Song is a CB – his performances against Stoke and Man U showed this. Denilson is a fantastic DM and in 2 to 3 years will rival Anderson as the best DM in the world. I don’t think we need another DM.

In terms of strikers, someone young would be fine if Ade left. RvP, Eduardo, Arshavin, Nik, Vela and Walcott is still ample quality upfront although I would prefer Ade to stay,

28. kristopher73 - 4 July, 2009

fuck them all ,arsenal must have huntelaar to attack with r.van persie or pogrebyak to attack with arshavin.

29. kristopher73 - 4 July, 2009

so my dream teamvision for arsenal, is almunia out .joe hart in or smeichel ,sagna is good ,naldo ,vermaelen,clichy/gibbs
walcott is good, fab is good ,denilson on the bench veloso / derossi on nasri is good
huntelaar with pvp/pogrebyak with arshavin.
comment on me please!

30. the mole - 4 July, 2009

The reality check is we’re gonna do the same as every year, win fuck all and all this talk of rebuilding is as boring as it was last year and the year before. Take your blinkers off!
Until we have a clear out from top to bottom we will just keep ambling into mediocrity and falling further behind the top 3 and city.
People on here rattling on about Benzema earlier this week…..wake up idiots !!!

31. GASHAW from ETHIOPIA - 4 July, 2009

Personaly I don’t want to undermine ADE .He is one of the best strikers in the premier League.don’t forget that he was the contenders for top scorers last year and before. He didn’t perform well this because the Team it self lacked some thing .Therefore ,letting Adebayor and other players leave from the squad is not the solution .Rather signing extra players like L.FABIANO ,F.MELO,(INLER),NALDO,OR HUNTLAAR,OR M.RICHARDS.is going to be the best alternative to energise the club and I hope Wenger will do more on this occassion.GLORY FOR GUNNERS!!

32. Dan - 4 July, 2009

unreal! i wonder how many other clubs’ fans rubbish their chances before pre-season has even started? are we gonna win everything next year? probably not! but we will have a good run at it, as we did last season! and the season before! in fact as we have always done since Wenger joined our club! there are only so many cups up for grabs and there is a lot of great sides out there gunning for them! I want one! and hope that we can do it this year, and i’ll support my club during the season, not by moaning about who we don’t have or by having the audacity to think that i could tell wenger who to buy or how to do his job! and certainly not by rubbisihing our own players (is it a wonder certain players don’t want to come?).
It’s time to stop all this!!!!!!!!!!!!! Let’s get supporting! I love arsenal!!

33. arsenalfan - 4 July, 2009

34. George - 4 July, 2009

Love the way AW has said he was interested in Benzema but didn’t think Lyon would sell this year!! Another way of saying to us “I considered signing so & so but…”.
Just goes to show money talks and BS walks. Take note Mr Wenger
WE NEED ANOTHER CB, DCM & A STRIKER (PREFERABLY CHAMAKH- THIS BOY IS CLASS WITHOUT A DOUBT AND UNLIKE ADEBAYOR & BENT FOOT BENDTNER HAS A GREAT FIRST TOUCH, IS A NATURAL FINISHER & IS JUST AS GOOD IF NOT BETTER THAN BOTH OF THEM 2 IN THE AIR).
FFS WENGER YOU NEED TO ACT NOW & STOP BS US AS YOU HAVE BEEN THE LAST 3-4 YRS

35. GrizzBoy - 4 July, 2009

So people where we getting all this money to buy these players u guys are listing in ur arsenal squads for next season? De Rossi comes in the £25mill+ bracket, why sign Naldo when we have Toure, Gallas Djourou Vermealen & song. Lets get realistic, this isn’t championship manager. i’ve come to the realization Wenger will keep faith in Tittle Tattle favorite player Denilson. Who had a great season in that position but is only average in the eyes of the world best DM. I agree Adebayor needs to be kept he’s a great attacking outlet when he can be bothered, but i feel we need players that are aren’t scared to put in a shift, like Teves.

36. simon - 4 July, 2009

We dont have transfer money – we can only buy a maximum of 3 players each with an average price of 8million (that is maximum 24 million). If other clusbs are having that 24 million as a minimum (MAN U, City, Chelsea or L-pool) then you know that we are in ****. We need to spend – it is becomming ridiculously foolish NOT to invest. Wenger came out during the season that we were the favourites to sign Ronaldo until MAN U doubled our efforts. Look at how Ronaldo transformed MAN U ‘s attacking Process. We have to work up guys. Arsenal cant hope that players wont be expensive- that is rdiculous. Before AW came to the club the share price was GBP400 and now its GBP10000. The club is profitable but is it willing to Invest in players- NO. Why would players like Arshavin and CESC be linked to the spanish giants of Barca and Real? we got to wake up .

Areas needed in 1st team:

Defender – CB partner for T.V. (let go of Kolo-he is an Arsenal Loyal but let’s face it he no longer is the KOLO we once knew) back up Djoru and Gallas(if he stays), sell Silvestre back to France, Senderos (Italy)

Midfiekders-DM we need a DM -Denilson is good but I think we over used him last season. Get Melo since Fiorentiona wants Ebue

Strikers- Am not sure we have enough firing or should I say Msifiring power up front. We just need consistent and an X-factor player to bring in that extra magic. Ade wants to go but AC Milan who were very keen on him last season are NOT now-probaly want a reduced fee on Ade since he was not that good last season. But if he goes we need some one with the work rate that Ade had in 07-08 season. RVP is the best creative stiker we ve got. But look at his injury records. Since he came from Feyenood this was his best injury free season. Dependable -NO. Walcot has his moments but if he performs like against Chealsea at Emirates then he cant be the one we are looking for. Vela and Nik are OK but Not mature. So if we sell Ade we need a similar repalcement.
