Fiorentina confirm Arsenal offer for Melo & they want Eboue to go the other way 4 July, 2009

Felipe Melo only signed a contract extension at Fiorentina a few days ago but that has brought no halt to the transfer speculation. When he re-signed on the 30th June I ruled us out of a move for him but it looks like I could be wrong. His agent says they are not in talks with any club yet but names Juventus as a club Melo would like to play for. It seems his recent contract extension was meant for one purpose only – the buy-out clause. By creating this they have made it impossible for clubs to bargain with the price, so if they want him they have to pay for him. The price tag on Melo is £21.4m but we rarely spend over £15m for a player – only on special occasions do we splash the cash. I think Wenger has seen the price tag and done his best to get around it by offering a player + money deal – Fiorentina have confirmed we have a made an offer for the player which was not up to the valuation but they would consider a price reduction if the deal included Emmanuel Eboue going the other way:

“Fiorentina sporting director Pantaleo Corvino, in denying the transfer rumours of the past few hours, which sees Felipe Melo definitely at other clubs and reporting potential meetings to finalise the transfer of the player, underlines the following:

“In case the footballer has already reached an agreement with any club, the release clause fixed with the player himself is €25million. We would not contemplate any exchange, unless it is to the liking of Fiorentina.

“Arsenal is the only club to have come close to the sum established by the release clause.

“Fiorentina in turn proposed to the aforementioned club a reduction in the amount set by the release clause by including right-back (Emmanuel) Eboue in the deal.”

I think many, many Gooners will be delighted at this news. A lot of people want Eboue out of the door at any cost, I am not like that but I will admit that I wouldn’t be too upset if he left! He has changed for the better recently but that doesn’t make him my favorite player. If we can sort something out with Fiorentina then I would be very happy.

I don’t really seeing us paying the £21.4m so by sending Eboue the other way (a surplus player anyway) we can bring the price down to our level. The sooner we enter negotiations the better because now they have announced they will sell Melo for that set price there are bound to be a few clubs interested. Juve might be Melo’s personal choice so if they make a bid we could lose out on him.

This is quite big news, for a club to come out so clearly talking about their transfer business isn’t common. We know Wenger is very against it so hopefully this announcement won’t put him off. More news on this as it comes, it seems the Melo story isn’t over yet.

The Independent are reporting that Robin van Persie has signed a contract extension until 2014. It hasn’t yet been announced on Arsenal.com so I’m not taking this as set in stone just yet. Yesterday I spoke briefly about how I was concerned by him not signing on yet but it looks like it will be wrapped up shortly. Hopefully The Independent do know something and it will be officially announced soon.

I also spoke yesterday about Marouane Chamakh and Wenger’s possible interest in him. Well the Bordeaux coach has said any deal must the be sorted out quickly so he can plan ahead of the new season. We are tied down until Adebayor’s future is sorted so we can’t offer anything yet. On the subject, Arseblog has a leak of a Michael Owen-style brochure for Ade which is worth checking out.

Right I better be off, I have my second work shift of the day in an hour and I need food. See ya.

If melo signs, that’s the end for one of song, denilson or diaby. Arsene is bound to go for the ‘develop-one-the-young-players-into-the-DF-role’ approach rather than spend big. with rosicky, cesc, nasri, arshavin, RVP and theo all fit, we’ll be in with a real shout for the premiership

bobby d - 4 July, 2009

I truly wish that was true. i know there young but they should be really showing signs of things to come. but sadly there not. if we are going to do anything next year mr wenger needs to remember the key word for playing in the english premiership STRENGH. if we can get a strong spine running threw are team then we CAN start winning things. we have picked up a much needed centre back now. all we need is battleing midfielder.

2. andy - 4 July, 2009

thats why they got him to sign an extension.extra money but it will still be a great signing i do agree with perry about the song, diaby and denilson saga but getting melo will create competition which is something our team need to play better

3. Reece - 4 July, 2009

i don’t want eboue to go. he and arshavin are our only constantly fit direct players. walcott is good but he still has alot to learn. Nasri will always turn inside, never cross the ball, never run forward. No penetrative passes.

4. dj - 4 July, 2009

YES it might be back on, I really really really want us to sign Melo.

WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

I think this may be a good bit of businss for the Arsenal. Melo may be able to create the solidity we need at the base of our midfield but I’ve only a few highlights to base an opinion on. Looking solely at highlights I think that Inler looks the most impressive of the guys that have been linked with us but I can’t make a valid judgement. If Eboue wants out then fine lets go for it. I think it will be good for Song to have a strong role model to help develop him and release the other guys to play more to their strengths.
I have a feeling this will be a good year for us whatever happens with Melo.

The bid is £13.2m plus Manu Eboue. This is sufficient for the selling club, there are reports of Fiorentina wanting Senderos for free also.

wenger please please please sign melo. stop acting like george graham and being so narrow minded. your not scottish. we should give senderos to them for free. hes like a bad smell that wont go away. i truly never want here that mans name again.

10. Gooner - 4 July, 2009

If we get sign Melo, Naldo and Chamakh and use Eboue in the swap and sell Senderos, Silvestre and Adebayor we’d be sorted! Naldo is quality and if we have him, Gallas, Toure, Vermaelen and Djourou then thats plenty and Toure could be used as back up to Sagna!

Personally I’d prefer Cana to Melo but we need someone big in there and Melo fits the bill nicely. That c*** Adebayor has to go!

11. Gabes - 4 July, 2009

No, I don’t want Eboue to go, he has a lot of raw power and aggression, something that we lack.

Although, Melo would be a very good signing, besides, we need somebody like him.
But I think he should offer somebody else, not Eboue.

13. Joe - 4 July, 2009

I don’t know if i am being overly pessimistic but from what has been written it sounds like Juventus are trying to buy this guy, Fiorentina are scared about not getting a decent amount of cash for him and they have used our rumoured interest to force Melo’s price up? Does anyone know if it actually did come from their official website or just one like this?

14. SimonSays - 4 July, 2009

Post 12 – come back when you can spell players names! your team looks awful, 2 new centre backs who you have never seen play (bar youtube clips the founting of all internet fans knowledge) both starting?

Plus you have Chamakh up front, that guy is another unproven player.

post 13 – It was on Fiorentinas website today, but like you I feel this is just a price pushing stunt to force Juve’s hand!

15. Mike - 4 July, 2009

Hands up it was doing a little bit of hacking!! you got me!

16. ganesh - 5 July, 2009

Ya Melo is too costly for Arsenal .. I suggest they buy Cana or Mataudi for around 10 to 15 million .. Also Song can be back up DM .. And also keep Eboue cos he’s the nly back up RB we have .. Also Fiorentia have been wicked to make Melo sign a contract extension wit a high buy out clause knowing he’s badly needed by Arsenal .. Arsenal shud hit back by ignoring Melo completely!!!!

bobby d - 5 July, 2009

we need big names and tropies now. no more talking about seasons to come. whatever deals wenger has to do just make it happen. he has to be more ruthless now to get what he wants. mr ferguson takes no prisoners does he.

17. GunnerPete - 5 July, 2009

typical Italian con trick….’we will let you go but you have to sign a new contract first to up your fee from 10 mill Euros to £21 miil.

Im sure Ivan will sort them out and off load big Phil and Eboue ( although I would like to keep Eboue). Big Phil should be valued at £7 mill anyway. Eboue is worth more up to £10, because despite his stupid antics, he is a class player. So if Fiorentina want them both, it should be a straight swap or we give them both and they pay us a small fee.

Mind you I would still like to see Eboue in the DM role.

I just hope we are offering Gallas/Big Phil/ and Kolo to clear the way for another big defender like Naldo…..he can actually out jump Drogba.

18. Manofarsenal - 5 July, 2009

You guys are saying Eboue should go, let me tell you, eboue is a better player compare to Denilson or Diaby, He is good in the midfield, he can hold ball, he can overlaps, he can dribble as well.

To me, i would not let him go. Also, Wenger should buy Naldo, this guy is too good, we don’t have to waste time, because we don’t have good deffenders, buy Naldo now before is too late Wenger, because i don’t know what you are waiting for, today is 4th of july.

19. Gonner69 - 5 July, 2009

I like this scenario. Sell Couldnthitabarndoor to AC for £20m + Flamini and use the money to buy Melo and goodbye Eboue.
Goodbye also to Denilson and Diaby, neither are good enough. Keep Song for another sason to see if he can improve on last seasons better performances. Goodbye also to Sylvestre ans possibly Toure. AW should never have signed MS when he let PS go to Milan. Plain bloody stupid!
And that brings us nicel to PS. Its another problem Wenger has, but not through my eyes,( because I think hes big, strong and brave ) is Senderos. What is he going to do with him?
Sell him? Who to? or is he going to realise that he is going to release a good centre back.
And for all you out there who say hes unreliable, how many defensive mistakes did Toure, Gallas and Sylvestre make last season?
If we can hold on to Gallas,Senderos & Djourou, along with the signing of vermaellan, we should be well covered in defence.
