News round-up on a quiet Sunday – David Bentley gets punched 12 July, 2009

It really is quiet today. It’s been a long, long summer but we are so nearly there. It’s just six days until our first pre-season friendly against Barnet and five weeks until the Premier League starts up again. Five weeks sounds a bit long but at least we’ll have a load of friendlies to keep us occupied plus we should have some Champions League qualifiers somewhere, I’m not sure when.

I guess the story which caught my attention most today involves David Bentley. It seems someone has done what we have all dreamed of and punched the little prick right between the eyes. He was having dinner with his misses when someone came up to him out of the blue and planted one on him! Alright, he was with his 7-month pregnant fiancée which is a bit harsh but this is David Bentley for fucks sake, the attacker saw an opportunity and took it.

Apparently it was a smash and grab type thing and they had taxis waiting outside. Bentley’s mate tried to chase the guy but ended up worse off that him! I’m in no way condoning violence like this but I will admit I did laugh.

He has to be one of the most loathed players for Arsenal fans. If it’s not his face, it’s his attitude, his hair, his voice, cockiness or that fact he’s really nowhere near as good as he makes himself out to be. The whole ‘next David Beckham’ thing was hilarious because it obviously went straight to his head. Spurs, being the kind of club they are jumped straight on the bandwagon wasting a whopping £17m on him. They’re now looking to offload the flop after just a year at the club Bentley insisted he had supported since a boy and had a massive place in his heart for. Awwww. Even Harry ‘He’s got a twitch’ Redknapp hates him! Who would take him? Who cares?

In news more related to home, Sunderland are favourites to sign Philippe Senderos according to the Sunday Express. I’ve said before that I’m kind of hoping we keep Phil. I don’t think we will but I’ve developed a bit of a soft spot for him, I dunno why I think I just feel sorry for him. I think he’ll be off somewhere this summer though and if Sunderland want him he could end up there. If I had a choice of losing one of Toure, Gallas or Senderos then I’m afraid it’d be the Swiss. I hope everything works out alright for him whatever happens, one of the genuinely nice blokes in football.

There’s a rumour in The Daily Star saying Tony Adams is in the running for the Southampton job. I’m quite confident when I say this story is completely made up, however it could happen you never know. If any truth does come up about Tony’s next job I’ll fill you in, I think we’re all interested in his future.

Yesterday I posted a poll asking if you would sell Alex Song. 70% of you agreed with me saying we should keep him, 20% said take the money and run and the other 10% wasn’t really bothered. It’s not like we’re in a situation where we need to sell so I think he’s definitely worth keeping while he’s still developing. He’s come a long way in the last couple of seasons and there’s no sign of him stopping yet. You never know, in a few years time it could be Alexandre Song who is constantly assuring the fans he’s staying at Arsenal as Barcelona tap him up left, right and centre.

Well that’s it for today. I’ll try writing something tomorrow, hopefully there’ll be a bit of news to talk about. See ya.

5. aaa bbb - 12 July, 2009

Moronic attitude to thuggish, loutish behaviour. Is this what they call ‘The English disease’ ?

6. jakartajive - 12 July, 2009

Bentley was moved on because he wasn’t up to scratch. We got paid well for him. He’s under-acheived for the Spuds. Get over it.

To suggest punching people you dn’t personally know – in public – in front a pregnant partner is in any way praiseworthy of funny is sad and pathetic and just encourages the worst type of hatred in football fans.

It embarrasses me to see people who call themselves Gooners revelling in this kind of playing-at-being-hard-men-from-behind-the-safety-and-anonymity-of-the-web bull.

Grow up and have at least a tiny degree of respect for a man’s wife and unborn kid, whatever you think him.

7. Danish Gooner - 12 July, 2009

He is a stupid Flash boy with a larger tahn life attitude but to punch the fucker is just taking it a bit to far,in no way will i condone such a stupid act, granted he is one metro sexual cunt to many.

8. lasagnechef - 12 July, 2009

Mate, I’m not saying it was the right thing to do or that I would do it myself if I saw him. I did say that it was harsh seeing as he was with his pregnant fiancee but I didn’t do it so don’t blame me.

I’m saying that I do truly hate David Bentley, he’s twat and yeah I did laugh. No one died, no one was seriously hurt.

And I don’t think any of that ‘people who call themselves Gooners being hard men behind the safety of the internet’ is relevant. Not really anything to do with what I said. I’m not pretending to be anything I’m not, I’m just commenting on a news story.

9. EasterEEL - 12 July, 2009

Your comments are totally out or order. Poor guy can’t even go out for a meal with his wife in peace.

He was a footballer who didn’t quite make it at Arsenal and Wenger sold him on, how can you hate him and call him a twat. Shame on you.

10. Gooner Grantski - 12 July, 2009

Shut up you fools, if anyone deserves a punch in the face it’s Bentley, wish someone would do that to Ronaldo it may take the prick down a peg or two!

To the man who did it… Sir you are a legend!

11. Gooner Grantski - 12 July, 2009

oh and to Johnny just visit.. http://www.arsenal.com/fixtures/fixtures-reports for all the fixtures

12. simms21 - 12 July, 2009

At least the guy waited for his wife to go to Bathroom before he did it… She only caught then ending when she was just getting out… If you don’t call that courtesy than I don’t know what is LOL

13. don jazzy - 12 July, 2009

whoever wrote this article is a big fat fag he didn’t make it to arsenal so ………. does that mean you should laugh at a man being punched in the face in front of his p regant wife?
growup plz and stop being a n idiot not everybody in the wold muts for arsenal or not evrybody in the world must like arsenal wtf

14. Tombo - 12 July, 2009

Easter

Maybe because he’s a twat that has slagged off The Arsenal every chance he gets, bitching about how he was treated, how English players don’t get oppertunities at The Arsenal.

If you really need an answer to that then you’re lilly white scum just like him!

I love Big Phil!

Also Jonny, you want arsenal tv online or a decent stream.

Up the Arse!

15. dj - 12 July, 2009

I don’t care what anybody say Bentley getting punched was funny and I love it. I don’t care who he was with, if you talk the talk you better be ready to back it up. Punched in the eye while eatting a meal LOL wow I want to kiss the dude that did it LOL

16. goonerman - 13 July, 2009

I laughed

17. goonerman - 13 July, 2009

Want to know why I laughed? Because it’s fucking hilarious

18. goonerman - 13 July, 2009

By the way, we won’t play a Champions League qualifier until Aug 18th or 19th. So Everton away on the 15th will still be our first competitive game.

19. Quarter McTino - 13 July, 2009

“It seems someone has done what we have all dreamed of and punched the little prick right between the eyes.” – that this seems to be shared by half the contributers is a bit depressing. Maybe it’d be even funnier if he had a kid old enough to witness it too. Bently may be a ponce, but once, when he was a younger even flasher, badly coiffed git, he was going to be the new DB10 and for a short while he looked like it. He wasn’t good enough full stop – not his fault. So, he sounded bitter once or twice since he was moved on? So what. I loved these players when they’re gunners: Frank Stapleton, Cashley, super Nic, Freddie (“The only reason I signed for West Ham was the prospect of beating Arsenal”). How this turns to bitter hatred I don’t understand

20. arsenal till l die - 13 July, 2009

when we drew with spurs 4-4, l was gutted. Then to make things worst he started to get flash about it , with a big smile on his face. Was not forgotten to all gooners fans .you deserve that you shit fuck!!!

21. KarlAFC - 13 July, 2009

Look at you lot getting all lemon behind the keyboard. Pathetic.

22. Robby - 13 July, 2009

C’MON B NICE TO EVERYBODY, JESUS SAID LOVE YOUR ENEMY..IS IT NICE IF YOUR FACE GOT PUNCHED TOO?? PLEASE SHOW THAT WE ARE ARSENAL FAN N CIVILIZED NOT HOOLIGAN.

23. drew10 - 13 July, 2009

Bentley is not just an Arsenal player who didn’t make it. He is a jumped up wide-boy who thinks he is twice the player he actually is.

He has spent the last 6 years deliberately slagging off Arsenal to raise his own profile and very inflate his own self worth.

I remember when he scored that goal for us as a youngster and we all sang his name to the DB10 song, he said that was the best day of his life. Two weeks later he said he couldn’t wait to play in our first team and requested to leave.

Then he goes to Spuds and we hear “I was always a Spuds fan and I hate Arsenal.” WTF??

He got punched… Not a great thing to happen but seriously would someone punch Flamini? Henry? Edu? Even Aliadiere? No because none of these guys shouted their mouths off about the Gunners etc..

I don’t agree with hitting anyone but we all know there are these kind of people out there my advice would be if you don’t want to get slapped keep your gob shut, simples!

24. steve - 13 July, 2009

i don’t condone punching the rat, if he would have stayed he might of made something of himself but because of his atitude bertie big bollocks he puts himself in areas where he will get a dig or two in his life ( no brains bentley) this is a problem with a lot of english young players.

25. chris - 13 July, 2009

Could not agree more -

For a site i like when it’s talking about football this is an absolute tosser’s article.

Pleeeease do not start bysaying we’d all like to punch David entley and then hide behind saying but I said I don’t condone violence -

You are being just like someone who would set a taxi up punch someone famous in the face and run aay with some mates available to beat up anyone who chased after you -

What about his mate?

Is he a tosser who deserves a kicking too because he’s his mate?
if his girlfriend had gone after them would she have deserved what she got, whatever she got?

I don’t care how quiet it is or how many Arsenal fans or midless thugs or Internet wannabe mindless thugs agree with you you need to not say stuff like this and you need to write a headeline piece that says:

I am not a tosser David Bentley attack is not a joke
i am sorry I wrote an article yesterday that made it look like I was a tosser who thinks attcaking people in public is funny. I am not a tosser and do not think this is true at all. I was jst suffering from lack of proper things to say and succumbed to the latent tosser in all of us -
or whatever the real reason is I am only guessing
(Even if you are a tosser you should still do this nd just try to keep the latent tosser in you under more control as well as you can)

26. Dan - 13 July, 2009

Jesus, talk about overreaction…
He’s a flash little fuck, who had it comin. If it’d been any normal bloke no one would have batted an eye lid.
If he was a real geezer like he portrays, he’d never go to old bill.
Two bob spurs mug

Up the arsenal

27. chris - 13 July, 2009

If he was a real geezer…

Like you Dan?

Yeah, right mate.

Up the arsenal

28. wengerball - 13 July, 2009

come on, who hasn’t thought of punching that twat?

I don’t think anyone of us would actually do it or even condone it, but we’ve surely thought it.
