Standard Liege Preview: 2nd string side need to do the business 16 September, 2009

It’s the first game of the group stages tonight and it’s always important to get off to a good start. Well as I’m sure you are aware we are resting quite a few names for all different reasons. Walcott, van Persie, Denilson, Nasri, Arshavin, Djourou and Vela are all out, which is bad. However neither Fabianski or Almunia can make the trip leaving us very inexperienced between the posts. It means either Mannone or Szczesny will make their Champions League debut tonight, most likely to be the former.

Almunia is ‘sick’ according to Arsene Wenger but when you have you’re second choice ‘keeper out you still play you’re no.1 even if he has the flu or whatever. There’s a good chance he was dropped but you just wouldn’t do it when you know the next in line is either Mannone or Szczesny.

It’s quite scary but whoever starts in goal tonight is going to have to put in a great performance. We’ll have a first choice back four in front of them so they will have to do their best to try make it a quiet night for the ‘keeper.

So with all those names out, here’s how I think we could line up:

Mannone
Sagna – Gallas – Vermaelen – Clichy
Song
Fabregas (c) – Diaby
Eboue – Bendtner – Eduardo

Rosicky is in the squad but I don’t see Arsene Wenger picking him to start, as much as I would like to see that. Another option could be Jack Wilshere in that attacking role but it would be bringing even more inexperience to the side.

I don’t think that all these players missing the trip is because they are all injured. Wenger must feel that we can go to Liege and win with this squad. It’s fair to say they’re not the greatest opponents we’ve come up against in this competition and maybe Wenger sees this as a good opportunity to give players a rest before we try get back on track in the league this weekend.

If it goes wrong Wenger has it in for him but he’ll take it. We should do it but you never know when we’ve got a ‘keeper that’s never played at this level before.

We should be winning, with any side. I don’t want to be disrespectful or over confident but we’re a class above Standard Liege and anything less that three points is a bad return.

Enjoy the game and thanks for reading.

Continue your negatives as usual
When are you going to realized that fans should be behind their team in such circumstances?
Idiots

6. Descartes - 16 September, 2009

He’s the best player in The Premiership who’s first name is Emmanuel!

7. Bigsix - 16 September, 2009

Trusting AW makes me believe that each player he fields, is good. So as the rest of our squad. I dont see a second or third string in them but quality players with creative minds

arsenalkuratu - 16 September, 2009

Same here

Why not rest Cesc? We are very beat up already, and whatever happens in this opening match of the group stages, I’m sure we can make it up. I think we can compete without Cesc or Rosicky, and another injury to a key starter could put us in a hole real fast. Of course this wouldn’t be an issue if the people in charge were the type who learned from past mistakes. How long will it take to realize that a team like Arsenal that competes in the EPL, CL, FA, and Carling needs Depth and a Top Drawer Keeper to be a contender.

9. Bujay - 16 September, 2009

11. REDSTAR - 16 September, 2009

We are fast becomming a joke, someone has to tell the fans what is going on with regards to cash flow.
Did Wenger have money to spend? or is there no money, is Wenger being stubburn, if so then i think it is high time to re-think the situation, if there is no money then he is doing a great job, and we have to act against the board, either way we have to be informed by someone, why are we being treated this way.
How can we not have one GK that we can be confident with, were Asrenal for fucks sake.

12. ZA goooner - 16 September, 2009

Meh, tonights gonna be tough theyll be well up for it but they dont have 2 of their best players which includes their captain, so COME ON YOU GUNNERS.

13. ZA goooner - 16 September, 2009

14. ken dennis - 16 September, 2009

Don’t blame it on Henry, don’t blame it on clichy, don’t blame it on the referee, blame it on eboue…

15. REDSTAR - 16 September, 2009

Look mate i havent booed any of our players never ever so dont call me a cunt.

16. Charlie, Kenya - 16 September, 2009

I kind of like it when we are meeting a weak team with so many injuries. It is the perfect setting to start the likes of Ramsey, Wilshere and Bendtner in their so called strong positions and see what they can do. Certainly if Bendtner is played as an out and out strike against Liege and he finds it difficult to score, we should consider him surplus.

17. REDSTAR - 16 September, 2009

How confident are you now 2 nil down with 5 gone?

18. REDSTAR - 16 September, 2009
