Robin out until March with torn ligaments 15 November, 2009

I fucking hate International week. You hate international week too and I’m sure you loathe it even more with the news that Robin van Persie has torn ankle ligaments in a friendly vs. Italy which will see him out for about three months.

What a piss take.

“The ankle ligaments are definitely torn. After the match our medical staff did not mention a break in the bone but the doctors will be able to tell us for sure. It does not look too good.”

That’s the word from the Dutch FA regarding our top striker. The challenge (video) happened just 10 minutes into the game and he looked in quite some pain as he was stretchered off.

It’s typical, just as things are looking good for us we’re dealt a big blow. We’ll certainly miss Robin and although we might be told we can expect him back in March, he’ll take time to work his way back in and get fully fit. The next three months are vital to a title race and we’re without our main target man.

It’s time for Eduardo to step up now really. He said the other day he’s hungry for goals so he must deliver. With Bendtner currently injured too I’m expecting Eddy to be named the central figure in that 4-3-3. He’s lost his touch a bit recently but we all know just how clinical this guy is and I have confidence that he’ll show us once again in our time of need.

I found out about RVP’s injury last night just as I was thinking about Chelsea possibly being without Drogba, Lampard, Bosingwa and Cole for their visit in a couple of weeks. They have a few injuries too and you could say they’re in a worse off position than us, but it’ll be a tough one whoever plays and I’m looking forward to it already.

philsenderosIn other news Senderos is thinking of leaving in January as he’s getting no football here. You can’t blame him to be honest. I really thought that he might get another chance this year but clearly he’s not in Wenger’s plans at all and is just here as a back up. To be fair, neither Vermaelen nor Gallas have been injured (praise God/touch wood/crossed fingers/etc) so Big Phil hasn’t had a chance to play yet, if one had picked up something then circumstances might’ve changed but as it stands Senderos isn’t happy at Arsenal.

If/when he does leave we definitely need another defender. At the moment we have Djourou, Silvestre and Senderos as our central defensive back up – but Djourou’s injured, Silvestre is not good enough and Senderos looks to be off. It’s more likely that Wenger will promote a youngster but we’re close to being very thin at the back.

Sorry I haven’t been around much recently, been busy working and there hasn’t really been anything to talk about. Hopefully next time we meet it’s not to discuss more bad news. Until then.

Chamakh looks good 4 arsenal

2. Bob - 15 November, 2009

March is what, 4-5 months from now? It isn’t THAT bad.

3. Murt - 15 November, 2009

We can cope without rvp. Ok der is absolutely no way we can replace rvp directly but as long as nasri rosicky fabregas arshavin and eduardo stay in good nick we’ll get by. I don’t think we can score as much goals as we have been without him but der is still plenty of firepower der to beat most teams. Saying that sunderland away will be alot tougher without him let alone chelsea

4. Louis mritaba - 15 November, 2009

5. gooner sems - 15 November, 2009

6. Tommy - 15 November, 2009

Out until march ?

The results of the scan have not even been reelased, so unless you’re a psychic or a doctor mate then you have no idea what the extent of the damage is.

7. GunnerX - 15 November, 2009

I googled RVP injury (torn ankle ligaments), and the results suggest he could be out for 2—–12 months depending of the serverity of the tear. Lets pray it’s not bad, but I bet he’s back in time for the WC.

We’re definitely going to miss that classy first touch and that sniper-esque goals. The current system we’re playing with is ideal for these situations, the whole team can score! I’ll admit, eduardo looked rusty against spurs, but who wouldnt be after being out for so long and not getting a proper run of games? In the very next game against Wolves he showed how dangerous he can be. It was said that Walcott and denilson would return to training this week too. So i wouldnt be too worried. Go Go Gunners!

9. Bobby Perez - 15 November, 2009

time to give wilshere, merida & vela a runout & see what they can do

10. Old gun - 15 November, 2009

I watched Senderos played at Carlling cup game, he was much slower than before and few times he missed challenge and let Liverpool player got away from him into the 18 yards box.
If he is good, then AC would keep him, but not, I don’t think he even can challenge with other center Ds.

11. zaparodje - 15 November, 2009

Fucking March. Fucking hell that’s a long bloody time to wait. OK The team i would like for s’land: Almunia, Gibbs, Vermaelen, Gallas, Sagna, Fabregas, Song, Nasri, Arshavin, Eduardo, Rosicky

12. Jack Staniforth - 15 November, 2009

I don`t make a habit of using foul language in my comments so I`ll just say I agree with lasagnechef (The Cannon) in his opening gambit about friendly international mataches, there`s too many internationals and not enough focus on the domestic competition, ,the ones who pay their wages. Who picks up the bill for van Persie`s injury?
With so many injuries around the ankles more research is needed into methods of protection.

13. EMEKA - 15 November, 2009

CHIELINNI , ALWAYS VERY CLUMSY, I HOPE WE MEET JUVENTUS IN THE CHAMPIONS LEAGUE AND SLAP THE TASTE OUT OF EM.
OK RVP IS OUT – BIG BLOW..

BUT WHAT DOES THAT MEAN.- YEA U GUESSED RIGHT..THE CROZILLIAN.

A BETTER STRIKER I MUST ADMIT.., SIT DOWN AND ENJOY THE SHOW

THE WORLDS MOST PROLIFIC STRIKER IS ABOUT TO BE UNLEASHED.

14. ZA Gunner - 15 November, 2009

I agree with the earlier comment, there should be some kind of better technology like some kind of ankle pad to protect the player’s ankles

15. zaparodje - 15 November, 2009

this period will be tough:

Sunderland (a)

Chelski (h)

Stoke (h)

Liverpool (a)

Burnley (a)

i think, so this is gonna be real tough
c’mon u gunners

16. jan - 15 November, 2009

I think there is “positive” news coming in. The ankle is not in as bad shape as feared. Its a second grade injury of the ankle. Not a third. He will most certainly not need an operation. So may we get some hope back?

This is the perfect oppotunity to promote Diaby to CF….seriously

18. Jack Staniforth - 16 November, 2009

From all the reports I`ve read since the season began Diaby seems to be the bad guy and doesn`t seem to have many fans. He`s been made to look a bit of a `goose` and taken a lot of flack so maybe you`re right, lets see if he can get the monkey off his back, play him at centre forward with Eduardo and Vela on his flanks, stranger things have happened.

19. 8 inch knob - 16 November, 2009

In truth it was an excellent, inch perfect tackle from Chielini. The tackle itself didn’t do the damage it was the jarring action caused by Robin trying to manoever against the motion of roll after he was tackled.

As upsetting as it is to have a player out for months, I don’t think it should be of too much concern.

The squad and most importantly the system that Wenger is integrating from the root up allows us to sufficiently cover for Robin’s adsence. Indeed, it may even be to our advantage.

Robin is a bit of an enigma. He doesn’t have the speed anymore to ply himself on the wings (even tho he is succesful for the Dutch there) nor does he have the physicality to play as an out and out striker, a killer like Torres and Drogba. If you ask me the perfect position for Robin would be second striker and the best formation to utilize him in this way would be a 4-4-2.

I would say that the best options for centre forward right now are Eduardo, Vela and Diaby.

Last time I ventured to give my opinion of a possible line up I was told I know nothing about the game and that`s possibly right but I must have learned something over my sixty two years as an Arsenal supporter so forgive my naivety and I`m sure to have missed someone. Anyway here goes, it`s only a bit of fun and I`m bored.

Almunia, Gibbs, Vermaelen, Gallas, Eboue, —-Nasri, Diaby, Fabregas, Rosicky,—-

Eduardo, Arshavin. Bench: Clichy, Sagna, Ramsey, Song, Vela, Walcott(if fit) Denilson (if fit)

I`m quite sure Mr. Wenger takes absolutely no notice of mine or any other comments and probably never sees them, and rightly so.

22. Jack Staniforth - 16 November, 2009

Sorry, missed out the goalkeeper (Mannone) and yes it is a 4-4-2 formation although I prefer three up front but he`s crook (Aussie for sick).

23. 8 inch knob - 16 November, 2009

Clichy is injured Jack

24. 8 inch knob - 16 November, 2009

Also only 7 subs allowed

25. 8 inch knob - 16 November, 2009

“Last time I ventured to give my opinion of a possible line up I was told I know nothing about the game”. This is always the issue in the blogosphere (?). There are always people who think they know it all.

Anyhow, what pisses me off the most is the number of people who continually slate Diaby. What is also just as disturbing is the recent quotes by Wenger implying that Diaby’s future is in defensive midfield.

I can’t think of a worse position to play the lad. Although he is a surprisingly good tackler, his positional discipline is very poor. As Wenger himself has said, “Diaby is attracted to the goal like a magnet”. Diaby is a goal scorer, simple as. Other than Arshavin, no other player possesses as good a shot. His dribbling skills and ball control is also the best in our squad. What other player can shake off 2, maybe 3 defenders with ease? In a forward position this is crucial. The ability to take out a defender let alone 2 or 3 may give you a chance to create a shot on goal.

In my humble opinion Diaby has some serious potential but the best of his abilities would be lost in midfield. His mazy runs amount to very little due to the midfield congestion.

26. Gusheshot - 16 November, 2009

Sorry v. Persie, once again he normally get such needless set back when he is at the top of his form. i have counted he is likely to miss more than 15 games excluding FA encounters. Wenger pliz get us a quick replacement if we are to lift any trophy.

27. eleanor - 16 November, 2009

Out until March? You obviously write for the Daily Mail in your spare time.

One. Were we going to get through the rest of the season without more major injuries? No.

Two. Who, right now, would you prefer to be sidelined for perhaps 6 weeks – RVP, Cesc, Song, or Vermaelen? With Arshavin, Vela, Edu, TR7, Theo, and Diaby as options we still have a top three to die for.

Three. Look at our fixture list over the next 6 weeks. Chelsea at home and Liverpool away are the only fixtures of any real note (RVP was never going to play in the Man City Carling gig no matter what.)

Four. Sure. Stuff like injuries are random. RVP getting crocked today has no bearing on what might happen tomorrow. But on a scale of we-can-cope to there-goes-our-season this is more easily managed than say Drogba or Rooney keeling over.

Anyone who thinks we have to go out and get someone else to replace RVP hasn’t a clue vis-a-vis:

(a) The tried and tested media hype and interpretation over the injury. (3 months? Not a chance.)
(b) How AW solves Arsenal’s problems.
(c) How long it would take to acquire/bed-in someone bought in January.
(d) Who we have already … for God’s sake we’ve barely used Vela or Theo this campaign.

And for those who think that the RVP injury has anything to do with RVP’s apparent penchant for getting injured either haven’t seen the VT or aren’t living in the real world. Perhaps both.

So, give it a rest and let’s see what the team is made of this season and let’s hope they’re a bit more rational and optimistic than some of its fans.

28. Kashif - 16 November, 2009

Are Arsenal allowed to seek compensation from the Dutch FA? I hope we can screw something out of those idiots. How many times has Rob been injured playing in one of their shi**y friendlies? Too many!

29. sreekar - 16 November, 2009

arsenal.com says onle 6 weeks , i believe it can be upto 2 months ….. but till march??!
